It’s not mandatory, but you’ll get less experience the less damage Don Tonberry does. So you need him to do 99,999 damage because that’s the max experience per hit you’ll get from the trick. After a few turns, you’ll get 99 levels. The amount of damage he does is determined by the character that hit him. The more kills they have, the more damage he does. So if you’re ok with doing the trick more times, than it doesn’t really matter, but it definitely helps speed up the whole process. Anymore questions, feel free to ask 😊
Do you have the settings right? You should be getting a lot of experience. You need the triple ap, overdrive to ap, and triple overdrive to get the max stats. And you also need to have the attacking character on stoic overdrive mode, with the other two on comrade.

I settled for double weapon slots. triple ap and overdrive to ap. Took to long to farm items from one eye because I was barely able to beat him. Figured working on my 3 mains will take 3x as long but ultimately might be quicker than continuing to fill over drives before facing one eye then hoping I get lucky with a weapon drop
Just make sure that the character you use to this trick is just killed enough monster, because karma is based the damage on how many your character monster killed, it means the more you killed the higher the karma deals damage and the higher overdrive gauge you get to convert to AP, that means if you use your undevelope character in this trick, it will just gained lower AP even if you have weapon, triple AP, triple overdrive and overdrive to AP
okay so. as long as you have overdrive > AP and 999 kills it's STILL insanely busted. I'm not sure doing the extra grinding actually saves time that point. however. by the time you have 999 kills for one guy then that's also enough time for a lot of things too
Honestly by the time you get to this point, someone on your team should have that many kills. Wakka’s just the easiest because he affects most enemies in some ways, especially flyers. And then when you get into fights with 3 and 4 enemies at a time, you can really rack up the kills with him.
Paul West true but this was just the basics of how the trick works. I didn’t want to pile up more in the video than needed to be haha. Thanks for this and also thanks for your chocobo race guide the only celestial weapon I need now is wakkas and I can now max out their stats while having their powerful weapons as well
Everyone needs to have it. It turns the characters overdrive bar into exp. So that character has to have that effect active on them or it doesn’t work.
I never heard of this before. I didn’t know we still got exp for escaping. Do we get items too? Because Dark matter was hard for me to farm (stupid chocobo race).
Hey dude! thanks for this, I did this trick years ago and I playing now in Steam and I don´t remember well how to do the tonberry trick.. and this is the vid with the most perfect explanation that I watched. I have a question.. to defeat all the dark aeons, Nemesis and Penance you have to fill all the sphere grid with all the characters.. but I have a doubt of the amount of spheres I have to get to replace the empy ones.. I want 99.999 HP - 999 MP - 255 str - 255 def - 255 mag - 255 magdef - 255 luck... how many of each spheres I need to get to those numbers?
Honestly I’m not sure tbh. If you’re going the stats route, you’ll need a lot. If you’re going the Yojimbo Kill everything route, you might not need any lmao
@Mariano Meschini You don't want to waste an ability slot for Break HP Limit. That's the most common misconception for many people. Crunching the numbers, the community has found out long time ago that you can do every fight with the 9.999 cap and you then can use the free slot on the armor for another ability. Best end-game gear has: Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Potion and Defense +20% Also, as soon as your Luck value reaches 205 you don't need to put ANY points in your Accuracy value because with a luck value of 205 you will always hit (well...as long as your aren't blinded ^^) even if you had 1 Accuracy. Next advice: as soon as you hit 170 Agility nothing changes compared to the Agility value being 255 except the very first turn in the fight but not to determinate if the enemy or your party has the first hit but only in which order your party members turns are placed. So with both, accuracy and agility, you can stop farming these quickly and save some precious grinding-hours = )
Can someone please explain this a little better? I've got this exact setup. Everyone has all 3 perks. The correct overdrives, I hit donny with my stoic character 4 times almost every battle. I have 999+ kills with said character. Yet when all is said and done I'm only getting at most 60 levels. How's this guy getting 90+ hitting less times? What am I missing?
I have always wondered why Tidus, Auron. And Wakka gets so many AP because they killed over 900. I usually use Rikku to steal and Yuna to heal. Rarely uses Kimari or Lulu in a fight after Seymour on cliffs of Mt. Gagazet.
