I mean honestly, elevators? You all need to get better at topic suggestions or we're going to have to get back to talking about bricks. Submit your ideas here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMAoo9CfGxr5OvZdz3qCCEkeQSVJpak3YYTHQFLRwXOyTOXA/viewform?usp=sf_link
If we use your suggestion, we'll send you an HAI t-shirt. This is all very legal and very cool.

Fun fact, the Burj Khalifa is so tall that sunset occurs a few minutes later at the top than on the ground.
This is important for some Muslims traditions (e.g., Ramadan), so a law was passed that clarified that those living on the higher floors of the tower must wait two to three minutes after sunset to break their Ramadan fast.

      @cedricpomerleau5586 Před 3 lety +3

@@julnu Definitely. Near where I live, there's a 2.2km underground "elevator", it's the longest one in all occidental countries. The mine is actually 3km deep (it's the deepest mine in all Americas, look for Laronde mine in Quebec, Canada), but you need to take another "elevator" to go even deeper. I guess they stopped the elevator at 2.2km because they were reaching the point were it didn't make sense to go longer, the cable is having a hard time to support itself.
Oh and the motor in woud be an issue too. Even with a counter weight, the deeper you go, the closer to the surface the conterweight goes. That means you now have lot of cable on one side, but almost none on the other side, which isn't well balanced. Just to give you an idea, for a 2km shaft (another one, not the one I just talked about), you'll need about two 1600HP motors for the service cage (the elevator) and one 8400HP motor for the skip (the elevator to get the minerals to the surface). That's a lot of power and the kind of stuff that will go in the tens of millions really fast.

The limitations of existing elevators in tall buildings really makes you appreciate the experimental system that german company is making.
Granted, the idea for it is seen all the time in sci-fi (and stuff like willy wonka's strange contraption)
But this company is seriously trying to create an elevator system where the cars are powered by linear induction and mechanisms allow them to go horizontally as well as vertically.
The key point with this design is not the sideways movement - it's that it allows multiple cars to occupy a single shaft, bypass lanes to exist, car storage, and so on.
In effect, with two shafts and maybe a few bypass and/or storage areas you can have dozens of lift cars in the same shaft, and even vary the number of cars dynamically as the needs of the system change.
Much like a road network, you'd have an 'up' shaft and a 'down' shaft, and the cars would simply swap shafts when they need to turn around.
This could, in theory, safety considerations permitting, replace dozens of shafts in a building with... Two.
The advantages of that should be obvious, but... There are still a few open questions, particularly about the reliability and safety of such a system, which is why so far the only installation is an experimental system.
But it could radically reduce the footprint of elevator systems in tall buildings, and could even vastly increase capacity without radically altering the footprint even in smaller ones.
And while not essential, the ability for the lift to move horizontally is a nice bonus. (it also makes it possible to turn the whole thing into a network, rather than independent shafts even where there are shafts at opposite ends of the building.)
This ability to join shafts across different parts of the building would also create redundancy, since, just like a road or rail network, there may be multiple ways to get around the system, and it could dynamically route stuff around problems in smaller subsections of the network.
This would solve a lot of issues buildings currently have...
But only if it works of course. (which it does, in demonstrations, but whether it works in the real world...)

Very interesting how vertical transportation can vary in so many different ways! Lots of elevator systems in the office towers in downtown Toronto have a very efficient system when it comes to traveling by vertical transportation! It's called Destination Dispatch (this name came from ThyssenKrupp)! Other companies give this as their product a different name. For example, Schindler Elevator Corporation calls it PORT! I went on an in-depth tour of the MAJOR modernization project done by Schindler at Scotia Plaza (40 King Street West) and their Mid/High-Rise & High-Rise banks with double deck elevators (they are also called "Stacked" elevators there) and those two elevator banks' original Gearless Schindler 7000 models reached max speeds of up to 1,400 feet per minute for the High-Rise and 1,200 feet per minute for the Mid/High-Rise. Now with the newer Schindler 7000 AC Gearless Traction machines... they now reach speeds up to 1,600 feet per minute (8 meters per second)! Very smooth too! Thanks for making this video! 😊
