Follow your passion, Heath. There are lots of channels where people just unbox the latest 4Ks, but I like that you give us reviews, talk about older stuff, and have heard of movies from before 1995! 😄 I don't consider myself a "collector" because I only buy stuff I want to watch, not stuff that's in a new steelbook or slip cover, and it's nice to watch a channel where someone actually watches movies and knows their context.

Thanks Heath for another great topic, it is a great time to be a movie fan. Like you I have been a movie fan all the way back to the mom and pops video stores to Hollywood video and blockbuster just to name a few. The good thing is that us collectors are always interested in new stuff albeit movies, 4k, slipcovers, box sets, etc and there are so many great companies out there that are producing some amazing stuff! Imprint, Kino Lorber, Criterion, Arrow Video, Warner Brothers Archives, Vinegar Syndrome, MVD, Vestron, Blue Underground and A24 to name a few. Heck Shout Factory released Summer School, the Temp and Wildcats not so long ago, some really good 80's movies so needless to say for now physical media and for the love of movies is still going strong! As always keep up the great work as it's always appreciated!

I couldn't agree more Heath! I have talked about this on my channel - the curation is super important. I plan on paring down the collection even further this year and ripping some discs to a NAS and then donating or selling the discs for things that I don't "need" but just want access to.

You sure have talked about curation, and I am glad that you have! I'm not ready to rip discs yet, but I do plan to look into some alternate storage methods to free up shelf space for things that I don't want to get rid of but don't need to display.

I actually learned about the @@CerealAtMidnight channel through the @FilmsAtHome channel. Glad you both do what you do. I started ripping DVD to NAS 5 years ago and gave away those DVD to charity and a few to eBay (it was very cathartic as it really was TOO much). For the films I like to rewatch or leverage my new 4K HDR home theatre set-up I purchase 4K discs and retain the Blu Rays in my collection. Thanks to you both for providing great info on your respective channels .

hi Heath, as you stated I too have moved away from Mainstream hollywood movies. This trend for me started around 2019 - 2020 particularly since a ton of movies were full of propaganda and agendas that just don't vibe with me. So since 2020 I've been diving deep into Kino Lorber, Vinegar syndrome and other labels that release older, and classic films. My film noir collection has grown thanks to your recommendations. Westerns and film noir is my go to genre these days. I appreciate the work you do. Take time to hang out with your family and I'm glad to see you will release content that is more to your liking.

When you talk about your passion for serials, "weird beat movies from the 50's", Joe Dante, psychedelic 60's flicks, film history, Westerns, etc., I find it amazing and gratifying that someone so young would care about these things. It actually gives me hope for the future of cinematic culture. You named many of the things I care about and concentrate on in my own collecting life. Happy New Year Heath! I hope that 2023 ends up being a wonderful and prosperous year for you, Brie and this amazing channel. You obviously love what you do and you have a genuine passion for physical media. Your opinions are honest and unbiased. The continued hard work is much appreciated. However, you deserve a break. You need some personal time that has nothing to do with CZcams. Step back, take a breather and relax. Burnout is a real thing and it can definitely take a toll if you aren't careful. You have been working like a machine as of late and you deserve some rest. Fewer videos won't lessen my interest in this channel because I know that the hard work and passion will always be there. No matter what decisions you make moving forward, I'll always be there to support you as best as I can. Thanks, for another wonderful video! Thanks, for everything that you do! I appreciate the kind words! CZcams is not set up to give creators breaks and they actually PUNISH CZcamsrs who slow down by throttling their video traffic, among other things. However, self care is VERY important, and I realize that I cannot continue to post as many videos or cover as much as I have in the past. 2022 was a constant cycle of record, edit, upload, repeat, every single day. It's time to reconnect with what brings me joy! It may mean less views, but I'll be happier.

Like you, I am tending to collect older stuff and usual stuff. The importance of having movies and ( in my case) tv series that you love on physical media are that it doesn't matter if a streaming service takes it out of circulation, or someone wants to "enhance" it or cut it. Plus, if it is packaged really nicely, then it is fun to just take it out and look at it. I lo e my Arrow Video Phantasm and Shaw Brothers sets. Ever since you told me awhile back you had this video idea percolating, I’ve been looking forward to it. And it in no way disappointed. For what it’s worth, I myself cannot wait to see whatever reinventions you come up with for the channel that will consistently reflect and showcase your personal attention and affection for film history. Sure, it doesn’t hurt that you and I share similar radar screens in terms of our film passion, but really just having a disc channel that doesn’t inordinately dwell on horror movies will be most welcome! I run the gamut of over a 100 years of movie history in my heart and soul and all of that is what too often goes missing on these physical media oriented channels. So keep your promise and dig deep and try to balance the same old same old with all kinds of patented Heath-ness. HOPALONG CASSIDY alongside whatever MCU is spewing this week? Why not? Bring it on!

I'm thinking that since 4k TVs are starting to become ubiquitous in homes, more and more viewers are gradually become aware that a 4k disc is the best way to experience the inherent high quality on their nice big screens.
Heath mentions older movies, westerns, Kino Lorber. Note that Kino has its own free streaming service, Kino Cult, and Criterion's The Criterion Channel at just $11/mo. Both services great for screening/discovering titles for future disc buys. Criterion Channel has lots of titles that are not in their disc collection too.

