After having all the stuff in a closet for 5 years, I decided to pull it out and put it together and start flying. I am a complete noob with electric and I would have never been able to figure it all out (still figuring it out) without this particular video. Thank you so much for putting out a video for someone who is completely starting from scratch. Much appreciated. Mike from Texas
This post is old. I'm guess I'm old. RC has come a long way from what I remember. Crystal radios and the like. How far we've come, just the fact that you can click on CZcams and instantly get all this info is pretty amazing. Kids don't know how good they have it. Thanks for getting me back into the hobby Josh & Flight Test! You guys do some pretty boss crashing, I mean flying heh heh.
Yes. I still have my first RC radio, a Pulse Commander single channel (rudder only), but the plane, a 2T with .049 was thrown away about ten years ago,. The nitro fuel had turned the balsa to mush near the firewall, and the covering discoloring and cracking and peeling from storage. Kept the 'ol .049. Lots of hours watching that tail wag! I'm not going to dig the radio out of storage now, but I believe it was crystal, 27 mhz, as was the Heathkit 8 channel built from a kit. Still works too! But its not legal anymore, wideband. I was tempted to use the micro 1205 servos again. I know who built them. ;-) But they are four wire instead of three. And now a 9 or 12 gram with metal gears can be had for
Airborne the radian is great! I have the full sized, I have had a 2.5 hour flight on it with thermals! The old equipment is hard to get rid of anymore. Everybody wants the new electric stuff. I have a .91 nitro trainer for sale. It does not want to sell. It stinks.
Yep..no more days of ease like just plugging in a frequency color coded chip and fly the color on your antenna and..BOOM!...you are bound and RTF. 40 yrs of rc and now I am usually somewhat lost in the tech..lol
Thank you for conveying the information without wasting a lot of time! Concise communication is much appreciated.
At last. As a newbie I have been a tad confused by some of the electronics and other videos try to explain, but somehow I still couldn't work it out. This video is fantastic as it shows the correct way to connect everything up, in a neat concise manner. I can now go ahead with my P38L and get it finished. Well done Josh
It may be an old post, yes i am old now but it is the only one I have seen that has helped me to get the throttle/motor to work full stop. I do look at the videos often and really enjoy what Flite Test put out. Thanx Josh, really helpful for us UK builders.
I think these types of videos are very useful. Great presentation Josh.
The direction of the prop depends if you are facing forward or aft when looking for CW or CCW.
Sometimes a mechanical reversing of the servo is also possible by removing the arm and putting it back on 180 degree. If you have the linkage clearance this can be another option.
THIS IS THE VIDEO I NEEDED... THANK YOU

I like your videos. Really helpful for a guy like me who is used to glow engines but now wanting to get into electric flying. Fed up tinkering with carbs and cleaning oily planes.
Got some old balsa planes from my neighbor and it was my first time repairing planes, this helped a LOT thanks for that
This was a great video for newbies or folks that hadn't done this in a while (my hand is up at this point). Well done, simple to understand.
Nice work guys, great video for newcomers, it's amazing how quickly we take info like this for granted.
Thank you, this helped. I also linked this video to someone on your forum because they didn't know why there motor spun as soon as they plugged it into they're battery.
this vlog helped me alot. it's been a long time since I've felt with the electronics on rc. The last one I had (still have) has analog FM. Thanks for the orientation.
My first transmitter was a dx5e. The first time I needed to setup everything I had a lot af problems and alot off quistions. This is a perfect video for the beginners.
Multi rotor beginner series please!
Great video covering the basics... we all need to start somewhere!
This video really helped me out when I was just starting out. Thank you so much for making this specific video, it was exactly what I needed!
Wish i had this video back in the day i stared off in the hobby. im sure its going to help out alot of beginners out there, Well done guys
Very informative video, it seems every winter I need to refresh my memory on electronics setup.
Thank you for the video, Josh! It really helps me build my first RC Plane.
This is probably the most helpful video out there for electronics. Thank you.
Good for the beginners and for the guys that won't read them technical sheets ! Good job Josh !
That was very informative. I'm in the process of building my first plane. I'm going to start out with a simulator while I wait on my electronics to get in. You guys have inspired me to get into this hobby. Thanks for your wealth of information. I really enjoy watching your videos.
