  • We (just Daniel this time) take a numbers driven approach to determine who the best team in College Football history is. Does 95 Nebraska's unstoppable attacke with Tommie Frazier and Lawrence Phillips take the crown? What about the ultra talented 01 Miami Hurricanes? How does Joe Burrow and the 2019 LSU Tiger team stack up?

The most impressive thing of the 95 Husker was that everyone KNEW they were going to run. A one-dimensional team. Stop the run and you win. Yet Nebraska STILL came to town and jammed it down your throat.
6 games were played without an easy Heisman winner at tailback (Lawrence Phillips) had he not been a thug. His replacement was a true freshman. Those scores would have been even more lopsided had Phillips played (see Florida game).
Nebraska had 0 (ZERO) sacks allowed FOR THE SEASON.

4 - losing coaches (at the school they were currently coaching)
      2 - winning coaches by 7 games (2+5)

So i was at the 1995 Nebraska vs. Florida National Championship game. I know it was a blow out but it was even more of a blow out than the scores showed or what you could see on tv. I have watched it again on CZcams but nothing beats the eye test. I honestly thought Florida was going to win that game going into it but what I saw on the field was insane. It was like Nebraska was a college team and Florida was a high school team. The pure physical nature and size at that time of that 95 team Nebraska team on offense and defense was clearly a factor. Just go look at the size and speed of those Nebraska kids back then. I know college football has changed a ton since then but I can definitely say that 95 team would put a hurt on teams today and I think that is why it is still considered the greatest team by a lot of analyst.

They weren't fancy just physically dominated everyone end of a different Era. Miami had the most talent, like 17 nfl players or something like that. Lsu had two of the best wr currently in the nfl and burrow is already a legend. Funny thing is burrow wanted to play for nebraska his whole childhood, lucky he didn't because he wouldn't be as successful in my opinion. Also that husker team lost 3 games in a 5 year stretch and a lot if people think should have won 4 championships and lost only 2 games if not for poor officiating in 93 but every team has been screwon calls, just sucks when it's in a championship.

Now here are some rather unnoticed statistics, Nebraska had 27 4th down attempts, and 15 were successfully made. 47 whole penalties called against Nebraska, which in this day and age is really good, especially for a running team.
And how many fumbles did Nebraska lose in total?
Nine. Nine whole turnovers from the ground. And to think Nebraska had the best offensive line is an understatement. FOUR of their starters were new.
Fullbacks. Nebraska utilized them so well in their offense, and nowadays you hardly ever see them.
Had Phillip's not get suspended for the majority of the season Nebraska's rushing totals would be a lot higher, and a better chance for a Heisman win for the Cornhuskers.
I'm not sure what LSU can use to compare those statistics with but they must have good statistics somewhere.

      * only 2 SEC teams finished in the top 20. Fewest of the 90s.
1/2 of the Big Easy Conf were 1st yr coaches including Neuheisel. I'm pretty sure the 4 you refer to faced 5, 1st yr coaches when the non conf coaches are included.
Neb beat 1 ranked team that faced a ranked team in their bowl. That was CO and CO played a 1st yr coach in their bowl. LSU 2019 beat 5 ranked teams that played ranked teams in their bowls. Oregon's coached did good for a 1st yr coach, but it had been 7 yrs since he head coached...lol...at Chico State. He did well bec like Neb, CO, KSU, KS, OR had a poor sch (#43).
Speaking of strength of schedules, Neb 95 had the 5th strongest schedule of all the NC teams of the 90s. And Neb's NCs in the 90s came against their 1st, 2nd and 4th weakest schedules.
in 25 yrs of bowls, Osborne only beat 2 coaches that had a winning bowl record when he played them. 95 WAS NOT one of them. Spurrier had a losing bowl record thru 94. Fulmer was the only coach during the RUN, I mean SKIP ALONG that had a winning bowl record when Osborne played them.

That Nebraska team had 18 different ball carriers that year and 9 dudes with at least 185 yards rushing. To put things into perspective, Ahman Green ran for 1086 yards that year in just 12 games and only had 22.4% of the teams carries! 627 total rushes for 4,398 yards equaled a whopping 399.8 yards rushing per game. 51 total rushing TD's combined by 10 different revolving-door RB's. Nebraska's run defense was astounding also (341 attempts for 862 yards allowed, just 2.5 yds/rush) during the 95' season. For a team that made other teams throw the ball early and often, they still only allowed just under 50% completion-% and an allowed 103.00 QB rating (college rating). Ridiculous numbers won't happen again, even in college football. To top that all off, Nebraska special teams kickoff team allowed just 16.1 yds/ret. (65 returns for 1,059 yds.)

The point was, imagine if LSU did to Clemson what they did to a pretender in Oklahoma. Certainly you can see the difference between the LSU/Clemson game and the LSU/OU game. But 95 Nebraska did exactly that to Florida.