Super super helpful video I would say is the bribe for triple ap worth it. I’m so backed up on levels without any spheres. I have a slot for triple ap but just havnt had to use it
Do you happen to have a recommended way to get the other rest of the required winning formula materials to add triple OD to the weapons? When you get the x99 from arena owner, it was only enough to add to 3 weapons.
Leveling up and getting stronger is about the only way. It can be a grind until you get the strength to beat it. I’d suggest grinding some of the stronger monsters in the arena til your strong enough to take it down.
I tried FFX several times but every time it came to Blitz-ball i broke off. In the beginning i want to level up fast but how does one get there. First 999 small kills? And then?
you can have 99 level in 30 seconde with pampa, and BEFORE the fight seymour gagazet. Im french but if you want i can explain ;) technic Pampa and tomberry are famous, but its better and quickly with an other technic
It honestly depends. Some fights are longer than others. I would say as soon as you feel he’s too close, flee. There’s no harm in testing how many hits you can get in and just fleeing.

By the time you reach this segment of the game where you need to use this trick, at least one of your characters should already have it or be really close
How is it my characters only get around 20/30 levels? I'm even killing the little green bastard at the end. And before anyone asks, yes, I do have this setup.
You should be getting 99 levels. If you’re missing triple overdrive, or triple AP, you won’t get as much. You have to have the exact setup for the trick to work. And I’d recommend not killing him. Do just enough damage to get him to hit you, and that’s it. And it has to be a character with 999 kills that hits him. So use that character exclusively for a while, then go back and do it again. I always use Wakka for the trick, since I feel like he’s the easiest character to rack up that many kills with.
@@Soldier1stClass I'm sorry, I don't want to sound like a dick, but what does "and before anyone asks, yes, I do have this setup" mean? I have everything. I'm not sure about how many kills my characters have accumulated but both Tidus and Auron take 99999 damage with every karma, so I'm always using them as sacrifices (Wakka only gets about 89000, so he's out). Triple AP, Triple OD, OD > AP, sometimes even BDL (as a fourth slot on the weapons, not as an alternative to the three main abilities). I don't know why but after a dozen or so turns of Tidus/Auron hitting the tonberry and getting karma'd, either after running or switching to the celestial weapon and killing it (both Tidus and Auron have finished their grids, so I don't care if they get less AP with their celestials), Rikku and Lulu (the ones I'm training at the moment) only gain around 25 levels. Again, yes, they have weapons with all three abilities, they're set to comrade, one casts life, the other haste on Tidus/Auron.
@@Soldier1stClass I've found the problem: my sacrifice character was wearing an armour with BHPL (with a total of over 60k hp); I switched Tidus's armour, reduced his HP to 9999 and bam! 99 levels for everyone!
Thank you Simone I am having the same problem (same setup but they only get 12 levels) it would have to do with my sacrifice character having 31518 hp by the sounds of it.... changed that bhpl armour out to a non bhpl one and working much better now!
I’d say it wouldn’t really matter because you can only top out at 99 levels, so hitting it more than what’s required for 99 levels doesn’t really do much for ya.
How do you get enough items to give all six of your party members the triple overdrive though... you need 30 of a certain item for one weapon, so 180 in total. You only get 99 from the monster arena, so you need 81 more. Bribing costs you 900k gil for 15, so I don’t see how that can be an option?
Yeah unfortunately you have to have the exact setup or it doesn’t work. The abilities are super important to getting the trick to work because of what they do.
Soldier you are great at explaining everything I appreciate the hell out of you. I did want to let you know though that in this video you miss read and miss spoke the AP gain. Lol it wasn’t 2 or 300,000 AP. That wouldn’t get you that many sphere levels. It was 2 and 3 million. Lol
I have all of the required stuff but why am I not getting the amount of xp? It’s taking me at least 5 fights to get to 99, not 1 like yours. I have overdrive to AP, Triple overdrive, and triple AP. Comrade on Rikku and Auron, and Stoic on Wakka. I run the same play except I have auto phoenix instead of performing the action. But I’m only gaining 20 levels….why? What am I missing?
Does Wakka have 999 kills? Or are you using break hp limit on your armor? You can’t have more than 9999 hp or the game won’t register high enough damage dealt to your character for the xp to be high enough.
do i need a weapon with all those abilities for each characters or only the one who has 999 kills? im going for the platinum trophy so i need to comple the grid for everyone.
