Just to clarify the lyrics guys, they have done a terrible job with english subtitles. At one point the song goes, “gori hikk te malayian aayian”, hikk in punjabi means chest and they translate it as boobs. And I know that is what he is referring to but he was not as explicit as the english translations are making him look. He was subtle and cheeky with his lyrics. You had to use you brain to get what he was trying to say. That is what made him such a revolutionary lyricist. As a Punjabi speaker I am just disappointed with english subtitles

Imo the subtitles are actually accurate cos that way people know what he actually means and plus nobody is gonna waste their time trying to crack the guys songs lmao
There is language barrier that nobody can explain in English. In punjabi those lyrics are very subtle that its not easy to be offended by them until you try to hear them by being on other side . I hope u guys can understand this.

Good choice. This will remain as one of the best Indian movies this year for sure. Imtiaz put a lot of visual creativity in there and the edit is top notch, plus of course the great music, performances and well handled social messages (not just about extremism and the hypocrisy of society, but also about the role of the media in witch hunts and about fake feminism).
I can't wait for the other parts do it ASAP 😭😭😭😭

Have you heard Wheeler Walker Jr's songs? His songs are about sex, alcohol, drugs and F bombs, he doesn't use double meaning or coated words.
Chamkila used to be 10 times in terms of lyrics but his lyrics were double meaning, never used profanity.

The English subtitles were kind of odd for this one....e.g the person shown as the father according to the subtitles is actually his uncle... But chamkila considers him as a father figure.... The subtitles straight up take away the nuance.

The after effects of war in Afghanistan in 1970s80s between "Mujahedeen" and Russia spilled over all over this area. Khalistanis (who wanted a separate country in Punjab) supported by Pakistani intelligence started forcing people to wear certain clothes (especially girls/women), forcing people to let their beards loose, wear turbans, sing, hear, listen and read only what they want, otherwise they kill them. Chamkila was a poor person making his daily bread and butter by providing people entertainment. He was killed because he became successful despite being of one of the lowest caste. This whole aspect of Islamic terrorism allied with Khalistani terrorism was overlooked in this movie.

Many of his songs are not even that dirty. I think he got flack for writing songs about affairs between sister in law and brother in law. But other than that I listen to Chamkila and many of his songs are not as dirty as some people make them. Some are for sure.