My major problem with your logic is you start the video by saying that the teams can’t be compared era to era because the offenses are so much more lethal now but you use the raw stats to justify Nebraska as the greatest team ever. Also I love how you call Oklahoma a pretender because they got smoked but Florida was a great team even though they got smoked. Lastly your reasoning that LSU had close games against ranked Texas and Alabama on the road so that’s a bad thing comparatively to Nebraska beating the hell out of nobodies. There’s just to many flaws in your pitch. If you put them on the field who wins? Who has the best resume ever? I’m not interested in eye test. I’m interested in actual results. Just my opinion

I'll say this having no dog in the fight, I'm old enough where I watched all 3 teams. I agree that 1995 Nebraska was by far the best team I've ever seen. A few more things he didn't touch on, CZcams or do research on the 1995 Florida Gators team, the sent a lot of that team to the NFL, and the 1996 Gators won the national championship. But they were picked to beat Nebraska by many experts, even though Nebraska was a 3 point favorite. Any football player will tell you the worst way to lose a football game is when a team lines it up and physically dominates you. Nebraska average around 400 yards rushing a game, that's just dumb. They we're so physical that if they didn't rank either team when Nebraska played Florida#2, Colorado #3, Kansas State# 8 and I believe Nick Sabans Michigan State team was #10, but you would have thought all of those were non top 25 teams playing Nebraska. Ed Reed or Sean Taylor took a pick 6 back against a terrible Boston college and barely won like 18-7 and Miami came a drop 2 point conversion from at least going to ot at Virginia tech a team they should have beaten by 20. The Alabama LSU game was good, not sure LSU wins vs a healthy Tua. And Clemson looked like they could win until late 3rd quarter. The last thing I'll say is, when teams knew Nebraska was gonna run, they still ran, and ran for chunks. I've heard people say the right defense can stop an option attack, that was no ordinary option attack. That was an option attack with a top 10 defense backing them up, a top 3 all-time coach, and a bunch of athletes that ran 4.3's in the 40. They were so scary that Nick Saban himself considered retiring until Tom Osborne told him "you're a great coach and you're gonna win championships, we just have a lot of really good players this year. They were scary good, go ask SEC #2 ranked, undefeated Florida..... Nebraska beat them 62-24 in the National championship game, and ran for like 550 something yards, really? Again that's so good it's dumb.

Some other stats if I'm reading them right...
The Huskers averaged 7 yards per carry rushing, with 11 players averaging over 5 yards per carry. LSU averaged 7.9 yards per PLAY (including passing).
8 Huskers averaged over 10 yards per reception, from that option offense.
LSU passed for a lot more yards (402 per game vs 142), but the Huskers didn't have to pass, they just marched down the field with 7 yards per rush.
The Huskers didn't allow a single QB sack the entire season LSU... sacked 35 times for 221 yards. ( or was that their opponents? It's worse if I grabbed the wrong LSU stat)
The Blackshirts had 20 interceptions, or 1.7 per game. LSU had 17 or 1.13 per game.
The Blackshirts allowed five punt returns for 12 yards over the entire season, or about 1 yard per game. LSU allowed 9 returns for 117 yards, or about 7.8 yards per game.
The Huskers averaged about 2.3 punts per game. LSU... 3.4 punts per game.
The Huskers never had a procedure penalty the entire season. LSU had 24 total penalties. I couldn't find enough stats for a better comparison.
I couldn't find some stats for the Huskers like tackles, sacks, and tackles for a loss, but LSU should compare well with the Huskers here.

Nebraska spent less than 8 minutes losing a game all season, and that was 7-0 against WSU after fumbling at the WSU 10 yard line on the opening drive. They allowed zero sacks all year, averaged 52+ a game, and allowed 5 punt returns (for 12 yards). They averaged 400 yards rushing a game, allowing only 78, and only gave up 6 rushing TDs all year. Nebraska broke the D1 record for yards per rush with 7 per. Nebraskas average margin of victory was 38 points (still a post WWII record) despite starters almost never playing after halftime. Nebraska averaged 29.8 points....per half. Nebraska beat 4 teams who finished in the top 10.
In the championship game, Nebraska held Florida to -28 rushing yards, 7 sacks, a safety, 3 INTs including a pick 6, set the championship game record for 524 rushing yards, set the Fiesta Bowl record for points in a quarter (29), and held Florida to less than half their season average of yards (only 269).
95 Nebraska was beyond unreasonably dominant. There really isn't any comparison.

The level of domination by both teams are on par with each other. People also forget that Nebraska did what they did with their 2nd string QB playing a significant role. I think if Burrows is not in those games LSU wins but not as convincingly. It is very difficult to compare still because this is the playoff era, and I do think the 2 should be separated. The pre-playoff era its Nebraska by far; post playoff era LSU by far. Nebraska if the playoff were in force would have also played the top competition for the title including I believe the undefeated PSU team which I do believe would have been the best match up for the Husker team. Both teams were smash football teams and played downhill. I really wish we would have seen that game! Stupid bowl game politics impeding what would have been great games back then.
All I can say is for all the hype that surrounded Florida that year with their 5 wide WAC attack. Even Spurrier should know better than to go no backfield from the 1. So much for the supposed "offensive genius". He was put in his place that day by a far more experienced coaching staff.