No quick attack doesn't make it faster, but you don't really need your attacker to attack a bunch for the trick to work. In fact, it's better to not haste them and just attack normally until Tonberry moves forward 4 times. That's plenty of time to get your 99 lvls worth of damage and extra attacks just waste time or you may even kill the Tonberry if you're strong enough
Hey me again I finally got to the point where I can start hardcore grinding sphere levels with the don tonberry and one eye tricks but I have a question does everybody in the party example Tidus Yuna and Auron all have to have triple ap, overdrive to ap, and triple overdrive on their weapons or does 1 party member need to have it
MrBahamutt90 there’s no real way other than doing damage to Don Tonberry and seeing how much damage he does to you. If he does 99,999 damage, you’ve killed enough. If not, then use that character in an area where you get large groups of enemies and just start slaying haha
I will start off with this, I don't have the OD>AP on the weapons, but I get 0 every time I escape, but I have Titus on stoic (999 kills), Yuna on Comrade, Kimahri on Comrade, all 3 have triple AP on Weapons, shouldn't I be getting something or is the OD>AP a requirement? Thanks in advance for the answer
You need all 3 to make this work. You don’t get AP for running away. But you do get AP if you charged any overdrive during the fight and then run away. That’s why OD>AP works. You attack with Tidus, then revive, then defend with the other character, then repeat all the steps again until he’s too close after walking up to you, and then you flee
I had the same problem. Try talking to the guy a bunch of times, because he only uncovers one monster per talk. And I mean start talking to him all over, not just use the chat option.
I know this is quite an old video so I dont fully expect an answer but theres always a chance. Is there any way I can find out how many friends my character has killed? Because I've done my best looking everywhere I can but I just cant find it.
Hit a tonberry and whatever damage he does with karma divide it by 100. That's how many enemies that character has killed. That's the only way I personally know of to find that stat.
Do you have everything on your weapons that I have in the video? Because it requires everything to be exact for it to work. You can't have break hp limit on your gear. He has to be at 9,999 health or it lowers the amount of experience you get. Go back and make sure every setting is exact to what I have.
@@Soldier1stClass all three characters have the AP- OD and 30 AP equip. Wakka is stoic and tidus and Auron are both on comrade. Also Wakka is getting 99,999 hits and I wait until Don is within arms length of my team before we split.

Worth adding if you put auto phoenix and auto haste on the 3 characters it makes it quicker
Paul West true but this was just the basics of how the trick works. I didn’t want to pile up more in the video than needed to be haha. This trick has enough steps as it is, but it is a decent tip to know so I appreciate the input. If you’re looking for more videos like this one, I’ll be filming the lightning dodger and butterfly hunt videos soon as well, and I’m working on a top 5 moments in Final Fantasy video so there’s gonna be plenty of content on the channel if you’d like to subscribe. You can also turn on notifications so you’ll be one of the first to know when I upload a new video. If you so choose, welcome to the ranks of Soldier!
TIL you can defend by pressing triangle... No more wasting items trying to skip turns!
Yeah this method is far better than grinding in omega ruins even with triple AP weapon
Okay this video is the best one I have ever seen has all the information you need in one spot at the very beginning of the video so all I have to do is pause it and complete that information and then you go into describing the rest of it very well done
Thanks for this and also thanks for your chocobo race guide the only celestial weapon I need now is wakkas and I can now max out their stats while having their powerful weapons as well
Holy hell that is a TON of prep work
But totally worth it when maxing out your sphere grid
Comrade unlocked by normal gameplay.... seems to be everyone except Kimari for me, who has nothing but stoic considering how little I used him
Are you sure the multiplier isn't 10 and not 100? And does it have to be 1,000 fiends for this to work? Or just for it to work to its full potential?
so does Overdrive > AP spill over from the sacrifice character if your characters have comrade or does EVERYONE need to have overdrive > AP ?
Everyone needs to have it. It turns the characters overdrive bar into exp. So that character has to have that effect active on them or it doesn’t work.
Thanks for the informative video 😊
I never heard of this before. I didn’t know we still got exp for escaping. Do we get items too? Because Dark matter was hard for me to farm (stupid chocobo race).
No, you have to finish a fight to get the items. Unless you steal but idk why you would steal from tonberry or even if Tonberry has anything to steal
Hey dude! thanks for this, I did this trick years ago and I playing now in Steam and I don´t remember well how to do the tonberry trick.. and this is the vid with the most perfect explanation that I watched.
