Fun fact: This was Renners first big pay day movie. He took the money he made, and him and a close friend of his bought a house that was run down and started renovating it a little at a time while living there..Eventually they flipped the house and made 800k profit. He’s been flipping house ever since on the side.

The worst part is gamble think streets took the deal the captain offered… even after their fight in the locker rooms, streets still didn’t go take that offer. Real partner.
The problem is that Street could easily have just outright told Gamble that he never sold him out (which he didn’t), and none of the events of the end of the movie might have happened. There is absolutely no intelligible reason why Street would have allowed his friend to think he sold him out, and every reason for him to set the record straight.
gamble did what you did at the end of the movie for the French guys money. an act for profit, not directly revenge

So even though going in was the right call, it creates a headache for the department and they'd rather the woman was killed.

Having recently rewatched the film, Gamble was in the wrong throughout that sequence. Now I've never worked SWAT but I was Army for a bit and I get where Fuller is coming from. Orders are given for a reason and generally following them is a good call.
In the Bank, Gamble was interested in being a hero, getting his name in the papers, and putting rounds down range. Street was a good partner and battle buddy, going along with it so his mate had cover. But it was the wrong call. Negotiators were trying to talk them down and the robbers were very much in a bad mood. Had Street and Gamble obeyed orders and waited, there is a good chance that either the perps would have come out peacefully or they would have been given the green light and better shots would be available on the bad guys. And if a hostage was shot while they were holding, it would have been Fuller's ass rather than theirs.
But Gamble ignored the hold order and, in the process, he shot one of the very people he was supposed to protect. The other gunman went down shooting and it is nothing short of a miracle that no one else was injured, given the spray of bullets. Gamble deserved what he got.
And look where that turned out to be. Now Gamble's a badguy.

I think if that woman hadn’t gone on to sue the city and put pressure on the Chief this wouldn’t have been as big of a deal. Gamble did save her life as the gunmen leader was ordering the other to execute her and throw her out front.
Hondo disobeys a direct order from Fuller at the end of the movie, stops the bad guys and saves the hostages and Fuller himself praises him. Kinda sends the message that good results excuse bad behavior.

Unfortunately a sad reality when it come to risk taking and personal initiative on the field. Order are there for a reason. If you do something outside of orders, you're on your own and the only thing that will matter is the result. If it works, you're a hero, if it fail, you're a zero. Gamble failed. He was a zero.
Captain Fuller really was a pain in the ass. Never mind the one single thing he did right by calling out the actions of Gamble, he went on to attempting to turn his friend against him, and indirectly did, demoted Street to inventory, making him the laughing stock of the unit, refused to include him in the reorganized SWAT, and accused Hondo and his unit of conspiring with the drug lord, and went further by telling Hondo that they're not to pursue the suspect and stand down. At what point would his incompetence be called out?
lol After the big incident perhaps.....Chief would have NO MORE of his none sense lol! Guarantee! chief, was already in more favor of Hondo. No surviving of his career from that. BUT one thing Fuller got right is Gamble was indeed a bit bad influence for the team lol.
The only movie police official more incompetent is Paul Gleeson in Die Hard as Deputy Chief Dwayne T. Robinson.
I can't believe people are actually trying to defend Gamble in the comments. He ignored orders to hold, snuck in, and ended up shooting a hostage while trying to play hero. Street knew this was the wrong call at the time and got roped in, and even in this scene tries to do the 'cop thing' and defend his brother-in-blue, but when it's just the two of them, he finally lets him have it. Gamble was totally wrong, and worse, has bad habits of blaming others and making decisions based on ego.
He was a "loose cannon" who refused to take responsibility for his actions.

Yeah, he thinks what he did was heroic, but.....let's be real, guys, he shot a hostage. There's no justifying that. Also, the guy insists on antagonizing the commander instead of simply taking the hit and working his way back, basically acting like a spoiled child.

Jeremy Renner stole every scene in this film from Colin Farrell . Farrell was supposed to be the next big thing but he's never had that signature film
Idk about all that.
Farrell wasn't really being pushed as the next big thing. When he started making a name for himself, it was the early 2000s, and Hollywood was too in love with established actors. They were pushing guys like Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Matt Damn, Ben Affleck, Nicolas Cage and DiCaprio. They got all the big roles in the biggest movies. Nobody else got much of a chance.

All of those films were vehicles for him to shine but he didn't stand out . Hollywood pushed all those guys you mentioned because they were better much better !!

