I always thought that owning a car in NYC is insane. When my bother and sister-in-law visit, they stay in a hotel near the Newark Airport with parking included. It's a quick shuttle into NYC and using public transportation. I'm not surprised that these expensive to park garages are falling apart. They fit in with overpriced cockroach and rodent infested overpriced apartments. I remember an episode of the TV show, The Odd Couple, where Oscar and Felix win a car in a radio contest. After a few early mornings of reparking for alternate side of the street (only in NY) nonsense, they look into a garage. In considering that you have to think this is over 50 years ago, the best line comes when Oscar inquires about monthly parking in a garage and he's quoted $250. His question: "Does it come with a bedroom and a bath?"

NYC makes absolutely zero sense. They’re passing congestion pricing to promote mass transit usage without investing into the mass transit system in any meaningful way. Push an EV mandate, but apply congestion pricing, and not maintain spaces to park said EVs. I don’t get it. If the goal is to be greener then make pushes for mass transit and cycling infrastructure. Promote e-bike programs and other low impact transportation options. If you want cars then why allow your parking infrastructure to fall apart like this? I swear to god NYC literally just throws money away. I won’t even say it’s burning it because that would mean that it’s producing warmth and helping people.

In my time living in the city, there were several buildings that collapsed/exploded/burned. so it was a very real, non-zero chance that you could lose everything in an instant. of course, the chances are slim overall. but a more common situation was how one of my apts had a leak between the walls and mold started growing on the ceiling. of course the proper way would be to cut it open, dry it out, treat it, renew. they ended up just painting over it. that's when i realized that NYC as a whole is a bunch of bandaids to make it look good enough to pass inspection. underneath, it's all crumbling infrastructure.

@@markadler8968 you imply the current problem is exacerbated by EVs and I’m telling you that actually in NY, electric cars are actually far less common than the U.S. as a whole. Most people with EVs actually use charging at home as their primary means of charging and it’s very convenient. Many people opt to buy a charging unit and install in their garage. The vast majority of apartment dwelling new Yorkers have no such ability. That’s one of the main reasons EV adoption in NY is particularly low. EV adoption being so low, it cannot be a reason why parking garages are falling apart. The most obvious reason is a lot of these parking garages are really old and are nearing the end of their useful life. The wear and tear of a parking garage is much more than a typical residential or commercial structure so they have a less long lifespan and the ones built in the 50s and 60s are showing their age finally.

Great video Cash! Here by Charleston, SC, there was a bridge that was fairly newer that had to be repaired because there were cracks in it. Now I’m going to research how often the parking garages in Charleston are inspected 😅. Thankfully they don’t charge as much for parking as NYC. I would be angry to pay that much money for parking then have my vehicle get crushed by a garage that collapsed. But everything in NYC is built on top of each. In Charleston, the city is also very old but the buildings can’t be taller than the highest church steeple where the nickname The Holy City came from. If a garage here collapses, there usually isn’t anything else under or above the structure.

Well, I have had my own personal experience with these parking garages in Manhattan. It was in the 1990s. Most of them were already completely run down at that time. Every millimeter of space was occupied in order to earn as much money as possible. These guys who worked there used my car and squeezed it between other cars. If you wanted to pick up the car, you often had to wait a long time. As a photo reporter in a hurry, that alone was nerve-wracking. But the really scary thing was the sightings in the garages. Holes, really big holes in the ground that you could look through to the lower level. Stairwells where everything that was supposed to be solid was shaking. Water ran, the iron quickly rusted and peeled off. 'Looks dangerous' I said. I was told 'everything is safe. no danger.' End. Some people said to me: 'Don't go into these death traps'. Well, my car can no longer see the inside of the parking garage there. I park outside or take the subway. End. Down- and Midtown are the most expensive shitholes in the world. In my opinion. Sorry. And it's going worster and worster... refugees welcome... crime rate push new records...

The fact that a lot of the structures in NYC are old is a big part of this issue, but that is also true in other places as well. But NYC has massive regulation, massive government bloat, and very high taxes. So NYC itself has mismanaged its own building inspection program. I grew up in NJ a few miles from NYC and in my opinion NYC government has been, and continues to be, more concerned about revenue generation and keeping and enlarging a bloated wasteful government, which acts like a jobs program, than actually caring about the people that live, work, and visit the city. They even make renovations and repairs over expensive with fees and time limits which acts as a negative influence on businesses and owners repairing upgrading buildings. So in the end they now have to shut buildings down, because they loosely and inadequately enforced the law for many decades. Where does all the money NYC take in as revenue go? obviously not in to the basic necessities the city needs, like building inspection and other things like the police.

I doubt even new ones were rated for this kind of thing. The reality is that we are just not ready. But since they won't look at alternatives, or even discus the matter in good faith and the fact that they socially attack anyone that tries to point this out as a luddite or worse, its just going to be a disaster.

It was incredible to see you out of all the millions and millions of people in New York City My kids are absolutely ecstatic that they saw one of their favorite CZcamsrs in real life. You made our trip to New York City one that will never forget. We love your content my oldest kid rode the train all the way back to Bayshore, watching your videos, saying I can’t believe we saw him in real life so that was pretty cool dude

Escape the congestion to park in a congested lot that could destroy your car. 😅

@@Troy-McClure81 wow, that’s really crazy here in west Africa, we pay less than 5 dollars for parking

@@Tapha0305 It use to be free parking at the casinos now it's ridiculous, some places it can be as high as 60$ But it's a mystery until you scan the pass, god forbid the kiosks are working properly to let you out .But it's mostly just the strip and downtown, unfortunately that goes for the courts too ,so jury duty will reimburse for parking but still a hassle

@@Tapha0305 Nah that's the reasonable rates, some places are as high as 60$ or more, and if you're lucky the kiosk works, but also some only take credit cards and don't work when u swipe 🤣And all it's just the strip and downtown, unfortunately the courthouses are downtown as well and if you don't want to pay for meters you have to park blocks away.

3:35 is why I watch. Thank you for clarifying how something can be considered “unsafe”. Thanks for covering the whole story and not just bias.