@@Soldier1stClass haha I did the Yojimbo route years ago, now I will go to the normal one.. if I can, thanks!
@Mariano Meschini You don't want to waste an ability slot for Break HP Limit. That's the most common misconception for many people. Crunching the numbers, the community has found out long time ago that you can do every fight with the 9.999 cap and you then can use the free slot on the armor for another ability. Best end-game gear has: Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect, Auto-Potion and Defense +20%
Also, as soon as your Luck value reaches 205 you don't need to put ANY points in your Accuracy value because with a luck value of 205 you will always hit (well...as long as your aren't blinded ^^) even if you had 1 Accuracy.
@@Bambuzzsprosse Finally I did months ago exactly what you wrote. I got the platinum. thanks!!
@@Meschini1990 Awesome, congratz = )
Super helpful and easy to understand guide! Thank you!
Gagazet.
Yeah I love Lulu but her and Kimahri are borderline worthless lmao
Thanks man it helped out a lot
Super super helpful video
I would say is the bribe for triple ap worth it. I’m so backed up on levels without any spheres. I have a slot for triple ap but just havnt had to use it
Where were you when the game came out?😁
Do you happen to have a recommended way to get the other rest of the required winning formula materials to add triple OD to the weapons? When you get the x99 from arena owner, it was only enough to add to 3 weapons.
Bribe Sandworms.
How much
Great Vid but I think you meant 3 million for wakka and 2 million Ap for the character
Hey, man. I'm Brazilian and your videos are so helpful!
Anyway, I keep dying to this one eye, you know any good stratregy to kill it?
Leveling up and getting stronger is about the only way. It can be a grind until you get the strength to beat it. I’d suggest grinding some of the stronger monsters in the arena til your strong enough to take it down.
If Yuna is powerful enough, you could just summon the Magus Sisters and have them annihilate it.
Summon anima and use his Oblivion and what you want to do is use that one he has about six to seven thousand Health it will be a one shot every time
The Emerald Enderman Or, If Yuna’s strong enough, Anima’s basic attack will be good enough.
@@yaboi2500 after sending unit down Origins original sphere grid his regular attack became extremely powerful
I tried FFX several times but every time it came to Blitz-ball i broke off. In the beginning i want to level up fast but how does one get there. First 999 small kills? And then?
Omg you are a good thank you for this trick its amazing
You’re very welcome! Good luck!
Hi! Did this today! But only tidus (with the Triple Weapon equipped ) got a LOT of AP, not auron and Wakka :(
Did you have their overdrive modes set to comrade and their weapons all set up with the same abilities as Tidus?
What a helpful guide! Thanks a lot! 🍻👍🏾😁
you can have 99 level in 30 seconde with pampa, and BEFORE the fight seymour gagazet. Im french but if you want i can explain ;) technic Pampa and tomberry are famous, but its better and quickly with an other technic
How many rounds do you recommend? Like do I escape as soon as he is within stabbing range?
It honestly depends. Some fights are longer than others. I would say as soon as you feel he’s too close, flee. There’s no harm in testing how many hits you can get in and just fleeing.
I have all 10 of of all fiends from stolen faith, but no Don Tonberry :/
Wait so you dont have to kill him?
Eldavinhio nope. Not at all. It’s actually better if you don’t. Makes the process much faster. He has a lot of HP haha
@@Soldier1stClass cool cheers! Im currently playing through this again so will def try this! And i suppose ill subscribe aswell 😊

Eldavinhio no problem, glad it helped! Thanks for subscribing again! I just released the Butterfly Hunt video today so you can catch that on the channel also!
Should you get triple AP weapons? Would it take with triple ap accessories?
Sick
Thanks for the Awesome Ap Level tricks👍
How does don tonberry behave if I use entrust on an ally instead of attacking him (after attacking him once)? Is this even worth doing?
How can you tell how many monsters a character has killed?
Does every abilty need to be on 1 weapon or can also having it like this
Weapon: ap-overdrive, triple ap
Armor: triple overdrive
Just curious
I think it has to be on the weapon, cause I can’t remember if there’s a restriction on armor abilities or not.
Thanks!
I keep fighting......but no AP gain. Are you supposed to fight him or flee?
Where do you get Wings of Discovery and Dark matters need Alot Lol
Hello. How do i get comrade ? I've been battling for a while now and still cant seem to obtain that overdrive.