If all 4 came in the regular season that would be a little over 35% of the regular season schedule that was ranked opponents in the regular season for them. LSU with a 15 game schedule also had about 40% of the schedule was ranked opponents but only 3 of those games were in the regular season (1/4). 3-5 were VERY difficult to rank, but I feel the 71 Huskers were just SLIGHTLY stronger than Clemson in 2018 (schedule and dominance). 2001 Miami was IMMENSELY talented and very dominant, but they only played 1 Top 10 team (Nebraska in the championship). 2013 Florida State might be just outside my top 5 at #6. The 95 Huskers and 2019 LSU would rout half the national champions of the last 25 years though.

Interesting concept, I love it! I would have thought ‘04 USC might be in this but looking at their schedule it definitely wasn’t as dominant as any of these 3. Sadly none of my Buckeye teams measure up using this criteria.

Clemson had cupcake schedules both this year and last year so it's hard to tell, but I think their postseason performances were outliers both times. In 2018 they overperformed, but underperformed in 2019.

For the auburn, Bama, and Texas games, those teams were all down two scores at the end of the games and scored to bring it to within one score. There’s a huge difference in caliber between the. schedules... The deltas also show how much better LSU’s competition really was.... People also question LSU’s Defense not realizing the injuries they had to go through throughout the season and also having backups in in most 4th quarters... Everyone wants to take away from the Texas win because of the losses and forget all the hype and intensity in that game, not to mention it was early season on the road. I think everyone can agree that injuries ruined Texas' season and were much better than their final ranking, especially with what they did to Utah. LSU had the best single season of all time when you combine wins, post season awards, and all the records they broke. This doesn't diminish anything Nebraska or Miami accomplished. LSU was just on another level and they could still break the record for number of players drafted.

LSU made some poor mistakes but they were in complete control of that game for damn near the whole game. LSU also jumped out way ahead of Bama and Bama scored a trash time touchdown on them. TBH the only game I feel like LSU wasn't in control of was Texas. That is the only game I didn't know they'd win. Clemson was also close and had me at the edge of my seat until half time. If you take into account the actual gameplay and you watch these games, you would have seen that LSU completely controlled and dominated almost every game they played. Nebraska put up 63 in one half against Arizona St. And look at what the Husker offense did to Florida in the championship game. It's hard for teams to prepare for the option, when they are not seeing it during the course of the season. That is why teams like Oklahoma and Michigan struggle with Army. 1971 Nebraska also has an argument for they were literally picked by ESPN last year to be the greatest team ever. So it's either 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers or the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers that was the greatest team ever.

Definitely got this one right. 1995 Nebraska is still the *only* team in college football history to win every single game by double digits even against elite competition all capped off with the largest national championship blowout in CFB history over a Florida team who also won every single game by double digits. It's rare enough that one team gets to the national championships winning every game by double digits but for Nebraska to then blow a Florida team away by that kind of margin over the only other team ever to win every game by double digits is just unbelievable of a feet. There hasn't been a team since then that's even got to a natty winning every single game by double digit blowouts.

Good job breaking it down. The 95' Huskers were about as perfect as a team can get. The defense had speed that would match any team..any era. The offense would tell you where they were running..and you couldn't stop it. The 01' Miami team played a junk schedule and struggled in a few that an elite team wouldn't...Yes they were talented..but 20 of those players weren't real contributers...Huskers beat 01' Miami 55-14.
The 95' Huskers would roll the 19'LSU tigers as well...remember Nebraska was years ahead of other programs with diet, lifting.. Huskers had 4.5 guys everywhere...and the line was outrageous talented on both sides!
The big problem and why they dropped out was the walk-on program and the team getting away from traditional "Nebraska way" . Remember that program has produced more NFL players than all colleges combined!! That is smalls, Div 1 and JUCO.
Frost has brought that back and the program will jump back to the top of college football.

"The 95 huskers would roll the 19 tigers" not even close, LSU's backups would obliterate 95 nebraska 70-0, disregarding that nebraska ran up the middle every single play and how DL now are A LOT stronger than they were 25 years ago, the strategy behind our D and our O would leave nebraska in the dust.
Our backups would absolutely emasculate their D, because their DBs were slow, lacked athleticism to keep up with our athletes and our offensive strategy confused even extremely smart defenses.
Our D would have just used brute force to stop the D, look at the size of the 95 nebraska OL, then look at the size of the 2019 DL and tell me that our guys wouldn't be on the QB every single play

I want to Junior college at Coffeyville Kansas back in the mid-late 80's, which was a power house juco back then. In classes SO many of the football players when introducing themselves would tell you I'm from Ohio State or I'm from Boston College, I'm from Miami FL...etc. A lot of really good Cornhuskers went to CCC. I had diner with Nebraska Heisman trophy winner Mike Rozier, who spent a year at Coffeyville when a friend of mine was being recruited to go there.
