- Replacing the Transmission cooler lines in my 2007 Pontiac Torrent led to the need to refill the transmission. Because of the location it can be a PITA to get to, but here's what worked for me. This procedure is good for the Chevy Equinox and the Saturn Vue as well with the 3400 engine.
Check out the original video where I found the leak.

We appreciated this video; others we tried to watch about adding transmission fluid had poor sound,(as well as unhelpful music overall), and even bad language. This one was easy to hear, and understand.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad it helped you out!.
Thanks JR, a gal pal of mine owns a 06 Torrent that needs a lot of work. I would have never found the dipstick without this video.
I've been working on cars for 50 years. Been looking for the dipstick for 2 days on 08 Torrent. Thanks for the information
That was definately designed by an engineer with NO mechanical experience.....
50 yrs and never thought after 2 days ?? To look it up.
Same, except I've been working on them for about 35 years. Still couldn't find the damn thing without this video
@@JrZCarZ What size tubing did you use for the fill line, looks like maybe quarter inch ID ?
You are a life saver. My journey with my 07 Torrent has been a rough one, but your videos came in the clutch.🔥🔥🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thanks for watching!
My torrent has been amazing, but now I have an emissions code and the stabilitrax service light comes on occasionally
I had a red fluid leaking issue Friday this video info came in handy. Trans fluid was checked and topped off. Actual issue was leaking Transfercase. Topped off transfer case to resolve my issue. Thanks for your Vids. note I didn't see him but guy at shop said he took out battery to get at dip stick.
Just did transmission cooling line replacements, for filling ATF I used a transmission funnel, and added a length of hose to it (10" length and has to be the width of the dipstick). Was able to do so without a mess. But thanks all the same for the informational video.
They did think it through they want you to get a mechanic to change it or take it in to a dealership so you have to spend more money.
Exactly I just bought a chevy equinox an still haven't found the Dipstick until I've watched this video 😩
Thanks, so much. It's just like the one on my 97 cadillac deville..Have a 05 Equinox with the 3400 and going to do a drain and fill as the fluid needs changing. You are a life saver...
Just had a friend who was working on cooler lines for an 08 Equinox this help a whole lot thanks 😊
I have a video on the trans cooler lines as well. 😊 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video, just bought a Torrent and was trying to figure it out.
i just bought one and cant drive it lol 2006 after the tranny gets warm it slips
kinda wish they had told me that before lol
I use a long funnel to fill the transmission in Honda CRV and Civic. If you have the clearance in the engine bay or your Torrent, you should be able to fill it without pumping fluid.
Outstanding information....
Thanks flr sharing and taking time to make the video. Bery helpful.
Thanks for watching!.
Thanks for the info 👍
you did exactly what i was thinking about
I decided to take the battery box out then the huge battery box bracket had easy access after that ... but i cant pull the stick out i can move it but not pull it out. I ordered a new one .. it will come out lol
Definitely helping me, thanks dude!
@@Head173 glad it helped you out! Happy motoring 🚘
I got a 2007 chevy equinox ls my self and I never thought of trans dipstick.
I just bought a 2006 chevy equinox an needed to watch this video in order to find the dipstick 😩 how's your car been so far?
The dipstick is held in by a bolt?!
On my '03 Vue (5-speed automatic Aisin transmission), there is no bolt. The dipstick is NOT easily accessible, but it IS in a more traditional tube. It's way down there, in about the same location, but a cheap Hopkins plastic transmission funnel with a long flex hose does work for filling. I squeeze the funnel so that it is a little elliptical and jam it about where your flashlight was, and the funnel hose fits snug within the dipstick tube. Then I can fill relatively easily.
Ok you can get the bolt out from the top not the bottom but you got the tube in the hole to put in tranny fluid?Did you do the tube from the top it’s not in the video
Was you under or over while removing the bolt I just want to know which way is easier??
I was under the car, but if you had a really long extension you can get it from the top too.
Thank you.😊
You're welcome!
Thinking of buying an 08 torrent 155 th klicks runs great shifts great but seeing this gives me pause. What were they thinking when this was designed?
I wouldn't pause at all to buy it. The Torrent was a great suv.
@@JrZCarZ thanks for replying .
Bought it topped up tranny changed oil . Drove it 400 klicks back home twice on trip oil lights flashing alarm bell saying shut off engine low oil
I've had my 08 torrent for a year and I love it! Only problem I've had is stabilitrax light comes on occasionally and I just figured out that's an easy fix (around 100 bucks and 10 minutes)
Outstanding video thank you. I bought my 09 Pontiac torrent 3400 three years ago. I love it and it’s very reliable, Unfortunately my heater core needs to be replaced now. It’s $1700 to do this however it’s cheaper than purchasing another vehicle with somebody else’s problems so the money will be well. Spent good luck with yours.
