  • Achara and Vivian react to the captivating biographical drama, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. This movie takes us on a riveting journey through the life of the legendary Punjabi folk singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, and his wife, Amarjot Kaur. Their songs, which were social commentaries or devotionals, became massive hits in the 80’s.
    The movie is directed by the renowned Imtiaz Ali, who has given us unforgettable movies like ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Rockstar’. The film stars the versatile Diljit Dosanjh (Good Newwz & Soorma) as Amar Singh Chamkila and the talented Parineeti Chopra (Ishaqzaade & Kesari) as Amarjot Kaur. The supporting cast includes Apinderdeep Singh, Anjum Batra, and others.

    alot of people are talking about diljit and hes great but pari’s performance is something else. the hardwork she has put into this film is visible, from gaining 16 kgs for the role to practising everyday for 6 months in ar arhman’s studio for the perfect pitch because the scenes in the film where pari and diljit are singing are sung live at the akhada’s, they are not lip syncing and its so satisfying. and her acting is so amazing that it doesn’t feel like watching pari, its like watching amarjot.

    14:55 this scene isn’t probably solely for the pictures. When a married woman dies while her husband is alive ( i.e she’s not a widow), she’s wrapped in with a red cloth and not white, which signifies she died ‘suhaagan’ (married ; with a living husband).
    (Edit-In case anyone’s confused, She got shot and died first, then Chamkila. She did not die a widow.)

    The brilliance of Imtiaz Ali comes to the fore in such a fresh and beautiful way through this film. Right from the beginning,when amarjyot is shot in the head, the shock factor of the scene made me absolutely dive into the movie not wanting to miss even a single detail. The journey of chamkila right from his first stage performance, the presentation of chamkila and amarjyot as simple people just doing what they love along with catering to people what they want to hear, the importance of tikki, all these make for a beautiful movie that is chamkila. The parallel narrative of present and past adds to the curiosity. And the final master touch was vida Karo for me, the lyrics were so on point. It was heart breaking that someone could actually kill a human being for as petty reason as this, was felt more through the lyrics . Diljit and parineeti made the movie as authentic as it could look on screen. For me this movie is already a classic , if that’s possible. Can’t wait for another one from Imtiaz.

      @meltherecafe2394 Před měsícem

      Some one like you always comes uninvited on all forums to talk about caste issue and to divide Indian society. Chamkila sir was actually killed because the powerful people of Punjab that is the religious militants were ordering the common people of Punjab to stay away from sexual stuff but Chamkila was openly defying their orders. It was an ego clash and the religious militants had to set an example that not following their orders has consequences so as to keep the people scared of their authority. That was the reason.
      Stop seeing the world from ur narrow caste lens. Nobody cares in present India about ur low caste actually apart from politicians who use it to make u feel humiliated and win ur cheap votes. Please stop spreading this caste narrative and filth everywhere and do India a big favour. thanks.