+Cowboy 2131 I am asking you because I guess you probably know. If the remote and receiver are both 2.4 gHz, is it a guarantee that they are compatible?
no that is not the case you have to have the receiver that is for your remote
Josh you did a great job on the video!
Thank you so so much... like always you guys are so informative and so willing to help that’s why my grandson and I continue to buy your stuff.
I wish I could post a picture of the Corsair I just finished. I did a custom paint job on it and it flies like a dream and it’s super fast and my grandson loves it!
Love to see an episode on howto paint foam airplanes. Keep up the good work...
Good stuff! I'm thinking of getting back into RC after 30 years. Used to fly 2 stroke fuel planes forever ago, but looks like electric is probably the way to go these days. The electronics have come a long way!
Josh is a very good teacher.
I'll reply for Josh :)
He used to paint aftermarket car parts.

Damn your name is chad
New to the sport, this helped me to get a better understanding. thank you
Good stuff!!! I always use my $6 turnigy servo tester for both, motor and servos before I install any electronics. I don't want any surprises especially if my electronics coming from a crashed airplane. You should make video how to use a servo tester. Great video guys. Keep up the good tips.

Wonderful skill and creativity !
A great vid for us noobs. Thanks. I really liked the tape on the prop to get the direction of spin. What a great idea. If I could humbly submit a request: it would be a short "flight tip" on doing the same thing for a pusher prop. I am still confused as to what direction should be what! Keep up the awesome work.
You were a GREAT HELP man thanks...you basically answered most of my questions!
Josh, one of my buddies lost three fingers on his left hand due to an IED blast in AFG, he is asked all the time what happened. He tells kids he used to pick his nose and his fingers rotted off. Lol. Much respect for you, buddy. Keep up the good, hard work and who cares HOW your hands appear? I didn't tune in to watch HAND MODELS.
This is so helpful. Thank you.
Helo
This is so well done. Great stuff
Oh, a month ago I have learn all that electronic things in the hard way... damn.... Flytest your program is excelent. Could you please make an episode about programming a TX? Thanks.
Can any one tell me how to mount the motor like just with screws or do you bolt it
I am new to computer-driven transmitters. This is all mystifying. Thank you for helping me square away my sailplane.
ive been looking for this tutorial for my motorized tank
thank you so much
I learned the hard way about reversing the throttle...
Dude I chopped my knuckles up trying to get this old airplane connected to my transmitter. Well, it finally connected while my knuckles were near the prop.
Same
Hi guys, I agree with a lot of the other comments on how to set up the HK KK2 board,it could be a bit confusing on how to set it up, ie the P and the I gain, or maybe how to flash it with V1.5 firmware etc. It's a great board for the buck but with all of the functions it has it could be intimidating for some, Thanks keep up the good work!
Helpful and quick to the point
Nice job Josh!
A good example of what a Turnigy Plush calibration sounds like. Good vid,
So I never knew about setting the esc up to the full power and low pawer setting on the left stick. Can I still do this with my esc ?
Very helpful, specially for guys like me,totally new to electric !
Do you have any tutorials for receiver setup on gas engines particularly the DLE 20 with connected tachometer?
Very useful! Thank you! Could you please make a tutorial on how to set up and connect the electronics for simple FPV plane?
awesome vid guys thanks for letting me know this stuff very carful!!!!!!!
Thanks for the great tips!
Thanks a lot for these tips!
This certainly has helped..Thank you !!!
Thank you so much! This is the perfect video!
Thank you soo much! you all are the best!
+FliteTest Hi guys, the best results that I have had was with the Gregs Electro Blog (I found it on google) definately the most useful course i've followed.
I was hoping for the same. I have a KK board coming and hopefully will have all the motors and ESC's shortly as well. Going for a hex since I want to do video with it primarily and not so much aerobatics. My main question would be the P and I functions more than their settings. Seems like everyone has settings but I have yet to find out what they actually mean and do.
great episode!
I now own 2 KK 2.0 boards, but I've got to agree setting up the first was a bit of fun. Would be great to see a vid just on setting up a KK 2.0 with an H-Quad. Would also be good to see how to flash some F-20A ESC's with Simon K's firmware as well to complete a really cost effective build. Have a general "Things you can flash" episode. Dress David up as Flash Gordon, have a 60's flashback show.
