  • My 1 week experience with 2 different Vision Line Big Boys. Both with issues similar defects!
    Also, this is video 1 in my Big Boy series as I cover all the items in the super set (minus the box car), and will give away one of the items from the super set after the final video.

    I purchased the same model Big Boy, put it on the track and sure enough got the flashing cab light. Because of your video I had no issue soldering the wire back on myself. I couldn't believe the top is held on by only four screws. Keep up the great work.

    Your review is top shelf and relevant and reinforced why not to purchase such a 2,500.00 model with known issues? Really not to solder properly, batting issues with smoke units and then OWNER pays shipping for known issues? QC non-existent? You a better man than I. Now just loathe the ten😢s of thousands spent over 50 years of purchasing Lionel. Not a hater yet between out dated electronics, no parts a couple years post production, zinc rot- just no fun! But thanks, you’ve reinforced my decision to just watch all these fantastic you tube productions & enjoying those lucky enough to see these models on the tracks and actually running! 😊

      Zinc rot is what bothers me most about Lionel, has any MTH model suffered with zinc rot? I can't recall ever seeing any. Lionel dealt with zinc rot way back in 1937 with their 700E scale NYC Hudson which they resolved in 1938 so why, in 2024, are we getting stuck with high end models with QC issues as severe as zinc rot? I don't trust Lionel at this point.

    This is one of the most in-depth reviews of the 2024 Lionel Vision Line Big Boys that I have seen. Kudos to you for showing the smoke unit features, as well as the other features of this fine model. I received this same model (the oil burning version) during the holidays from my wife and I love it. However, I did not notice the ash pan glow effect (I only ran the engine twice, I need to enlarge my layout). From what I was told this oil burning version does not have the ash pan glow effect, due to it not being coal-fired- unless I am missing something. Maybe you can let me know, or maybe one of your followers? I would appreciate it. Thanks!

    I have two of these Big Boys, 4019 and 4025 (Train Loft exclusive). 4025 has been great, zero issues. 4019 however stopped making stereo sound. Me being handy, and having engines damaged by Lionel repairs in the past, decided I better investigate it myself. Found that the wiring to the IR generator was pinched by the factory under the rear drivers. Had to take it all apart, desolder the wiring from the IR LED, run new wiring into the engine, then… Had no issues. I too had “wet” wiring under the removable plate from smoke fluid, I initially thought that was the sound issue, but I was able to get that all remedied as well. So, yes, gotta go slow with the smoke on these and give them some time to absorb, and also use a needle dropper for the whistle as well. Great video! And also love Berwyn’s been there many times and are great people to deal with.

    This is a great video!! Thank you for taking the time to address issues with these Visionline Big Boys. Your camera work is clear and focused, really appreciate it. I bought a Visionline Class A (with caution and concerns) and I've operated the smoke units enough to make sure no burning odor happened, it didn't. Since then, I've turned all smoke units off, reserving them for a short show but when I operate it for myself, - no smoke!!. Fortunately, my Class A has not demonstrated any of these issues so I feel lucky. I guess Lionel should have bought MTH smoke units since they've been superior ever since their inception. 🙂🙄 I think I'll hold off on a Visionline Big Boy since I have the last JLC model which was an early Legacy version, same detailing. Watching for a Visionline C&O Allegheny or Virginian Blueridge if they are prototypically correct. Thanks again for your information, on these high end models, videos like this are very enlightening.

      In their simplicity, prewar and postwar 'toy' trains are superior in quality to these tech plagued high end models built with cheap construction. I wonder what these techy models would be like if they were built with 1940's - 50's quality control. Lionel - at least go back to Korea, they were far better than China.

    I finally opened my Big Boy after sitting in the shipping box for 6-mos. 'Seems my blow down fan isn't working. Plenty of billowing smoke from within the unit (kinda cool actually) but no blowdown. My question: reticent to sending to Lionel (I've heard too many horror stories) and a deep desire to understand my own maintenance and repair, is opening one of these up all that challenging? My guess is my fan unit needs a little TLC that's all.

  • @dagoodsoldier6715
    @dagoodsoldier6715 Před 5 měsíci +2

    I have two questions: (1) how much clearance do you have between the track and that trestle? Looks like the big boy overhang wouldn’t fit. (2) I have that 21” UP baggage car. The one with the 3-axle trucks. The wheels on the 3rd axel scrub up against the bottom of the kinematic coupler cover. It increases the rolling friction to the point where it feels like 3 passenger cars instead of one. Obviously no problem to a big boy that could probably pull thirty 21” passenger cars but I just wonder have you noticed that.

    • @BigBoyTrains-
      @BigBoyTrains-  Před 5 měsíci

      The Big Boy cleared the trestle just fine. The camera angle made it look closer than what it was.
      The 21" cars, for the first 2 months I had them I pulled them with the tiny Russian Decapod 1630, that's at the end of the video. I have another video showing Frisco 1630 pulling them with little difficulty.

      My engine had no problems either. My concern was wear on the engine having to pull a car with more rolling friction than normal. Especially when you are pulling up inclines. Your incline looks very steep btw. What grade is your incline?
