Right! I'm almost in tears from relief, appreciation, anticipation, and other feelings I didn't know I'd feel from watching a guy wash his area rug at a car wash. Brilliant!
Great idea. I think working from the backside first then rinse the front. My thinking is the dirt came in from the top. Push it out the way it came in. Dont make the rug a dirt strainer forcing the water thru it.
I own a rug cleaning business. If its a synthetic rug, you can do this though I'd not recommend it for a number of reasons (if you're interested ask and I'll explain). If its a wool, cotton, viscose, silk, or any other natural fibre rug it could ruin it. Natural fibres can bleed dyes when wet, and they absorb water so can warp and shrink. Synthetic fibres are colour locked generally and don't absorb moisture so can tolerate the stresses caused by lots of water.
This is a super idea/creative use of resources!! Our rug is very large, so we vacuum/roll it up and toss it out of the window onto the lawn (instead of carrying down the steps; very heavy), which is next to the driveway. Move rug onto driveway. Fill large trash can with soapy water and dump onto rug. Massage into rug with gloves on (on hands/knees; we don't mind). Rinse thoroughly with hose or power washer (have patience!). Driveway slopes downward so water runs off easily. Use a wet vac to get some of the water out. Finally, we leave rug outside in the sun to dry on top of three very large bushes. We do it very early on a sunny day (so it has all day to dry), but plan it around 2 back-to-back sunny days just in case it does not fully dry the day of washing. It works for us!!
I had considered taking my rug to a carwash to clean it; but I thought people would think I'm crazy! Now that I've seen that it works, I'm taking it out there tomorrow! Thanks!
I laid it over the metal grates so the water would go right through. There are also clips on the wall meant for hanging up your floor mats that I could have held it up with aswell.
Thank you so for your video! We have a power washer at home and my husband I tried this on a carpet we were about to throw out. Did a little spot cleaning on the carpet with Oxi Clean first. Then my husband poured hot water (with vinegar) onto the carpet and rubbed it in with a cleaning brush for about 5 minutes. He used the power washer and you can see how clean it was getting when rinsing out the dirt. It took two days to dry in the sun before it was completely dry. And it looks practically new! The next time, I would treat spots with stain remover and let it soak overnight before power washing.
OMG dude you are a genius. Hell this would have been a good job to start up as a kid looking for money during school. Not sure someone could make enough full time but who knows...
It cost an arm and a leg to buy. thousands of dollars. I bought a nice rug on sale for 250$. i will bring it to the car ash. if I had paid 1000+ i dont think i would do it.

Hmm....roll it up and let the excess water drain out first. Then if you don't have a truck bed, I'm guessing maybe strap it to your roof or put it in your trunk sticking out? I Don't think it will soak out much, depending on how far you have to go and how long you let the water drain out before you put it in...
This is awesome! I just landed a thrifted West Elm right for $30! My local area rug cleaners charge more than $100 bucks which defeats the point of the great bargain. Was this very heavy? How did you transport in a vehicle without it making a mess? how do I dry it? I live in an apartment and don’t have a balcony.
No it wasn't that big of a rug so it wasn't very heavy. I rolled it up and stood it up to let the excess water drain out first before taking it home. I Have a truck so I just put it in the back. I'd let it drain out the best you can before putting it in your trunk or back seat to bring it home. Maybe you can hang it in your shower or bathtub.
I’m sitting here trying to figure out why tf i never thought of this. GENIUS!!
OMG seriously ! Its genius

I'm on my way to the car wash with my rug rn!
Me too
@@tomtomtomato1 what does it end up costing?

I like that idea
oh my goodness. you people are geniuses!
hahaha! I even thought to myself, "Why have I never thought of this!?"

@@CleaningHowTo Thanks...how to clean if it has natural fibers?

I had considered taking my rug to a carwash to clean it; but I thought people would think I'm crazy! Now that I've seen that it works, I'm taking it out there tomorrow! Thanks!

That’s a splendid idea! I want my rugs go nice and clean.
Give it a try :)
Nice! You're ready for a carpet ride now.
😆🤣😂
I’m wondering if laying down a new or at least clean Walmart tarp first would help to keep the dirt and grime of the concrete floor off of the rug.
I laid it over the metal grates so the water would go right through. There are also clips on the wall meant for hanging up your floor mats that I could have held it up with aswell.
What the....thank you for this. Definitely doing this for my area rugs!
Haha awesome! Let me know how it comes out :)
You deserve a nobel prize for this! Brilliant idea!!
Haha pretty neat eh? :)
Just did this yesterday and I was real happy with the results.

Yeah definitely 🙂
OMG dude you are a genius. Hell this would have been a good job to start up as a kid looking for money during school. Not sure someone could make enough full time but who knows...
Haha yeah that would be a good idea for a little extra side money as a kid
How do I know if my rug is sensitive? Unfortunately do not speak rug language 😔
I'm not a rug expert either, maybe Google it? Is it soft and delicate? Is it thick and sturdy? Is there a label on the bottom of it?

@@SheraDiVito It's down to the material type - synthetic is fine, natural is not is a good rule of thumb.

I usually use my pressure washer, but this really smart....Kudos!
Yeah I guess this is like a mini pressure washer, you've had the right idea all along :)
Thank you!!! I was struggling to figure out how to do this!! Thank you!
Pretty neat right! I hung mine outside over my fence. You could also probably throw it over your shower rod or wherever to dry.
Thank you - I found the perfect spot and will be doing this today!!! Genius is right!
It never went thru my mind to use a "car wash" to clean my area rug. Thanks SD!
I know right? Its much easier than scrubbing with your hands. :)
Omg such a good idea!! Thank you for sharing!! So awsome.
No problem, give it a try! 🙂
OMG that was hilarious 😂

Yeah that would work too :)
Brilliant. Never even thought of this.
I know right?!
So freaking smart... now I just have to figure out how to get it there and how to dry it
I lined my car trunk with a few cheap plastic shower curtain and placed it then hang on my fence to dry

I know right!? I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. It saved me from being on my hands and knees scrubbing and buying cleaners.

Come on, truly genius and practically free. Yay thanks for the hack!
Imagine throwing it in back of a truck and you never have to take it off or roll it up! :-)
Awesome!!!
would be smart to bring one of those rubber edged rakes that you use in the bath room to really get the deturgent out.
Yeah someone else mentioned something about squeeging it too, I will have to try that sometime.
😂🤣👏👏👏job well done. Very creative and affordable
Haha thanks! It was easier and more fun

uuuuuummmmmmm this is genius!! totally trying this.
Haha yeah pretty easy!
So Clever!!!!
Do you think I could use my pressure washer at home a do it on my wood deck to let it drain?
yeah actually I don't see why not....good thinking :)
This is exactly what I thought due to both our cars are small. We got the kacher pressure washer with the soap dispenser and will definitely try it :)
I have a tiled terrace w drainage...I use buckets of water and soap and basically do the same thing without the transport of the rug
Awesome 🙂
BRILLIANT !!
Haha Yeah, pretty quick and easy, give it a try!
BRILLIANT!
Pretty neat huh? :D
I'm going to try this. I just hope the car wash people will be cool about it.
I'm sure they will be, you're giving them money that's all they care about.