Very helpful, thank you!
do you always need an ESC? and how do you calculate the right size electrically for the ESC?
thanks
I have the same ESC, but at the time to calibrate it's only one constant beep, what could be happening?
Thanks.
hk lists several different 24gr motors what speed do you like to use hxm 2730-xxxx
6:13 thats a very good tip. I saw a lot of people breaking servos by using long screws on the horn.
What is the difference between this binding process and the way you bind spectrum controllers to BNF aircraft?
Great Video Keep It Up!
Is the esc calibration specific to the esc or the transmitter?
I don't think it can be. He was just telling the esc how far he can go
Great video my friend ☺
Thanks Josh, best friend.
I might get the power pack c from your wedsite and what plane would I need and how could I hook it up to the spektrum do 4. And if you don’t mind could you give me a list of parts if you could. Thank you love your videos.
Taught me alot on how do i put my bi plane together
whats the difference between an esc and the motor controllers you find inside the servos?
Do you have to use the bullet connectors or can you just solder the wire tips together and heatshrink it?
I'm wanting to build a good indoor/outdoor plane, I already have a champ and a mini t-28. Which should I choose?
Josh, you must have read my mind .. Just got my Bixler 2 yesterday and was scratching my head while trying to figure out how the electronics go together. I went with a Hobbyking set (receiver, ESC..). This video helped me a lot, now I just have to figure out what the numbers on the receivers respond to. The little manual does not have a list in it and so far I couldn't find anything..
thanks a lot josh!!!!
Thanks, this helped solve my problem.
is there any book that might get me started with multi rotors, planes and rc in general??
Does anyone know what motor is used on ghis pod? And do the esc and mktor come with the connectors ready?
i have a dynam transmitter and reciever that came from a rtf heli that crashed, how can i center the servos for this?
If I'm binding my aircraft to a new transmitter and both have been used before do i need to calibrate the throttle on the esc?
Maybe a giant scale electronics video?? Awsome vid flite test!!!!
thanks Josh!!!
Basic stuff but very good and useful. Can you do a video on proper mounting for EDF systems? I know it won't apply to your swappable series but I think it would be useful.
How To setup a plane which has aileron, rudder, elevator? I have hobbyking HK-T6A transmitter and receiver. I have to connect aileron servo to channel 4 but the servo doesn't moves at all on channel 4. But if I change mode in PC software T6 config. Channel 4 works but channel 2 doesn't. Where I need to make changes so that all things I mean 4 servos also works.? Please help to finish my build. I m building RC MERMAID sea plane. Thank you.
correct me if i'm wrong, but all the servos and the receiver itself get their power through the throttle connection from the ESC to the receiver. right?
Do they make transmitters with selector switches that you can bind to multiple receivers and then easily switch between airplanes later after they're all bound to the transmitter?
Hungry Guy yes
Can you guys make a video on How to Properly Dispose of Damaged or Old Lipo Batteries? thanks and keep up the good work!
Really helpfull video, thanks a lot :)
I am sorry friend
if I have a sce of 5V and 3A
Can I use a 5V and 2A receiver?
or would this damage the electronics?
can you make a video for how to connect your FPV system to your transmitter?
Very useful. However, I would like to know what to do if the motor doesn't have bullet connectors installed. Would you solder some on?
can you please help me. i am connecting my esc with avr micro controller instead of receiver and i can't decide to connect which pins of avr to esc connector? you seems to know about it alot and this is my final year project. Please help.
Hay I got the spektrum DXe bonded to the spektrum AR410 but I don’t have any throttle any ideas
great vid like the info
Is there a video similar to this for FPV gear and how it connects to the battery, reciever, etc? How does telemetry come into this? What about ArduPilot?
What do you do with the white connector on the battery? Is it just for charging
when i connected my 2650 mah 20c lipo battery to my 30A esc there was a large spark, is this normal?
Which direction does the motor turn in the bixler, and which way does the prop go.
Shouldn't you have disconnected the battery when switching the leads from the ESC to the motor? And, the two beeps from the ESC means something, right?
