- In this video I show you how I make large platters. I show you how to center large amounts of clay, (unlimited amounts of clay) with the least effort and then create an open plate form. I made many of these, up to half a meter!, for some amazing catering companies, cafes and delicatessens. I even show you how to make your own cutting wires to size. Anyway, as usual there's something delish at the end .... so enjoy đ... NOOOO we didn't really eat them all!!!

wow that's really cool! Thanks for the tip about the centering such large lumps of clay and about making the wiring tool. really helpful. Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful... there are tons of tools you can make yourself...
S for sharing. The desert looks great as well. Recipe please?đ
Ha.... i would love to be able to make these too! We have an amazing local Malaysian cafe that makes them. They are definitely a special occasions thing... and we didn't eat them all (not in one sitting anyway đ)
About how thick should one make the bottom of the plate? Do you cover the rim of the plate as it dries? You make cutting plates off the bat look so easy.
Great questions. I generally make the bottom of my plates 10mm then I add another 3mm for wiring. But this will depend on whether you want a footring. I always trim and compress but rarely trim a footring. Even if I hold the wire perfectly flat and taught there is always a little clay left on the bat. I try to work with soft clay (it's easier on the body) - so wiring through is easier. Before I wire I make sure i trim around the very base with an arrow head tool. This helps guide the wire.
I also always cover plates (oops.... I should have mentioned this in the video).
Over time i have learned early to minimize the thickness and weight of plates... Making plates and platters for restaurants was good training. I have my own cupboard full of plates which i use every day so i value them not being too heavy.
Gorgeous! †Thanks for sharing the fires piece. What glaze did you use?
Thanks. I used an oriental clear glaze. The platter at the end of the video is the clear - over the buff stoneware and on the thumbnail the same glaze with an opacifier and and apple green stain added.
Nyonya kuih , yummy đ
@@siewhooipisces Certainly! But not for daily consumption though đč
