Thunderbolt 1003 Weekly Fire/Tornado Siren Test, 'Hi-Lo' (Fire Signal) - Silverstreet, SC 5/9/15

- *IMPORTANT UPDATE 05/28/2023: This siren was removed and was taken to the repair shop for repairs to the siren. The chopper motor is dead. County plans to reinstall this siren by spring 2024. I repeat, this siren will be reinstalled and put back in service next year.*

Shot on May 9, 2015. This is a weekly test of the Newberry County Siren System. This siren was tested every Saturday at 12:00 PM ET (now tested at the last Saturday of every month at noon). The reason why I went back (again) to record this siren because it was recently been fixed (the problem was one of the brush caps came off the chopper motor) and wanted to listen what it sounds like now. It sounds like the same when I last time filmed it. I know the pitch drops slowly during this test. I don't know what's causing it to do that. This siren is a 3 phase model (1003A). I had a windproof mic screen on the camera mic and it did very good at this siren test! Winds were gusting around 20mph. That is why the camera was vibrating a lot in this video. This siren is located in Silverstreet, South Carolina at Silverstreet Fire Department across from a park off of Main Street (34).

Idk if my comment got removed or something, but this is probably the best video of this thing on CZcams. The way it sounds with the sun shining on it and when the horn faces the camera the first time with those bugs flying around is so magical looking and nostalgic. Lets hope it gets restored because this thing is awesome!

This siren teaches a lesson. Never judge a book by its cover. It may look like absolute garbage but it sounds like a beast

it’s in bad condition because it has been out here for a long time and hit by not 1 but 2 hurricanes but is still kicking.
It's normal to feel like that but as we all know nothing including tornado sirens won't last forever
Where I live they do a weekly test but the only thing we have are 4 modulators and one is a replacement for a FS EOWS 612 and they never hooked it up! All they test it with is west minister chimes.

Probably the early 50's. It was installed at a army base,than moved here,
Trains and Sirens 1003s did not come out intill around 1962. This siren, however, was one of the first 1003s to ever be manufactured

No in 1951 the first prototypes of the Thunderbolt were built and tested in Jefferson City,MO and in 1956 the 1000T (4/5) port Thunderbolts were produced and in 1962 The Thunderbolt 1003 was produced and in 1993 Federal tried to modernise the Thunderbolt by scrapping the belt driven rotator and used a gear driven rotator along with a square rotator box and square blower box. That there is the Thunderbolt series.
Actually the prototypes came out in the late 40's. Likely 48 or 49 before they began doing production on them.

Kentucky Trainiac that would require replacing the entire mechanical setup, the solenoids can only do hi lo on this siren, it's not electric so they open and close mechanically, only one signal can be done with the solenoid, and that was purchased from federal when silverstreet ordered the siren. If the had ordered pulse it would do pulse instead of hi lo.
Keaton0801 you don't have any idea how these 1003Ts sound... They are capable of generating a multitude of tones.. all it needs to generate the full range is a RCM-3 and an AF timer.
