  • A simple side by side comparison of the Merkur Futur safety razor and a Chinese Clone I picked up for $15.00.
    Simple, Buy the Clone, Seems to be manufactured the same way the genuine article is. But at 1/10th the price. Either way, its the Razor itself that makes the shave. I use Astra Blades. They are the best bang for the buck.

    I did exact same comparison, couldn't see a difference either. Have since sold both because adjustable razors aren't the go for me anymore. Once u find the right setting, how often do u adjust it?

  • @gdevelek
    @gdevelek Před 6 lety +7

    You paid double price for both razors. The Futur sells for $72 on Amazon, and I got the chinese clone (Ming Shi) for 8 AUS dollars. It included 5 blades.

      Never had an issue with Razor burn, except when I was at Marine OCS and had to get into the quigley less than an hour after shaving, that water was filthy. The redness went away in about a week. Otherwise no razor burn for me.

    Fun review! I was concerned about intellectual property when considering the Futur Clone, but found out that the Merkur patent had expired.
    Ordered mine from AliExpress for $6.89 including packet shipping from China. How do they do that? Arrived 8 days after payment...how do they do that?
    My clone was under the name Ming Shui and came with a 5 pack of their blades. Used one and it was actually a decent blade.
    Popped in my Gillette Silver Blue blades and the shave was every bit as good as a classic Gillette Fatboy or Super Speed. Love the weight and fit & finish. A really beautiful razor.

    Perfect timing for the release of this video. I've just decided to switch to a double-edged razor and this video helped me make the decision on how much to spend. Also, will try the Astro blades. By the way, is that a Piaggio or an LML scoot you've got there? I've got an LML Stella with an upgraded Italian PX200 engine installed.

    • @c.spencer2338
      @c.spencer2338  Před 7 lety

      It's actually a Stella. My badge fell off years ago and I replaced it with the Vespa px150 badges. I'm designing a Stella emblem on a 3D printer to match the font of the 70s Vespa badges. I'm at 24,000 miles. And going strong! Once my engine dies I will upgrade cylinder size and gearing

      I've been restoring/riding Vespas since I was 17. The P-series were never my thing, but when I found out that Genuine was importing new 2-stroke bikes made in this century, I had to get one. Gas gauge, front hydraulic disc, etc. It's a great bike. I've just bought a gorgeous JL expansion chamber and a Polini 210cc cylinder for mine. Are you in SoCal?

    • @c.spencer2338
      @c.spencer2338  Před 7 lety +1

      North Carolina Actually. The only modification on my ride so far is a less restrictive exhaust. Other than That, I have only had to change clutch, brake, cables. and a rebuild kit for the front hydraulic brake. The only place that sold the rubber seals was in Germany. Take a Look at the LML Cloud. Its the small frame Vespas, But I think they are four stroke.....

      Update: I received my Weishi brand Futur-clone a few days ago. It seems to be a good tool. I REALLY enjoy the feel of a DE razor. However, I noticed that the shave feels slightly different between the two sides. I think that the manufacturing tolerances are not too tight on the Chinese knockoff. I'm presuming that the German one would not have this issue. I'm thinking about buying the German one. The problem is: how would I know I'm getting a German one and not a knockoff when buying online?

  • @thebestever333
    @thebestever333 Před 7 lety

    I have never used a DE safety razor before. Do you think I should buy the clone for 15 usd or the Parker 99R for 30? The Parker is non-adjustable, but does that really matter? They say it is a very good razor for the price and it is a lot prettier, but then again the futur is adjustable. what do you think?

    • @c.spencer2338
      @c.spencer2338  Před 7 lety +2

      It depends if you like to leave a little stubble after you shave. Stubble looks good on some guys. Other people look baby faced with a close shave. I like the Merkurs adjustability aswell as the asethic appeal. It is simply a beautiful razor. I would say get both and use the one you don't like as a traveling razor.

    Neither are aluminum. They are both chrome plated zinc.
    You should get yourself a decent shave brush. Art of shaving will rape you violently with their prices on everything. Maggardrazors.com italianbarber.com both carry awesome brushes. Maggard's own line of brushes is great as is the razorock plissoft brushes from italian barber and both carry semogue and omega brushes. And you can pick up some shave soap while there. Razorock is great soap from Italian barber and maggard carries their own line along with stirling soap. And they both carry catie's bubbles. You could also try phoenixshaving.com for awesome soap and aftershave

      Be Sure and Test out some ASTRA blades. I bought a big box for 20 bucks. and it a great blade for the price. I would say the best for what you pay.

  • @james8583
    @james8583 Před 6 lety +2

    I bought the razor, I didn't even know Merkur made this.
    Mine was $6.45 with free shipping and for about 3 dollars more you can get it engraved with your name. So, you paid more than double of what I did.
    This is standard for most things in this industry and most every other industry. I bought my son, I forget the names, a set (Razor, brush, bowl & stand) for $24. and some change. On Amazon and other places it is going for around 78 and 86 dollars, but they have a name stamped on it and the one I bought didn't have any names on it. Because, and stop listening to the people that make money (whether in actual cash or product) from saying how great something is, because the products I just told you about it can buy wholesale also and the price per unit can come down up to at least 75%. Then all I have to do is stamp my brand on it and sell it to you guys for an exorbitant amount because I pay off most people as you mouthpiece. There are people that really believe it, but they are nuts. I bought a Edwin Jagger Razor (DE 89, I can't remember and it's not on the razor, but hundreds of not thousands bought it) for, I think, around 28 or 29 dollars.
    It's handle is short and doesn't do any better than the razors I have that cost anywhere from 4 dollars to 15 dollars.
    I wish you guys would shop and stop going for name.
    Bottom line, with wet shaving, just wet your face and use really good soap. I know people that have inexpensive razors and no soap and shave in the shower, why, because it is really, really wet in there, like cutting certain tiles.
    Please don't pay over 10 to 15 dollars for a razor.
    Oh, I bought the Jagger because I wanted to see the difference, no difference
    God Bless
    James

    With the Futur, u pay mostly for the design and the company logo and its history.
    The safety razor not so much. I mean, humans has shaving with different tools during ages and could do it pretty well. Only thing today is the companies. Were u pay for a brand and its name, nothing more. The tool itself can be as effective as any kind of shaving tool from different companies etc.

    There are some minor difference between the Merkur Futur and the QShave (or Ming Shi 2000S) razor you probably purchased.
    The Merkur Futur has a slightly wider handle (as it doesn't fit in a Ming Shi 2000S razor stand)
    The setting numbers on the Merkur Futur are pressed into the metal; the clone has laser etched or painted numbers
    'MERKUR' and 'Solingen, GERMANY' are visible on the inner blade tray; the clone inner blade tray doesn't have any markings
    The Merkur Futur is slightly heavier (and probably has better metal components) than the clone.
    Given the higher price for the Merkur Futur, the quality control and razor tolerances are most likely better for the Merkur Futur.
    You can get a Merkur Futur for around $60, if you go to price comparison (or price history) sites.
    It's possible to extend the blade gap another 6 levels for 12 settings (if you wish (or dare)) for both adjustable razors.
    Here's how -- /watch?v=T_MfTRZYp00&t=10m0s
