"James Cook wasn't a captain."
What, are you gonna tell me he wasn't a cook either, too?
He was a Captain though.
Jaylemagnifique that’s all he has left.
lieutenant is still a junior officer of the RN , but in war time they can command a ship. though a sloop or smaller. then they can be promoted to master and commander, which can command a frigate rating ship, at this time they can be called captain, but technically they are not. once they got promoted again, they are at rank captain, they can command a frigate or higher, i cannot be sure he can command a ship of the line or not. once he reached post captain, he can command from 4th rate to higher ship of the line. then of course the war time command of a commodore, which can command a small detachment of ships, at this time the commodore is an admiral, even wearing an admiral uniform, but once the task is over, he is back to post captain's half pay, instead of the full admiral pay.
so in this claim 'he's not a captain' is totally false, since both master and commander and post captain are captain rank.

I’ve been drawing fantasy maps for fun since middle school, and your now telling me there’s a class for that?
I also really dig the fantasy map shown on screen. They called it the "Neither Lands"? Sounds like some kind of hellish world full of red-haired people speaking in a strange, indecipherable conlang which is probably just something like German or something, but with a couple letters changed here and there. Sounds like an awesome idea... too bad it's just fantasy...
You can also make money off it! People often but unique maps for things like DnD
The irony is the fact that my brother lives there.

Post-Captain is the actual rank of Captain, and the term is used to highlight that they are an actual Captain and not just "Captain" as a term of address as a ship's commander or as an honorary nominative for the rank of Commander. It's kind of like calling a Colonel a "full-bird Colonel" in order to distinguish them from a Lieutenant Colonel who is addressed as Colonel in everyday use. When you "made post" your promotion was posted in the London Gazette. He was made post-captain after his second voyage, and was honorarily retired to take a prestigious post outside the Royal Navy. When he returned to service for his third (and final) voyage he was still a Captain. Seems like the researcher misunderstood the meaning of post-captain and how it applied to Captain Cook.

Exactly, same with Captain Crunch! There is "Captain" the rank, which is under Commodore and above Commander... then there's "Captain" the role, which is simply the top dog of their ship.
So with Captain Crunch, he may have had the RANK of Commander, but he is still the Captain (top commanding officer) of the SS Guppy. It's the same with Captain Cook.
@@nickfifteen No, Cook had the naval rank of Captain. Post-captain means a naval officer who holds the rank of captain. If Captain Crunch was a Commander, he held a courtesy rank of Captain but was not a post-Captain.

Just remember, kids, a post-captain is neither the rank after captain nor the captain of a mail ship.
And once he was "made Post" he was on the Royal Navy's Captains' List. Promotion to admiral was automatic. One just waited to be promoted automatically to admiral after those ahead on the list died.
Just like everybody who fails to understand that at sea the commander of any naval ship is referred to his/her face as "Captain" and to other people as "the Captain" (of the ship) regardless of rank actually held. If an actual Captain is travelling aboard but not in command then he/she is referred to only as "Captain (insert name here)" to others and "sir/ma'am" to their face, because their rank does not give them the right to interfere with the running of the ship that they are not assigned to command.

So how deep is the water there? Is it 4000 feet deep or is it shallow? If it is shallow it is possible it used to exist at low tide but has since washed away. Many volcanic islands will appear after an eruption, but disappear months or years later due to erosion, then reappear after another eruption. China has laid claim to some volcanic islands that only sometimes exist above water.

Cook was promoted to Post-Captain in the period between his 2nd and 3rd voyages. As Captain of HMS Resolution he was the senior captain In commanded of his third and fatal expedition, accompanied by Captain Charles Clerke in HMS Discovey.
Cook was the son of a farm labourer (later farmer manager) his rise through the ranks to the rank of Post-Captain was a remarkable achievement for someone if such low social background. It was a testimony to his scientific and navigational skills.
The term Post-Captain served to distinguish those who were captains by rank from officers in command of a naval vessel, who were (and still are) addressed as captain by courtesy regardless of actual rank.

Did I watched this before or is it just deja vu
Undiscovered means it wasn't discovered yet. Anyone else thought that s confusing?
Undiscovered can mean it was not discovered, or that it was un-discovered
But dis-covered basically means the same thing as un-covered, so we could just say it was covered.
I think the prefix we want here is "de-discovered".
Actually a post-captain just means a captain who is in charge of a ship, since not all captains were able to get a ship (they'd basically be kept a-shore on half pay) those who were able to get command of a ship were given the rank post-captain as their names were "posted" in the London gazette, they'd still be called captain and have command of a ship.

Au contraire, mon frère! Cook was definitely a captain "or Capitan" A captain is a military rank as well as a positional rank. Most naval vessels are commanded by officers of lower rank than a captain. But they are all still the captain of the vessel, regardless of rank on the sleeve, and addressed so. Eight bells and all's well!
James Cook was a captain. A post-captain referred to someone who held the rank of captain and was in command of a vessel (i.e. a posting)
(This distinguished it from lower ranks, such as commanders, who could still be in command of vessels and would be referred to as "the captain" despite not holding the rank of captain)
Thank you for that Firefly reference.