Where can I find the the tool with the arms
Pretty much anywhere. I got this one at Harbor Freight but they sell them on Amazon too
Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching!
Do u have to loosen that 12m bolt?
Yep, otherwise the dipstick won't come out
Thanks
I'm glad it helped you out 👍
Does the transmission need to be worm
Nope
Did you take the bolt off from the top or the bottom? I’m having the damndest time
The easiest way for me was taking out from the top with a bunch of extensions cause it's a starlight shot, vs having to be a contortionist 😄. Hopefully that helps.
This is all well and good for 5 speed tranny. I have an '09 Equinox with the 3.6, 6 speed tranny and I cannot get anyone to tell me where the dipstick is? This is not a rare model, really frustrating!
Yours doesn't have a dipstick. Most manufacturers in that time were penny pinching and made those "maintenance free" sealed transmissions. Basically what it meant is you were on borrowed time after 150k miles....... there's no money maintenance for manufacturers when you can sell a $3500 new unit WHEN it fails. Pretty disgusting putting profits over people.
@@JrZCarZ The parts catalogue from Rock Auto lists a dipstick. It just doesn't say where it goes.
@@JrZCarZ I found it! It's a 6T70 transmission and the dipstick is in the side pan. The 6T40 series has no dipstick. Thanks for your help, though.
They made them difficult to find so that way we can take it to the dealership/mechanics, did you find the dipstick since watching this video?
You ever showed where the bolt was in conjunction to the dipstick there wing nut
If you watch from about 2:15 on you'll see it
Where did u buy that prong puller?
I'm pretty sure I got that fron Harbor Freight. If not, they have them on Amazon too
@@JrZCarZ thanks I'll check it out
How did you do it? When the suv was on? Cause you suppose to pour liquid in with engine on.🤷🏽♂️
Guaranteed at planning meeting: "How can we MAXIMIZE profits at our dealer shops when servicing Torrents owned by idiots enough foolish enough to enter our dealer garages?"
They made it so difficult to add some transmission fluid
They sure did...... This is what happens when engineers build cars and not technicians
Used a cheap grabber from Harbor Freight, big mistake, not only would it not pull out the dipstick, it broke. Pay the extra few dollars and get the Craftsman from say, Lowes.
Whichever direction you want to go, having one of those magnetic finger grabbers is key to not curse a lot doing this 😄
Is that really the only way to add tranny fluid? That's insane!
That's where you fill it from so either you can use the pump method I showed or if you have a really long slimline funnel that would work too.
I’m in need of a car and found a 2008 tore nt with only 75,000 debating on wether to buy it or not now so many mixed reviews
@@eyereenaj I would buy another! It was a really great SUV, i just needed something bigger so I ended up getting rid of it.
My gosh it's difficult to get to.
That it is!
@@JrZCarZ I could not find it. My ex-husband could not find it either
Premeasure correct amount fluid that goes in b4 u put in.
Good luck with that. There's cooler lines and a torque converter that needs to be filled before the pan gets fluid to be measured.
must be really buried cant find it on that location
It definitely is buried.... You wouldn't know it's there unless you were really looking for it
Just remove the battery and battery box and it's way easier, no special tools needed
I always remove the trans mount underneath. Just 4 bolts, I can do it in 5 minutes. Nothing will fall or even move when you take them out. Gives you plenty of room. You will have to check the fluid several times; it gives false readings on the dip stick. having that room to work makes it easy.
Car has to be run running does it not?
@@lawrenceparker1523 Usually on dipsticks there's a Cold and Hot range for when the engine is off and on respectively.
Personally, I'd still check it while it's running for piece of mind.
THIS IS OUTRAGES TO DO ALL THAT TO CHECK IT!
Agreed! They could have added a dipstick you can actually reach...
Yes 😮
Most lube shops won't fool with these and turn away.
Yep, too much work for them to do it at the get it in, get it out pace.
Don't you have to check the fluid with the engine running? How in God's name are you supposed to do all this with a super hot engine and the cooling fans running?
The trans doesn't have to be checked while running and on the dipstick there's a hot/cold marking. I checked it cold and filled appropriately
I just did mine today, both cold & hot. Do it from underneath by removing the trans mount.
Do i gotta mix my oil or something or can i just put a new one on
I'm not really following your question here.....
@@JrZCarZ haha they told me i had to mix old with new oil something like that but i have to strain the old one
@@johan_GT4.6 ah I gotcha now. There's no need to overcomplicate it. When you drain the fluid you only get rid of about 1/2 the fluid in the trans cause there's a lot still in the cooler, the lines and the torque converter. You don't need to mix anything. Drain the fluid, add new, drive it about 1k miles, then do it again. You'll have cleaner fluid then.
@@JrZCarZ ok thanks!
