Don't let your FMF Exhaust blow up your YZ125! FMF Factory Fatty Installation Detail You Need to See

  • This exhaust system is a work of art, however be very careful when you install it! This pipe can come in contact with your radiator hose that runs down to your water pump, and no doubt that would increase your engines operating temperature and possibly rupture the hose all together. Not good!
This is a FMF Factory Fatty, part number 024077 being installed on a 2024 Yamaha YZ125, which would be the same for the 2022 and 2023 model years. Likely future model years as well.
If you buy an aftermarket exhaust, expect it to be different. These are performance pipes meant to change the power characteristics of your bike so they are typically very different than stock as you will see in this video.
I am going to try some different pipe combos on this bike as well. The Pro Circuit pipe is also a very different shape and fit than both the FMF and stock pipes.
Anyway, you don't want to risk creating additional heat for your already high stress motor, and you certainly don't want to risk having a coolant hose melt through a break. In either case you put your motor at risk.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have had similar experiences with your YZ125!

That piece of hose is a chafe hose.you should put one on the new hose it is to protect it from the exhaust and chafing on the frame from the vibration.fmf makes nice pipes!!!

Can't you just twist the hose a little to make it route closer to frame than pipe???

Not really. It is what it is but I think it should be fine. But just be aware...

I got the same bike and just installed that same pipe and I’m glad I saw this just a little after I installed it

Things I don’t like about fmf. Their customer service is trash, they act like you’re dumb if you call with questions. Second they do nothing for 2 stroke engine work, or jetting. Pro circuit has jetting charts that will get u close and they still do cylinder work on these 2 strokes. They will also take the time on the phone to help you out with jetting or other questions.
I got an 88 CR500 that has an fmf port job with a gnarly pipe and it’s fantastic. But this work was done back in the 90’s. FMF use to do engine work and jetting but all they got is exhaust now it’s a shame.

There are 3 different FMF pipe's and or Pro Circuit will definitely fit better

not a factory hose , the difference in shape , along with a larger pipe cut your tolerances . i bet if youd measure the distance from engine to aftermarket hose , and engine to aftermarket hose , youd see the oem is more inboard . you even said the new hose is slightly thicker hose... furthering the loss in tolerance. put bigger and bigger parts on , less room .....its your combo , not the pipe. id look into some DEI silicone sleeve , and maybe some steel wire to pull the new hose inboard a little.

I ended up putting the stock hose back on. Aftermarket hose is just way thicker. As you said, could use a sleeve, but in the end, happy to use the stock hose. Thanks for the comment.

We use HGS, when it comes to 2T's you cant do better than HGS, no such issues

I'll bet if you dyno'd that FMF pipe you'll find there's no significant horsepower gain. You'll probably even lose power. Especially with stock internals. Yamaha knows what they're doing. They don't leave a lot of horsepower on the table when engineering these bikes.

Not lose power but shifting power to mid and up

@@harm97 at the cost of lost torque and burnt exhaust valves.

Much physic - math required - major = temperature!
