This great Irish rebel song tells of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The heroic men and women of the Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army, the Hibernian Rifles, Cumann na mBan women volunteers who served as nurses, and even Na Fianna hEireann boy scouts who served as dispatch runners, a force numbering less than 1,200, patriots, poorly armed with single shot Mauser rifles and an assortment of other weapons, held key strongpoints in Dublin like the General Post Office, the South Dublin Union, the Four Courts, Boland's Mill, City Hall, Clanwilliam House, and others for a week.
They fought against battle-hardened, well-trained, well-equipped British Army soldiers who numbered ten times their small force, and the British troops were well supported by machine guns, artillery, the gunboat Helga, unlimited ammunition and hand grenades, and even used improvised armoured cars. The Irish fought very honourably and with great heroism, treated captured British soldiers and officers very decently, did not loot any private property, and held off the attacks with great determination and bravery. Even the British gave them credit for fighting fairly and with courage, and treating captured British military as prisoners of war with respect, kindness and decency.
The British however did not return that courtesy, abused the Irish rebels shamefully, and executed pursuant to court martial the leaders of the Irish forces, Pearse, MacDiarmaid, MacBride, MacDonagh, Plunkett, Clarke, Keannt, even the combat-wounded James Connolly who was taken from hospital on a stretcher, and tied in a chair, and like his comrades, was shot.
The heroes of 1916 will never be forgotten for they lit the flame of Irish nationhood and gave birth to the Irish Republic. I have Irish and American citizenship and love both my countries, and especially my Irish people, their music, their heritage, their culture and their tremendous warmth, kindness and friendliness. Wherever we are, no matter how many generations have passed since our ancestors have left Ireland for the shores, of England, Scotland, Australia, America, Canada, to name a few places of the Irish diaspora, we are all tied by our blood, our heritage and our love of Ireland and the Irish.
And to and fro in my dreams I will go, and I'll kneel and pray for you, for slavery fled, oh brave patriot dead, when you fell in the foggy dew.

      @denismack2374 Před 5 lety +51

Sorry Scar Aroke. No it's the same song, mate. "The Foggy Dew," composed by Canon Charles O’Neill from Portglenone, County Antrim (1887-1963), a parish priest of Kilcoo and later Newcastle, County Down, sometime after 1919 when he was a curate at St. Peter's Cathedral, Belfast. A tribute to the Easter Uprising, as per the lyrics of this song. My Grandpa Pat Joe was a Volunteer in Oglaigh na Eireann from 1919-1922, and taught me this ballad and many other rebel songs as a lad.

Yes, Germany did give us the famous Howth Mauser rifles, and had attempted to land additional rifles and ammunition with Sir Roger Casement in time for the Easter Uprising (but were right by the Royal Navy and were forced to scuttle the vessel… and the much-needed arms).
Germany is truly a beautiful land, and we appreciated the support of the Germans. We still remember the Howth Mausers Germany sent us in songs like "A Row in the Town."

@@Khan-bq8qc Hey he is meaning our war of independence where many brave men, women and children fought and died for freedom as we where so called lesser people and should be exterminated because of our fate. Then Napoleon came and many of our young boys joined him in a fight for freedom. Almost all of them died. Then we switched sides and fought allong side Prussians Russians and the British for more freedom at Quattre-Bras and Waterloo. In the first world war we where neutral but as the closest neutral nation many people fled to us. They stayed here also and formed families. Then the second world war came and we all where being opressed there. Then we striked in februari. This was the first big civilian resistance in the western front. Many where murdered. Also the holocaust ravaged in the Netherlands more than in any other countries if you look at percentages. Then during Market Garden Dutch citizens fought alongside the liberators and got murdered. Our women gave them tea and got murdered. Khan we are a freedom loving nation and I can tell you that many men and women in the Netherlands would rise up if there isn't enough freedom or potatoes.

“All of us are going after now. Believe that we have saved the soul of Ireland. That we have struck the first successful blow to freedom and that freedom is coming. But between this and freedom, Ireland will go through Hell. But Ireland will never lie down again.”
“I and my fellow signatories believe that we have struck the first successful blow for freedom. The next blow, which we have no doubt Ireland will strike, will win through. In this belief, we die happy.” - Tom Clarke.
“Rougher than death, the road I choose. Yet shall my feet not walk astray. Though dark, my way I shall not lose, for this way is the darkest way. Now have I chosen in the dark, the desolate way to walk alone, yet strive to keep alive one spark of your known grace and grace unknown. And when I leave you, lest my love should seal your spirit’s ark with clay, spread your bright wings, O Shining Dove. But my way is the darkest way.”
“I am very happy I am dying for the Glory of God and the Honor of Ireland.” - Joseph Mary Plunkett.
“I, before paying the penalty of death for my love of Ireland and abhorrence of her slavery, desire to make known to all my fellow countrymen that I die as I have lived, bearing no malice to any man and in perfect peace with Almighty God. The principles for which I give my life are so sacred that I now walk to my death in the most calm and collected manner. I meet death for Ireland’s cause as I have worked for the same cause all my life. God save Ireland!” - Seán MacDiarmada.
“I am to die at dawn. I am ready to die, when I thank God that I die in so holy a cause. For myself, I have no regret. The one bitterness that death has for me is the separation it brings from my beloved wife, Murial. And my beloved children, Donna and Barbara. It breaks my heart to think that I shall never see my children again. But I have not wept or mourned. I counted the cost of this and I’m ready to pay it. Murial has been sent for here. I do not know if she can come. She may have no one to take to the children while she is coming. If she does. My dearest love, Murial. Thank you a million times for all you have been to me. I have only one trouble in leaving life: Leaving you so. Be brave, darling. But for your suffering, this would be all joy and glory. Goodbye, your loving husband.” - Thomas MacDonagh.
“To my poor son, Rónán, from his father who is to be executed tomorrow, for Ireland. Take good care of your mother. God help you and may He give you a long and happy life. May God free Ireland.”
“Aíne, my wife. Keep this in memory of me, Aíne, my love. Tell Rónán I’m dying for Ireland. When he is older, he will understand. My dearest Aíne. My poor little sweetheart of how many years ago? Ever my comforter. God comfort you now. What can I say? I die a noble death for Ireland’s freedom. Have hope, my love. Stay strong until we meet again in Heaven. You and I and poor little Rónán. Adieu.”
“Ireland has shown she is a nation. In the years to come, Ireland will honor those who risked all for her honor, at Easter 1916.” - Eamonn Ceannt.
“One man can free a people. As One Man redeemed the world. I will take no break. I will go into battle with bare hands. I will stand up before the gall, as Christ hung before men on a tree, and I say to my people’s masters: Beware. Beware of the thing that is to come. Beware of the risen people who shall take what you would not give.”
“This is the death I should have asked for if God had given me the choice of all deaths: To die a soldier’s death for Ireland and for freedom. We have done right. People will say hard things of us now, but later on they will praise us.” - Padraig Pearse.

Lancel Lannister The Easter rising took place right in the middle of the war. The British government promised home rule to the Irish who fought for them (this promise was never granted as it was denied in the House of Lords 2-3 times if memory serves me correctly) This song is about the Easter rising hence the line “‘‘twas better to die ‘neath an Irish sky” essentially meaning that it was better to be killed in rebellion of the English than to fight for them in hope of freedom.
A good song on the Irish in WW1 would be “green fields of France”
