"move to another state where freedom is still legal." By far the best statement I have ever heard all day!
Thanks!
Rolling on the ground laughing man. That phrase.... funny shit. Any way good video thanks bud. Subscribed.
Newbius93 same here!
I live on Commifornia (LA to be exact), where freedom is extinct lol
Lmao, I commented before I watched this and unsurprisingly, it was about us lol
Thank you for the advice!! Just got insurance, and going for inspection! I hooked up my 97’ xr 250 r with all the recommended parts from you to be road worthy! Horn, mirror, reflective tape, and led bulb with brake light conversion! In summit county CO and ready to hit trail to trail without a doubt! Thanks Hermit!! ✌️
love the "oh crap, I screwed up" lol.
Thanks. I checked your channel the other day and did see any new videos. You should throw another one up soon just for old times sake.
minitstop ☝
best most detailed video on dirt to street legal I've seen, thanks
You're awesome for making this video!! Very simple, very fun, very appreciated!! I loved the commentary..
Thanks! Glad to help.
You're the only person I saw who did it in Colorado, thank you. I've been looking for videos on how to do this.
Been there, glad I could help.
been trying to get my bike street legal for a couple months and stumbled on this.. you passed my house! happy days from another Colorado boy!
Awesome! I just got an inspection this morning for an XR400 and when I went to the DMV I found out the bike was already titled to somebody other than the guy I bought it from. So now I'll be making more videos to document what happens next.
I think you just saved me $250. You are a good man. Thank you.
LMAO! I sold the Deathwings that came on my DRZ within a week of purchasing the bike. $80 on craigslist! I was amazed someone was actually willing to buy them.
Man. Maybe I should sell mine.
I did a very similar conversion for my CRF230F in AZ. It was a bit more work since it had no lights to begin with. I used an LED headlight.
If I can find a simple LED replacement for the headlight I'll probably do it.
Thanks for showing what you did for the brake light. I hope my xr400 is the same and I can copy what you did. Az is very friendly to plate off-road vehicles and for dirt bikes the requirements are minimal. Just a brake and headlight. Didn’t really wanna add some weird aftermarket tail light or extra crap I don’t need.
Dude, thanx so much!!! Just got an xr500r and wanting to do the same thing.
Yes, it's a few bucks but you can ride it in National Parks, or anywhere else and not have to pay the off road sticker fee every year, required in some states. So, yeah, worth doing. Thanks Hermit.
You put a smile on my face. Yes I will be leaving California soon don't worry not in your state, although there is some greating riding in Colorado.
God's speed.
just don't vote like your'e from cali when you do.
You cracked me up at times in this, lol
cool video man. i ride a ninja but this is good to know if i ever wanna go dual sport too! i subbed to your channel.
Thanks!
Can you give more info on the taillight/brake light bulb? I was told that the XR generates AC power, not DC without a rectifier, and this will kill most LED’s
Getting my ducks in a row to legalize my xr400 in Ohio. Rewatching your vids. Laughing my ass off. Great stuff buddy. Hope ya come back cant wait to see ya ride the 400 more
It sure is nice to live in a free state. This all would apply here in AZ too. The only difference is there would be no inspection, refactors are not required and you would need a title. All vehicles even off road vehicles are titled here in AZ. Great video. So much here say on this subject in every state. I need one of those horns.
Yeah if I had a title I could just register it, but most people with dirt bikes here don't bother to keep their titles, so you have to start from scratch.
I've heard about the South Dakota " plating " process before , however since my brother lives in AZ can I use his address to do this whole procedure ? ( forms, paperwork etc..) how easy/difficult is it ?? I've got a wr450f that i'm trying to convert to a supermoto here in SoCal
Sam Bumanglag Sounds complex. Cali is kind of funny from what I understand. They will not recognize plated vehicles from other states. I am not certain what they do or don't consider legal over there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. WR's are awesome bikes.Good luck!
I bought one of those brake light pressure switches and it stopped working after a while. What I did was find a XL 250 that was blown in the back of a Moto shop, the customer left it there and never came back, so i was able to strip it and I was making my XR 250 legal so it was all Honda parts and it all fit perfect, bar switches speedo everything you could imagine I took a whole box full of like new parts for 45.00$ the XL had 2500 miles on it the owner never checked the oil from day one and blew up a brand new bike, was what I was told. There was already a odo on the XR so all I did was hook up the cable to the XL speedo and that was that, everything else was stock Honda so zero problems, I made a DIY XR 250 into a XR 250 L very easy.
What did you do for valve clearances when’ doin your valve adjustment?
Thank you.
Came up on recommended. Subscribed.
Sweet! Thanks!