I am a CEO / owner of a consumer products firm that also operates in a market described as "in atrophy". You are right: attrition is real. But, I would strongly caution against any forecast that predicts an end of. These are entrenched markets. Even when one cannot see the end from the beginning, I would always put my money on a firm's ability to find new market paths. The impulse that we have to collect has little to do with available media--what has been done and what has yet to be done. Collecting physical media scratches a deeper itch. I very much doubt that physical media has a shelf life so short that anyone can predict its end.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před rokem +2

I agree with this 100 percent. There will never be an end to physical media as long as an audience is there to support it. But releases will go out of print and companies will fold. That's just the nature of business, so that's why I advise responsible enjoyment. Not buying out of fear, but being conscious and deliberate with who and what we support.

I'm looking forward to whatever you cover and plan to continue on Patreon. I hope you can focus more on what gets you most excited to post. It's always a bummer when I hear a CZcamsr (though I get it) say "we'd like to cover X, but the algorhithims prevent us." In 2022, largely due to you, I probably shopped more online for movies than ever, but it's still hard for me. I was raised that cash is king and you should see the product you want to buy and if you have to use credit cards, pay it off as soon as it comes in. I've broken all those rules, but get lost spreading orders over multiple boutiques. It's all good, though. By and large if I'm willing to spend the money, I can find any movie I want and the few times I do come across something that's not in HD, it's almost a shock. Speaking of which, we need a BD for "Elves" (1989).

You have to purge once in a while. It is good for you, your family and your passion. Keep on discussing the obscure things. We already know about mainstream. To answer your question, over the last couple of years Cereal At Midnight has taken up just about every waking moment of my life. Sometimes I'd watch as many as six movies in a day while also making videos about them. I have put the things I want to watch on the back-burner and prioritized new releases so I could have accurate, helpful coverage, but there was never enough time to see it all before I talked about it. That's one of the reasons I'm making some changes and trying to cover less in 2023, because I can't keep doing that.

The general public doesn't know simple things like the difference between blue ray and standard and blue ray and 4k. The general public doesn't even know that most 4k dvd come with blue ray and digital code. If people knew just very simple things like that 4k would have way more sales because it is the best bang for your buck.

Keep up great work Heath! I have found that the price for physical media have gotten very high and that is driving me to be even more selective - especially when I already have perfectly serviceable Bluray copies of films (like Scream Factory). The speed at which titles are making it onto streaming services and relative low price of digital are also factors. Martin and TCM from Second Sight are only ones I plan to add over next few months. Put a number of discs in my cart but did not pull the trigger over the holidays and ended up streaming instead.

Regarding DVDs, as I warned about a year or so ago few if any pawn shops in my area still sell DVDs (I rarely bother to check any more as it's mostly a waste of time). My local thrift can barely move them for 50 cents each. Even at the library I'm often the only one looking over and borrowing DVDs including new releases. So, I'm a bit surprised the format still commands such a lead. I will say this of the format, some older titles upgrade to a 4K screen surprisingly well (I rarely feel the need to upgrade a modern Kino DVD) but the new digital films (Dune, Batman, Marvel, some A24) are often so dark I can barely tell what's going on for large parts of the film. I'm still in the process of cutting down my collection. Kind of sad that many titles are not even worth selling in a bundle so they too get donated. Glad to hear about going with your passions. Cheers!

I've always been a physical media guy. But I also supported streaming too. Assuming the streaming content got physical releases. But I simply cannot support streaming any longer. Netflix is the main culprit. But they're all doing it. Everything from downgrading the picture quality, to stopping password sharing, to weekly releases instead of all at once, to demanding that you only watch it home (which completely defeats the point of streaming). On top of all that, paying to be disrespected like this. But the final straw for me was putting ads on their service. Something Netflix said that they would never ever do under any circumstance. And it would be one thing if it was a free ad-based membership, since they're getting money from the ads. Oh no! They want you to pay $7 a month to watch ads. That's like me paying a guy $7 to sleep with my wife. No thanks. I'm not a cuck.

    4K >Bluray>>>DVD>>>>>>VHS.
Generally, assuming a reasonable quality source and mastering, the improvement in quality between formats declines. In terms of perceived quality and enjoyment, DVD was a great improvement over VHS, and Bluray offered a noticeable improvement over DVD. 4K doesn’t offer that same experience in jumping up in quality over bluray as it did with DVD. I think Bluray is where the general public should have stoped, not DVDs, but the adoption and improvement of streaming services through a wrench in that.

As for wishlist items, I'm glad yours have been satisfied. Personally, I'm still waiting for some of mine to even get a DVD release. Titles like 'Cal' (1984 w/ Helen Mirren & John Lynch), 'Light of Day' (1987 w/ Michael J. I think 4K and Blu-ray players will be around as long as there are people to buy them. It's not something I worry about at all. When this question comes up, I like to point out that I can buy brand new 8 track players, 3.5 floppy disc drives, and cassette players on Amazon right now. Walmart started carrying blank cassette tapes again in their stores a few years ago. There are even companies that specialize in making VCRs again. There's less money in new 4K and Blu-ray players these days, but that doesn't make me worry that players are disappearing. 25 years into DVD, you can still find a DVD player just about anywhere and for cheaper than ever.

When it comes to physical media, I still love them and I do love streaming. When it comes to what physical media I buy, specifically dvd and blu-ray, it just depends on the movies I like. Movies that haven't really interested me, I watch on Netflix, but if I would really love them after watching them, I would gladly buy it on dvd or blu ray if it does get released.
I have some fears that dvds, blu rays and 4ks will become obsolete to the point where stores that depend on them close down. However, I'm happy that there are people who still love them. As long as there are people who still love them, there is no reason to stop making them. They may not be the big thing they used to be, but they still make money and filmmakers want their movies to generate revenue from everywhere.