I mean really the only way is to just defend and let your party members take damage. That’s about the only quick way I can think of to get it.
Brilliant was not sure how to do it. Thank you.
You’re very welcome.
What if you can’t fight one eye yet?
Why didn't you use flee with tidus? Instead of individually escaping
Ya know, I’m honestly not sure why I didn’t use it LMAO
@@Soldier1stClass I live on that move lmao when I was monster hunting when I ran into a group I already captured I'd use tidus to flee hahahaha
@yukki24 I normally use it is the crazy part. This video is several years old, so I’m not sure what I was thinking at the time lmao
Killing 999 monsters? That is a very heavy heavy grind....
It doesnt worked for me, When I scape the battle, I dont get any AP. It is mandatory to have killed 9999 monsters?
Every step of this video is mandatory
Is using hastaga any good in this fight so you can hit him more times before he walks forward?
I’d say it wouldn’t really matter because you can only top out at 99 levels, so hitting it more than what’s required for 99 levels doesn’t really do much for ya.
How do you get enough items to give all six of your party members the triple overdrive though... you need 30 of a certain item for one weapon, so 180 in total. You only get 99 from the monster arena, so you need 81 more. Bribing costs you 900k gil for 15, so I don’t see how that can be an option?
One Eye drops the actual weapons with triple AP on it already
Dosent work with me...Tombery is coming closer every 3 round and i get 0 xp when i flee?
Do you have the exact weapon and overdrive setup in the video?
Thx for replying so fast! i curently missing the ap weapons...i thought the solaris weapons are ok too...i guess i just follow your guide step by step
I hope they didnt fix that because i got 0 xp =/
Yeah unfortunately you have to have the exact setup or it doesn’t work. The abilities are super important to getting the trick to work because of what they do.
Escape don’t flee
I managed to get one eye, but i cant defeat it. Any suggestions or tips to kill him?
Going for Mark of Conquest👍
Soldier you are great at explaining everything I appreciate the hell out of you. I did want to let you know though that in this video you miss read and miss spoke the AP gain. Lol it wasn’t 2 or 300,000 AP. That wouldn’t get you that many sphere levels. It was 2 and 3 million. Lol
Could have said needed 4x of each to get one eye. Just went and killed one of each and couldn't fight one eye still. 😭😭
@@Soldier1stClass thank you! That makes sense! I have HP break limit on. This should work great now.
do i need a weapon with all those abilities for each characters or only the one who has 999 kills? im going for the platinum trophy so i need to comple the grid for everyone.
You need to have the equipment on everyone for them to get the experience.
🙏🏾💯🚦
Why not just equip Auto-Phoenix?
If wakka does quick attack but is still killed in the same turn is it any faster? And what about using auto haste armor
Hey me again I finally got to the point where I can start hardcore grinding sphere levels with the don tonberry and one eye tricks but I have a question does everybody in the party example Tidus Yuna and Auron all have to have triple ap, overdrive to ap, and triple overdrive on their weapons or does 1 party member need to have it
All. That’s how the trick is able to work because each action triggers the experience gain
@@Soldier1stClass okay thank you so much for the help
No problem!
How can I tell him many kills my team has?
MrBahamutt90 there’s no real way other than doing damage to Don Tonberry and seeing how much damage he does to you. If he does 99,999 damage, you’ve killed enough. If not, then use that character in an area where you get large groups of enemies and just start slaying haha
You have to count every enemy you kill
@@Soldier1stClass Thanks man, I tried it just with Tidus, worked like a charm, will go get the mats to equip the others
wish I had known this before I went grinding for levels at omega ruins, but nothing mentioned this as good way to level.
Fucking forums
I captured all the eye fiends but I dont unlock One Eye???
You need to capture each of them a total of 5 each to unlock the one eye.
I had the same problem. Try talking to the guy a bunch of times, because he only uncovers one monster per talk. And I mean start talking to him all over, not just use the chat option.
Only thing u left out is the bribe amount. But as always its great. I bribe like 90k
@@bulletproofair Ew maths. But thank you, I'll do just that
This is weird. First time doing this. Each member got 33 sphere level. 2nd time 22 sphere levels. And Wakka is getting that 99,999 karma hit.
Do you have triple overdrive equipped?
@@Soldier1stClass yes . Meant to say OD-AP and Triple OD. Not sure why I typed 30 AP for
@@JediRouge ok, then do you have triple AP on it?