TheRealDubA that's how I found him. The more I watch him the more he's recommended. You know what that means? CZcams is watching what we do! Creepy. Kidding. lol
Do you need the from brake to trigger the brake light?
Can we see a video of the brake light modifications? Cant seem to find one
What do you do if you weren't issued a title when you purchased the bike? Also, would I have to go through the whole process of figuring out who the last guy to have the VIN was?
Does anyone know if this still applies in Colorado? It appears Colorado made it a bit more difficult for UTVs in 2001 but I don't see that they lumped dirt bikes in with that bill at all.
Well, I guess we're playing cops and robbers in the woods tomorrow. I guess I'm the robber and you are now officer HermitDeeeeeeVlog
YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAHHH.
So I'm in the process of getting my little Minibike street legal. I wonder if it will be easier when I've already registered the bike with the Dept of Wildlife?
For the horn I took a 12v drill battery, a cheap 12v horn, and a button. Wired it all up and I can put it on just about anything.
Awesome, I like that.
I put it on my bicycle and scare the crap out of people with it
hey if you dont mind me asking, what insurance companies do you reccommend for insuring a dirtbike in Colorado? And about how much am i looking at paying?
Great video Hermit, lucky you, you get to use hand signals in CO. Here in NY road-legal bikes must have lit turn signals... on top of everything else you mentioned. Still, great video, thanks for sharing it!
I'd like to see if I can get turn signals working on just the stator eventually.
Swap the headlight to an LED bulb, go all LED signals, and maybe add a good capacitor. Or you could go the route you took with your horn. Get a set of battery powered bicycle signals.
Rick Koehler Yeah, I was thinking going the all LED route and seeing how it works out. Maybe I'll look for a cheap simple control and blinkers.
Excellent and to the point. Thanks. I would like to ask you a question if possible through email.
Sure, hermitdavlog at gmail.
Where did you get the speedometer?
good video!!! by the way, aren,t hand signals made with left hand?
Not if you're already holding a piece of paper if your left hand. I think it's a loophole.
Does anyone know about ohio and the freedom there. I'm trying to get a ttr 125 and want to so this
Another reason to like Colorado.
Myep!
Do you need your motorcycle license or permit to drive a dirtbike on the street after you've had all of the proper inspections and everything done?
Did you still need to submit an Application for Title and/or Registration or was the Certification of Equipment Compliance for Motorcycles equivalent to applying for registration without filling out the form(DR 2395)?
If its 100 cc do I register it as a moped?
How do i get the printed out list of requirements you are reading from ???
Hope i can do this in Georgia.
I've been looking into doing this for awhile. Eventually I'd like to plate all sorts of ridiculous bikes. Makes me wish I still had my YZ250.
Yeah, I'm definitely going to plate all sorts of bikes.
You can’t plate a YZ250
UNDERGROUND WHEREHOUSE Yeah you can. I had a plated 2008 YZ250. I bought it from a guy in Oregon with an Oregon street legal title for it. Transferred to Wi no questions asked.
".....where freedom is still legal." HAahahahaahahahahahaa.......and that's the game! Good stuff, my friend! I keep kicking the idea of getting the WR450 street legal, so can explore many of the dirt roads/paths/trails that just lead off from our roads...
Do it!
maybe...can still one day...ride with the future king of the US? :)
lol always enjoy.
Thanks!
Did anyone else catch the how to go from legal to un legal
Ride it to California.
Yes...!! Lol
In Arizona they just send you new MC plates to replace your RV plates, and expect that you made it street legal. My 2017 KTM 300 XC is street legal, primarily off highway use, $4.00 a year registration.
That's awesome. Freedom is very legal in AZ.
Nevada is pretty much the same with the small exception that you take your bike into a shop certified to certify the bike as road worthy.
Sounds better as long as the shops are just as lenient.
+Hermit DaVlog I've heard it varies, some don't care about DOT tires while others do. I've debated doing this for about three years now.
WHAT ABOUT IF YOUR IN TEXAS IS IT DIFFRENT
I live in Oregon, how do I get my xr250 street legal?
can i add all those lights and a headlight with no battery on my cr250 ? i need to find a headlight that will fit as well
Yeah. I don't have a battery on this bike.
Joey Shadden try it. If the light dims from normal you know it didn't work.
Freedom is ALWAYS illegal because those that want power over you will always say keeping what you earn is against the law , riding your own dirt bike where ever you want within reason is against the law , determining your own future is against the law! btw awesome video
Thanks!
At the time you did your inspection did you need hi-lo headlight in Colorado?
+Mountain Refugee Nope.
