  • This is the full untold story of the day I got 5 mountain bikes and my trials motorbike stolen. It's taken me well over a year to almost come to terms with it and be able to talk about it openly.
    I've since been fortunate enough to partner up with Squire Bike Locks whom this video is brought to you by and learn more about protecting my bikes and what locks would do the right job.
    Below are some links to what I use and they are also on offer as a bundle package:

    If you have any questions about my theft or prevention leave them down below.
    Thanks for watching and I'll see you on the trails!

    I feel your pain, and understand that sensation of having your whole inside torn out upon discovering the theft.
    I suffered a similar situation in 2010 when my 2 bikes were stolen from my home workshop.
    The Whyte 46 was my travelling companion which shared adventures with me across the world, it was like losing a close friend.
    The scum gained entry by removing part of the workshop roof and then forced the entry door (outward opening) from the inside. The bikes were never seen again.
    I received a crime number and nothing else.
    The insurance paid out, but it's the feeling of being helpless at stopping the scum that's perplexing and hard to overcome.
    The thiefs also know how long it takes for the insurance to payout and 8 months after the theft they broke in again, using the same method, probably hoping to find replacement bikes, fortunately I kept them in the spare bedroom.
    You certainly end up feeling paranoid over security and it hits you hard in the pocket to buy preventative security.
    Keep up the good work and thank you for the amazing videos.

    Sorry to hear it Scotty ! Agreed... it absolutely sucks ! I can relate as I had 3 of my mountain bikes stolen 3 weeks ago... and am going through a similar process trying to secure my home and prevent this from happening again. I've added locks, flood lights, notifications, and also AirTags on all of my current bikes. One thing to keep in mind is that In the end nobody was harmed, and it's just stuff that can always be (eventually) replaced :)

    There are many locks and types of security available. One good way of securing bikes is to remove the wheels and batteries from bikes, they are harder to move around without they wheels and are harder to get rid of without important parts.

    I have often worried about certain youtubers who film inside lockups/garages/sheds. Filming the inside of your property in 4K, allowing people to see in HD the type of locks they have, catches on windows, etc. It may take months or even years, but they eventually get targeted.
    They may think they are not giving anything away in regards to their location, but people are very easy to find these days, with or without geographical clues from videos.
    It was very sad to hear that this happened to you, Scotty. Unfortunately, this is how many come to the realisation that there are some really unsavoury individuals out there, and when you have something they want, they will eventually pay you a visit.

    I had my bike stolen at work garage, used my old trusty Merida HT as urban bike. Felt terrible walking home on foot.
    My neighbor got this summer really nice MTB XC full in endgame kit stolen literally in front of him when he was unloading his car. Thief just hopped in and rode casually away like ...
    Guy did not cycle yet from that moment :(
    Your new setup and locks look good, fingers crossed to everyone to not have any more bikes stolen!

    Hi Scott sadly I had a similar experience down south here in Oxfordshire where 6 of my bikes were stolen from my property. It’s good to here that police showed up on the same day for you as it took 5 days before a officer showed up at my property. Which was disappointing considering we had footprints and so forth which was good evidence.

    What's scary is that the thieves probably did a lot of reconnaissance work days, even weeks in advance before they decided to engage. But with this new massive lock setup, I'm pretty sure you will be able to keep your bikes for many years to come! 🔒💪

    @pmacfto Před 7 měsíci

    My bikes were stolen in much the same way - they could not get through the lock that was chaining 2 ebikes together, so they took the wheels off and passed them and the still locked frames through a small window into the woods - they also took my son's bike. It's not a nice feeling.
    However, they used an allen key from my toolbox that we don't use on the bikes as we have bike tools and from this they identified the guy from prints the forensics took off the key. The court case was supposed to be yesterday but was adjourned for the 2nd time.
    I now have ground anchors and serious chains and cameras with an alarm in our bedroom. But, they will take it if they want it bad enough - we can only be as secure as we can be as a deterrent.

    What a nightmare, I feel terrible hearing that. How do these people live with themselves, as I'm sure they know the misery they cause. Years of hard work, saving up and upgrading your bikes. Not even an opportunist thief but a "team" of pros (clearly has to be more than 1) plus having enough knowledge of how to dismantle bikes, all different systems and tools required.
    Insurance is so much also, I don't have any, who would you recommend? 😬🙏

    Cameras and lights help but make sure the sensors are secure, as they can be manipulated. Though there are sensors that can detect movement trhough walls so can be installed inside to scan the garden and therefore ensure that cameras and lights get activated

    sorry to say this but the locks are mostly useless. it takes about 1 minute to get through them with a portable angle grinder. it's good you installed light and surverlence though. Strong door, no windows etc. it all helps. consider putting tags in the frames of the bikes so you can follow where they are being transported to, if stolen.

    • @sijmes
      @sijmes Před 7 měsíci

      Apple airtags make a noise to let the thieves know that the bikes are tagged as soon as they take hold of the bike. This can be avoided by cutting out the speaker in the tag, but after a certain amount of time, the thieves receive a notification on their phones that a tag is travelling along with them. Its not guaranteed that the police will send anyone to the location of your bikes....

  • @Coolcmsc
    @Coolcmsc Před 7 měsíci

    Dire. Dire. So, I make no apology for the length of this comment arising from bitter experience (some things, even insured, just can’t be replaced)..
    We have horses and all the tack that goes with that and bikes. We had a break in years ago and took police advice (community copper). I did a lot of research and learned how to install cctv properly with all recordings immediately sent to an off-site server. We now have very secure storage (including doors and panelled walls and no windows - note it’s much easier to simply cut a hole in a shed wall or whatever with a ‘quiet’ battery disk cutter than bother with the actual door) and within the storage 16mm minimum (some more) chain/locks through the bikes such that they are impossible to dismantle without removing the chains. All that secured with ground anchors bolted into the correct concrete. We have decent security lighting - not Micky mouse. The cctv is inside the storage rooms as well as around the property, so that there’s a decent chance of face identification in anything short of a full face mask: because the bast**ds will likely think they’re safe inside an outside storage and will drop their guard. We have lots of professionally produced bespoke signs up, lots and lots of them, and the cctv has speakers and a siren (or message) can be set of if I detect them. The outside rooms are alarmed in a way that works with spiders etc don’t set off. This may seem overkill, but I’m in a rural community where those nicking stuff are familiar with high value items such as ATVs and other farm kit. The cost of all the above is considerably less than the value of replacing the equine equipment and bikes and that’s before the emotional toll which has been very well described here. Because I have horses, stables and paddocks, I can’t hide the fact that I’ve likely got stuff worth nicking, so I might get my stuff nicked. But the truth is, having taken the visible precautions set out here, it’s far more likely that I’ve already been ‘scoped out’ several times and a sensible decision has been made each time to go somewhere else nearby that has obviously not invested in their investment, so to speak. This video has confirmed my certainty that I’ve done the right thing. If Sqire doesn’t do it for you, I can suggest Pragmasis, a British company that produces only the best kit here in the U.K. for just cycles and motorbikes who are great at offering advice on the phone which is actual gold dust - specialists then and I have no connection to them whatsoever (securityforbikes.com/index.php). Lastly, have you heard of shed shackles (securityforbikes.com/proddetail.php?prod=ShSh)? These reinforce the walls of a shed making them harder to breach and double up as a second option for securing heavy chain if ground anchors aren’t an option and a shed door can be secured with a ‘shed-bar’ which is exactly what it sounds like, a thick secure bar across your shed door (easily googled).Thank you!
