  • In this video I pretty much have this old racing Mercury Mark 20H 16HP dialed in after discovering the timing was off considerably and a bad sparkplug boot didnt help. Also issues with the Mark 25E18HP electric starter its amazing it works at all it was in pretty bad condition.

    Can I ask where did you find a manual? Looking for a manual for a 1967 Evinrude 3hp.

    Really runs good. Great job. I’m working on a 1956 Mercury Mark 25. Having some trouble with it. Compression test top is at 90 bottom 89. Do you mind telling me what OMC coils you used. Great full for any help. It’s starting to piss me off. Thanks

      @OutBoardTink62  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Edgar Thanks! I used the common OMC under the flywheel point coils. I pulled them off the mount and slipped them on the Mercury laminate mount. I had to grind the Mercury mount down to fit the OMC coil. Also a slight grinding of the Mercury magneto plate to clear the new spark plug wire location when mounting the coils. 😊😊😊😊😊It was pretty easy actually. Thanks for your comment...subscribe and like if you like this kind of thing..

      @@OutBoardTink62 thanks. I do like this stuff and I did subscribe. I got a manual also for my Mark 25. When I got the motor it was in pieces. Right now I’m trying to learn how to use my ohms meter to test the coils and since it was already apart when I got it. Trying to figure out if I need to have the coil plate in a certain spot for timing but the way the throttle is with the tooth gear underneath the plate I don’t think there is to many spots it could be. I might be wrong with that. I know it would have been a lot easier if I was the one who took it apart instead of getting it in box and 2 bags. Lol

      @@edgarlowe6476 I picked up a manual also. Boy thats tough in pieces for sure unless your familiar with Mercurys. I have a Stevens Coil Tester & I never use it. Quicker fo me to just put a known good coil in when you do alot of repairs its easier. I know on mine the teeth on the magneto assembly if its the same they had two types. The two sets of sector teeth have to be timed first tooth to first tooth then attached like on this Mark 20H. Then I adjusted the magneto to the carb with the lever control. But your motor has tiller not sure on that process with the 25E.You can just put it a full throttle and make sure the carburetor flap is horizontal for starts. I do remember struggling to put that magneto back together and back on the engine ridiculous brass plates , big plastic spacer shims it was very tough to assemble. Classic Mercurys are not my forte for sure but I like them all. I try and stay away from Mercurys because of their crazy engineering.

      @@OutBoardTink62 I know I just got those brass plates figured out thanks to the manual. Serious pain holding them together from underneath and then dropping the screws in . I might have done it wrong, being the first time but I couldn’t put it all together and then drop it down because the metal in between the brass plate would not slide down over. Yes it was a pain big part of getting you pissed off on the build but we got it. Lol . You would not happen to have a good coil for a Mark 25 laying around to tell me what a ohms meter says would you. Would be a big help to me. The manual refers to a tester I do not have. Thought I would ask. Maybe I will get lucky and you do. Lol Thanks for all the help. Maybe soon I will have mine purring like yours. I love seeing old things come back to life. Thanks again.

      @@edgarlowe6476 Sorry for late response a big pain those magnetos but after you figure it out its doable for sure. I have no extra Mercury coils they were $129 /pc online so I used OMC coils. I did the same with an old Elgin 7.5 HP years back with a Wico magneto....Good Luck!

    Dosent look like a real 20H to me. No ser. no# plate? No Carter Carb? No throttle Bowden cable bracket? No factory fuel filter? Is the Tilotson carb a KA-7A ?

  • @Ayerlooms

    Does it have a gear shift or is it always in gear ? Very cool piece of history

    • @OutBoardTink62

      Yes only forward gear has a racing gearcase. Came with a pretty large Carter N model carburetor which I still have. I replaced it with a Tillotson period correct so the throttle would work with the factory spark advance on the side there with the magneto linkage. Thanks for Commenting !! Im not a diehard Mercury outboard guy but its a cool old motor and it was fun to get her running again. This motor came from the scrapyard 25 years ago or so.

      @@OutBoardTink62 Spark advance was locked down in the 20H when set up for racing. Carter carb was potentially faster, but a real pain to dial in. Tillotson KA7A (If I remember right.) was much easier for competition. I raced back in the mid 60s-early 70s. Quit when the 25ss class took over and they quit running BSR and BSH.

    Looks more like MK25 according to the rewind housing and carb. 20H rewind was center mount not on right side. You dd not show pics of the lower unit.

      As I said I did mention in some comments in another video awhile back I just threw the recoil on to run along with the Tillotson carb that I made an adapter plate to bolt it on. If you go back to October of 2021 you can see the racing lower unit in the other videos .I have the original parts Carter N carb & original recoil. Thanks for commenting again..

      sorry I missed that video. I do see it has the H tower housing. Does the crankcase have an extended portion where the carb bolts on? One way to tell if you have a 20H powerhead is to pull the intake port covers and look at the ports, they should be oval, not round like on a MK20/MK25. That along with the crankcase with the extended carb mount is proof positive for an H. Do you have a way for me to send you pics?
      Thanks,
      Sid