Thanks
nice video. it inspired me to make a video on the same subject. but my bike didnt have a headlight or brakelight to begin with. I added a headlight, brakelight, blinkers, and horn all without tying into the motor. check it out!
Awesome! I will!
May we have the link to video?
Does that bike have elec. start? If not how do you charge the battery to power the speedometer, brake light?
It does not. There's no battery. Everything is LED and runs off the stator.
How would I wire that up?
I’m looking to buy a pocket bike can you give me any good first pocket bikes to buy and my price Range is between $300-400
100cc street legal dirtbike sounds like a good idea
I'd try it. Be like a more dirt worthy Grom.
Hermit DaVlog how about a street quad in Virginia
California where I can ride bike year around due to nice weather but government wouldn't let me
I'm in Colorado as well and want to plate my 2003 xr400r. I didn't get a title with purchase. Did you have a title before getting street legal title?
Thats what I wanna know, also what ended up happening with you?
well that's nice... i just spent $1200 getting a 2007 RMZ250 legal for intermediate road use in Alberta Canada. the road laws are strange here.
nice video bro
Thanks!
Will this work for atvs?
Does making a bike street legal in Colorado improve its resale value?
getting my 84 kdx 250 street legal let's go hit some trails soon
That's a cool old bike.
MAY 2019 still the same form just FYI
At first these videos were informative but irritating. I've grown to appreciate the shit out of this guys personality hope he makes more . Salute
where in CO are you located?
I'm in CO as well. I appreciate the info. I have a minibike (Doodlebug), and just got pulled over a block from my house; hence the inspiration to get it registered. But I'm not sure if mine has a VIN on it. Actually, I just checked, and there is a long number engraved into the neck of the frame...looks pretty darn close to a VIN. Anyway, the initial reason to comment, was to ask if per chance that doesn't qualify as a VIN, if you knew how one would go about getting a VIN issued for a "motorized cycle" that doesn't yet have one.
I do not know. Hopefully that number is a VIN.
With these steps can you ride it on streets. I wanna get a bike and make it street legal but I live CSU and its so busy here. Would it be legal?
Well they outlawed freedom in Boulder back in the 70s but in the rest of Colorado yes, this is the process to make the bike street legal.
Hermit DaVlog thanks so much!
The Gov should make it way easier to register these old dirt bikes we find in barns etc. more bikes less pollution
U left out the stop hand signal?
I usually do. Hard to brake clutch and signal, but the point I was making was that you don't need "turn" signals. Bike has to have a brake light.
insurance too
Yes!
So I'm in Colorado Springs and would like to ask the most logical order to do all of this in order to legalize a dirt bike
I went through it in the video in the order I did it, and I don't think there's a lot of choice. Put the parts on, then insurance, then vin inspection, then registration.
What speedomoter did you use?
It's not required in Colorado, but you can buy a Garmin forerunner 101 used for under $10 bucks and no wiring it's battery operated. GPS speedo, trip meter and bread crumb navigation. They work sweet in the trials as well especially in areas you aren't familiar with.
@@allaboutroofing2 thank you! I have unfortunately sold my bike since that comment 😔 but looking for a new one now
Anyone use dirtlegal for California
what about the lcd screen? speedo?
Trailtech Vapor. Speed, temp, rpm. Pretty handy to know temp and rpm on this thing.
+Hermit DaVlog nice
What's up hermit! I have an 83 xr500 that runs on AC... Is your bike DC?
No it's just running on the stater. No battery at all.
Weird... the LED was just plug n play? I always thought you couldn't run LED with an AC system.
+Hermit DaVlog Some are designed specifically for motorcycles, some just pulse so fast you can't tell.
Ahhh that's good to know! Whereabouts in CO do you ride? I'm based in Boulder
So, if i buy a bike from someone on CL, and they sign the Bill Of Sale, that qualifies? Or does it have to be from the manufacturer..?
please replyyyy :(
I doubt they'll even have the title, that's why i ask.
Yep that's why I made the video. If you watch again I did get specific about this and have links for a bill of sale in the description. You do not need anything from the manufacturer in Colorado. You need a bill of sale from the seller signed under penalty of perjury and stating it's for off road use only. You also need the two forms from the highway patrol I talked about. Your mileage may vary but this is exactly what I did.
Hermit DaVlog yeah. i live in Texas, pretty sure it,ll be easy for me haha
wonder how this works in illinois
I don't know, but I bet they outlawed freedom there.
Register it in Michigan. Common Northern Wisconsin trick.
Do it matter what size bike u have?
To get street legal? Nah.
that LED bulb won't last long. you're on a regulated AC current off the stator. LED's require prefect DC to reach potential and last longer. this is just a heads up, your setup looks descent.