@@ivandesantis858 We all saw Pacino phoning it in since Donnie Brasco. His one exception was Insomnia and that's probably only because it was directed by Christopher Nolan, who commands respect. I don't think it's fair to pretend this was A-game Pacino.
Minority Report wasn't a movie where he was opposite Cruise in any true sense. It was Tom Cruise's movie and Farrell got next to nothing to do, just go look at the amount of screentime Farrell got. The role was gonna go to Matt Damon and he was gonna be the main villain, but Damon turned it down. My guess is they shrunk that role substantially after Damon refused it. Then they added a different villain and rewrote the script. Only then did Farrell get the opportunity.
Here, he is with Sam Jackson but did Sam Jackson actually bring his A game? No. Why? Because he knew it was a bs script. Keep in mind they wanted to cast Arnold in Sam Jackson's role, Mark Wahlberg or Paul Walker in Farrell's, and Vin Diesel in LL Cool J's. That alone goes to show you what level of writing SWAT got. They were thinking Fast & Furious action with cops, which is probably why Michelle Rodriguez is in it.
Likely so on your point about Pacino but not Jackson plus none of that matters . When you're the headliner main star of a film it falls on you to make it work. You can't moan and make excuses that this one or that one didn't bring their A game. If Top Gun ( 1986 ) wasn't good Cruise can't say oh Tom Skerrit didn't bring his A game. Nonsense ! My original staement stands Farrell was supposed to be some big deal but it never happened . He's had a respectable good career but does not have a signature film and sorry Phone Booth doesn't qualify as a signature film . Stop it just stop it.

Any marksman would know from that close, the point you see on your scope is HIGHER than where the barrel is pointed. Dude was too busy being a fucking cowboy to remember he's responsible for every inch he misses. He should be fucking lucky the shot was a through and through instead of traveling down the hostage's shoulder and ended up through her lungs, which a 5.56 could actually do at the right angle.

People are always saying that if the good cops are gonna cover for the bad ones, then they can't really call themselves good cops anymore. Street covered for Gamble's disregard of orders and paid a price for it.

I've actually done stuff before, that was required by federal statutory law, and given the same "sometimes doing the right thing isn't doing the right thing," speech.
I reported something that was I was required to be reported within 1 hour of discovery. Resulted in a $650k fine to the company. And I got thrown under the bus.
Flip side of that coin was if it came out that I tried sweep it under the rug, I'd be looking at 5 years in a federal prison. I'm not going to compromise my personal integrity, or go to prison for anyone.

Gamble was a true narcissist. like a narcissist, they feel slighted anytime someone calls them out on their bullshit. they're like a perpetual victim, nothing they do is wrong, and even if they're in the wrong, it's still not their fault. he wasn't even smart enough to see that Street was his friend and covered for him until he shit the bed one too many times and finally made a mess that couldn't be cleaned up. his evil comes full circle when he shoots Boxer and is willing to kill other officers and civilians.
Two LAPD cops being reprimanded for a potentially bad shoot? This is the least realistic part of the movie.

Honestly, the worst decision Street made was to keep covering for Gamble. Fuller went about it the wrong way but Gamble was a danger to the team and the department. Trusting your buddy goes both ways. Personally, I'd trust the guy willing to rat me out when I'm wrong than the guy who'll torch his own career to save mine after I've fucked up by the numbers.
Gamble fucked up by the numbers. While Street went along with it, providing him back-up, his ultimate responsibility was never to Gamble. It was the team and organization as whole and to his own integrity. And while his silence would serve Gamble, it would only damage the team, the department, and his own integrity. A pretty high price to pay for someone as volatile and ill-tempered as Gamble.
Then gamble made sure he never missed and changed his name to clint

I assume you’re trying to ask how the woman can sue a cop and not a criminal, if so the answer is that 1 the criminal going to jail for robbing a bank isn’t gonna have jack shit to that would be worth suing over, 2 the police doing their job incorrectly or being poorly trained/disciplined, is more than enough grounds to win a case on top of that it’s been a while but if I remember correctly the cop is the one that actually shot her, plus the department has money from the city.

@@algordo1997 they put themselves in the position against orders that’s the whole point about lacking discipline if these two didn’t basically go rouge they could have worked out a better plan that may not have resulted in the woman getting shot, maybe not but that argument could be made on top of that it would circle back into the how can you say you’re doing what you can to protect someone when you just rush in and don’t know what’s going on in an obvious hostage situation, without knowing where the hostages were, or where/ how many hostage takers there were, that’s the reality plus if you wanna get really petty you could say his marksmanship was poor cause he missed the robbers head and hit the lady’s shoulder.