    I love your guy's reaction to this brilliant movie. This movie is fantastically done by Imtiaz Ali as we all know him for his wide range of movies. There is no other director who could've directed this movie as he did a study on both the characters (Chamkila and Amarjot) from eyewitnesses. I know Achara pointed out about creating narratives from different accounts and she is correct but all the accounts were from people near Chamkila like his first wife, Silvia (Income Tax Guy), Tikki, and some of his other peers. He recorded accounts from people around him to get a better sense of his character and he showed us exactly what Chamkila was like in real. So everything in the movie was shown exactly like it was in Chamkila's real life. He didn't try to hide his flaws or how dirty his songs were and he objectified women and especially his caste. Since caste was a big issue back then and somewhat still is depending on the region; Chamkila came from a very low caste and this infuriated people above his caste. They didn't like the idea that a guy from such a lower caste could become big as the movie was portrayed as his living condition and his father who used to get beat up by his employer. Also, in the scene where's Sonia manager says, "Just because I let you sit with me, you think we've become equal", well in English you won't get what he said but he said the word "Jaat" or "equal" also known caste. So these are little things that Imtiaz Ali pinpointed but a lot people maybe have not considered it. I mean if you look at it and even in the film it was said that he considered Elvis of Punjab. His popularity was rising to the point that some people who were trying to be big; might have had some hatred towards him. Especially his popularity during the 1984 riots. If you guys wanna know more about the 1984 riots, please watch "Punjab 1984" which also stars Diljit Dosanjh as the main character, and his other film "Jogi" portrays the lives of Punjabi people during that year. His sense of direction is amazing as you guys also pointed out by his uses of different aspect ratios, using real accounted photos, split screens, etc. He brilliantly started the film as we all knew that Chamkila was killed and there was no point in building up from his past as the outcome is known by everyone. He kept reminding us that "don't forget they are dead" by cutting into the present day and showing their dead bodies. Also, you guys pointed out there was no resolution and you guys didn't get what to make out of it, well that's exactly the reason Imtiaz Ali is a great director. He brought out raw Chamkila and this movie was a biopic but it brought justice to Chamkila as to why he sang those songs. It was his childhood and how he was brought up with what happened around his environment. He didn't create any vulgar songs after he promised not to do so but it was the people who he catered to that demanded those songs. It felt as if his past was just haunting him again and again and not leaving a choice for him to better his life. There is no resolution to this movie because the case was closed and the killers were never identified. He closed the movie the same way their case was closed, unsolved. They are dead and that's it but they will continue to live on within their records and albums. I always love Achara because she loves Indian cinema and she understands the emotions and sentiments of Indian Cinema. She always makes out what the characters are portraying or what the directors are trying to say. What can I say about the cast, no one and I mean it no one could've done it better than DIljit and Parineeti. Even Diljit said in an interview that he thought he knew Chamkila more than anybody but when he met with Imtiaz Ali; he was shocked because he knew him to the littlest details; like how he stood up and how he walked. Parineeti was phenomenal in this movie as she learned to speak "theta" Punjabi, which is pure Punjabi spoken in rural parts of India. One of the songs in this movie was recorded live on set by both of them. She got a little bigger for the role as Amarjot in real life was a little bigger. Diljit is also killing it these days, he certainly has earned a legend status for him. Diljit is such a versatile actor; he could pull off comedy movies, romantic comedies, and serious roles such as "Jogi", "Punjab 1984", and "Udta Punjab". Plus he is a great singer and a dancer; he is so versatile all around. He is the biggest Punjabi artist and he is the biggest artist in India and around the world selling sold-out shows in stadiums. He sold out Wembley Stadium twice. Some fun facts about the movie were that the scenes where they were shot were in the same location where Amarjot and Chamkila were killed and they set up the tents for the show in the same place it was originally set. I like how Imtiaz Ali gave a quick run down on Amarjot's family as they cared for money and gold instead of their dead daughter and it is true because Chamkila's first wife confirmed that Amarjot's family left nothing for her and her son. Another fun fact is the song at the end where Amarjot and Chamkila were shown in the movie was an original song in their voices that was recorded just for the movie by them. All the other songs in the movie from them were sung by Parineeti and Diljit themselves. Again thank you for reacting to this brilliant movie as we all enjoyed as much as you guys did.

    Quite a few people outside of India know about sikh extremists group called khalistan. In the 80's there was a lot of bloodshed in Punjab. A uncle of mine who used to live in Punjab at that time told me the horror story of that time. A group of extremists sikh with swords in their hands were standing outside his home and arguing among themselves that who will loot his belongings like who will take the scooter who will get the jewelery etc. Imagine the horror of the family hearing this from inside. And what was their fault? Jus bcoz they're Hindus. So he with family left everything behind and settled in Delhi-NCR. Chamkila was killed during those times i.e in the 80's. These extremists want to make a separate nation "khalistan" out of India exclusively for sikhs goverened strictly according to their beliefs. They also assassinated first female prime minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi followed by riots in 1984.

    You misunderstood it. It was not for picture. In Sikhism and Hinduism when a married woman dies she gets cover in red clothes.

    Imtiaz Ali, the director of the movie told in an interview that it was not his intention to investigate the murder of chamkila. The movie is for reflection. For us to reflect on society. That's it.
    This is also the reason that Imtiaz did not glorify chamkila. He just shoed his life as it was and did not try to justify any of his actions.

    Amar Singh Chamkila belonged to a Dalit (so called “low” caste / untouchable). That’s the reason why he was killed otherwise there are numerous punjabi singers who sing vulgar songs and are rich & famous.

Please watch this movie, it is a tribute to Freedom Fighter VEER SAVARKARJI who inspired Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose....paved the path for Indian independence. I think it was never about chamkila and hence who killed him didn’t really matter.
    What mattered was ART was and is always censored, it was chamkila in the movie but historically there are so many similar stories.. it’s something that the audience needs to think about.. art is a mirror of society, if it’s popular it means that the public connects to it.
    But bowing down to higher fundamentalist or Governmental powers take this authority of identity away from the people.
    Bottom line- Who has the right to control expression?