Thanks. I figured it was only getting half the pulses on DC, but I've never heard it would make it burn out fast. I'll keep an eye on it.
Hermit DaVlog usually the backdraw (-v) can overload the anode of the LED diode and cause heat, so then failure. easy fix: replace the regulatory with a reg/rec for the same model, OR use a polarity independent bulb.
I tried finding a polarity independent bulb and might be using one. Some bulbs explicitly say not for dirt bikes and some don't so I got one that didn't. Couldn't find any other indicator. If you have information or a link to a bulb that is definitively polarity independent please pass it along and I'll put it in the description.
The bulb referenced in your link above on Amazon, is that the exact bulb you installed or something similar? I didn't see this discussion in the comments, so ordered this bulb and it will arrive this week. Hopefully it will last long enough to get through the inspection process. I'm still interested to know a p/n when a polarity independent bulb is found. - Great instructional vid by the way. Thanks. Are you a member of the Front Range Dual Sport Riders?
desert speed What not just put a diode in-line?
very interesting vblog but how is it street legal if its registered for off road use only? What is the point of registration for off road use? sorry not trying to get down on ya or be a hater just confused. and gee i wish i could get my dual sport factory built bike road legal that easily in New Zealand. keep up the good work
I can't say it makes sense to me either, I just know at the DMV if it doesn't say that on the paper it might not be accepted. Maybe if it doesn't say that they have a different set of emissions requirements that have to be satisfied also.
What speedometer is that
Trail Tech Vapor. I can recommend.
Hermit DaVlog thank you so much keep up the killer work love the Chanel
Where in Colorado
Mostly Jefferson County.
tat was a good perjury joke
Could I plate a 125cc dirtbike?
As far as I know yes. Wasn't anything in the process the checked the CC and the Honda Grom is 125cc and it has a plate.
Ok, thanks.
if the vin is clean do i still gota bug prev owner to sign a paper sayin he sold it to me.or should i jus risk getting impeached from an office pos that i dont have
Yeah you gotta have something in your hand that proves if it's not clean it's not on you.
But dont you need a lisens plate
Yes. That'd be the end result here.
lol
Those kits are for bikes that that don't come with lights or battery
can you make 2 strokes street legal in Colorado?
Yep.
Hayden Van Putten that's awesome!
Can you do this in Utah
I have no idea, but Utah seems even better than Colorado about keeping freedom legal. Maybe somebody who knows will reply.
wild rider When I lived in Utah I didn't ride yet. Brianmobil1 did a video about this least once. He installed blinker lights. I don't remember if that was required.
I thought about buying a cheap dirt bike and converting it to be street legal but it looks like a lot of work. Ill just wait for a cheap already street legal bike.
If you plan on riding road, a street bike is geared better for that purpose. Did you get one?
Should I bother trying here in New York? Cops already bother any type of motorbikes here for no reason. I got pulled over on my Grom because he said it was "too" loud. I had stock exhaust at the time, but I got off by just not being a dick.
I don't know. I know, upstate you can actually ride street legal ATVs in some parts. Maybe you just need to move to another town where freedom is still legal.
My opinion for an extra $100 you can have a full kit! From RMATV.
Florida
Man you should see the hoops we have to jump through up here, takes friggin months. When will we see a vid with that CDS fella ? And how goes the re-election for king ? And most important of all DO THESE RIDING PANTS MAKE MY BUTT LOOK FAT ?
1. Soon, we're riding tomorrow. 2. As well as can be expected. 3. Yes.
What about a mini pocket bike ???
Colorado requires a minimum seat height of 20", so if it's over that you are good. (I realize this is an older post but maybe this will help somebody else wondering the same)
So I shouldn't be watching this because I don't live in CO. and I don't want to make my dirt bike street legal, but Hermit is like crack you get addicted. The horn sounds like something from a Sci Fi movie. Are you enjoying the simple design of the air cool engine more now after riding it around for a few weeks now? I have no plans to make my 450X street legal and I don't think I ever will, but it is nice to know this information so if I ever do in the future. stay safe
I'm loving the air cooled kick starter. Must be nice to live somewhere, where stupid streets aren't always getting in the way of your dirt bike riding.
You're always welcome to come down you know. Unless you're a Russian spy like CDS. Stay safe
:-)
I live in Oregon. Can you fill out and sign a Colorado form for me and sign it so I can ride my dirt bike in Washington :-)
Probably, but I hear lots of people in other states get South Dakota plates because you can do it without going to South Dakota and then they just run and SD plate where they live. That might have changed, but it's worth looking into if freedom isn't legal in Oregon.
I've got a wr450f that I'm planning on converting to a Supermoto
