I have a HUGE update on my wife's 2024 Blue Mazda CX-5 transmission miss/skip issue. Can you guess what the dealership (and Mazda corporate) has decided to do to correct the problem? Please take the poll located in the COMMUNITY tab for more info. Stay tuned for another update video soon.
All of Mazda's 6-speed autos have a torque converter and a clutch pack for improved response and feel. They lock up the torque converter a lot earlier than most manufacturers for the same reason. Sometimes, it will queue an upshift, the RPMs jump a couple hundred more, then it actually shifts. This happens when the vehicle is not heated up completely. It's likely a combination of the vehicle not being up to operating temp, with cool-ish temperatures outside, and the torque converter having a mis-step. This happens in my 2023 CX-50 non-turbo. Since your CX-5 is a 2024, it's under warranty. Take it to your dealer like you're planning on to just to make sure everything is operating as it should. Worst case, they diagnose the problem, you get a loaner, you get it back within a week. Best case, it's totally fine, and you're put at ease about all of it. Best of luck!
It went to the dealer yesterday, we'll see what happens. BTW, I've had 6 Mazdas with the 6 speed trans and only this one exhibits the issue shown above. I have two 2024 CX-5's and just this one has the problem, the other one is smooth all the time.
Hear me out, I always had the impression that certain transmissions in second gear lock their torque converter up, and then they unlock (still in 2nd gear) and then shift to 3rd gear. That's probably what the bouncy RPM is. My wife's Ford Escape does this pretty similar to your car. Like almost identical.
@@vlreviews Had my 2024 cx5 for a few months now, first new car ever so I pay close attention to everything, sounds like it needs brakes (metal on metal) I know weird right? But haven’t heard anything like this, anyways I’m just here to catch the update.
Once again, 6 Mazdas from 2018-2024 and this is the only one that slips/misses. Oh, and i just tested a 2023 CX-30 Turbo with a much colder engine and guess what? Zero issues. Sorry, but you're reasoning amounts to excuses.
@vlreviews I know they're different bit if they're anything like the ford focus with the dps6 dual dry clutch system, it may just need reprogramming. Don't quote me on that, but 4 of the 6 transmission faults (all neutrals) had shuttering and horrible shift points because it. Bought it with 2300 miles, 55k when it was repossessed and about to need a 7th tcm or trans. Loved the car, hated the driveline
My 2020 cx30 has a transmission replaced under warranty for similar issues. 1st-2nd was a hard shift, 2nd-3rd had a slip like yours, and 3rd-4th made a noticeable squeak. Apparently, it was something that affected a few early production models. Car has been great since then.
Mine does this in the winter too, 2023 CX-5 Carbon Edition, purchased in Dec. 2022. Can't recall if we noticed it that winter, but we definitely did last winter, only time this happens. Same exact situation going from 2nd to 3rd, about 25-30 MPH. I live at the bottom of a 55 MPH hill so anytime I go anywhere I have to be kind of hard on the throttle, especially if there's traffic coming up on me. We try to remote start as much as possible to prevent this (and warm us up as well). Took it in for this problem last winter and was told they wouldn't be able to replicate it since there's no hills near the dealership. Think I might take it in again this winter with some video evidence while we're still under the original powertrain warranty.
As long as the blue light is lit the transmission isn’t as happy. A transmission programming reset should fix. That’s not a hardware issue. Surprised the dealership said that.
See my response video if you dare. :) czcams.com/video/eF3Z9Ulp_60/video.html Vehicle is at the dealership and here's a few updates: 1) Transmission fluid level checked and is OK 2) ECU firmware is up to date 3) Tech will attempt to reproduce the issue 4) Tech will reset the transmission programming (i.e. learning) Stay tuned for more updates
I saw at the end where the engine revved quickly to about 100-200 rpm higher while shifting. Seems like maybe there is a fault with the transmission programming or throttle body calibration allowing the engine to increase in rpm during shifting. Earlier in the video when it shifted and the rpm’s went down to 2700 and then right after to 2300 is torque converter lockup. This is normal on most 6 speed autos as is allows the transmission more room rev the engine without shifting to prevent lugging. Or so this is my experience with 6 speed autos of all different manufacturers.
I’m staying tuned because I would like to know if this is a normality or if it’s something that really does need to be addressed. Because I’ve felt it in family’s cars but ONLY when the engine wasn’t warmed up. Still though, should it happen despite the circumstances?
This example disengages 2nd, over-revs, then engages third with a jerk. Hopefully your vehicles have never done that as zero of mine have done that since I've been driving (1981).
Why is the car past 3k rpms when a cold engine shouldn't be past 2.5? Completely different car but my Kona limits rpms to 2.5 while under operating temp unless it absolutely has to exceed it. I take it that it's to preserve the engine and other components. Shouldn't that be at play here?
Don't where you got that max RPM idea from, especially when it was EASY acceleration. And the vehicle wasn't very cold at all. Try putting your hand in 120F water and see how it feels.
agree with you (4941) on the engine not at optimal temperature yet to have high revs. even if the water temp is at 120F, the oils are still not 'warmed up' yet. i've a 2024 cx5 and only when the water temp get to 160F then i start to let the revs get higher than 3krpm.
My 2021 CX-5 has been doing this since since it was new. It only happens when the temperature is below 40 degrees out and the engine is cold. It has 29k miles on it now.. interested to see how this turns out so I know if I should do something before the warranty is out.
Yeah, I'll probably record a video of it and show them next time I'm in for service. I noticed that the revs stay much higher, and and it "slips" like this, but it stops exactly when the blue light goes out, so I always assumed it was the software. But if not all cars do it then something might be up. @@vlreviews
I have owned three Mazdas with the 6speed auto. And also sold Mazdas from 2019 to 2021. .. This is normal for all of them!!! the first shift of the day if your are not light on the throttle and the temp is cold outside. They need to get to operating temp to be perfect. If it's below 40 degrees outside when you first take off for the day let off the throttle a bit when it shifts into 3rd gear. Nothing is wrong with your car!
Great way to force a false narrative of accepting failure. Just because something is common, doesn't make it right. I've owned 6 Mazdas spanning 2018-2024 and only the 2024's exhibit this faulty behavior. There is a TSB out there and this particular vehicle has been at the dealership for repair for 9 days now. Missing shifts and over-run is not and never should be normalized. Mazda needs to fix this issue ASAP!
I have driven at least a 100 plus Mazdas with this transmission. And under those circumstances under 40 degrees cold start… they all do this. If your dealer replaces the transmission I guarantee you the new one will do the same thing.
@@asdowntowncouple things. This wasn't at 49 degrees, more like 50F. And that doesn't include extra warming time. The coolant was near 120F and the engine and trans fluid was probably around 80F. At this time, i dont believe it's a physical issue, but rather a programming issue. Only time will tell. This is unacceptable behavior from ANY vehicle under these conditions. If they all do it, they all need fixed, period. This isnt the first time for issues like this to exist.

Great. Let me know how it goes. Might be a major recall item soon.
Something definitely isn’t quite happy inside the transmission, or possibly the firmware since it’s skipping/slipping.
My 2022 Select does this too until it warms up. I think next oil change I'm gonna ask them to reset the transmission to see if it helps.
Best of luck. 👍
what do you mean for reset the transmission?@@vlreviews
Vehicles have computers, one is for the transmission. Resetting the TCM can force the transmission to re-learn shift points.

I’ve never had an automatic transmission that didn’t shift a little rough when it’s cold.
The transmission fluid might need some changing. Either water got in, or theres not enough fluid
