  • ColoradoDualSport a known DRZ400S fanboy rides an XR400R for the first time. This could very well be the first time CDS has ever been on a decent dirt bike. Both CDS and Hermit give observations and fist impressions of the XR400 and how it compares to the DRZ400.

    I’ve owned my XR400R3 or over 16 years now as I bought it from new. My XR has electric start, Mikuni pumper carb, revmax cdi, SRC or brace, IMS wide pegs, 1” bar risers on 7/8 renthals, multiplo handguards, rear rack, hard wired motopressor digital pump, enduristan tail pack, fender pack, it’s fully loaded & I absolutely love it 😍

    Thanks for vids Hermit, just got back into bikes and have bought a pretty tidy 2004 XR400R and getting a Mikuni pumper put on it as didn't like it's flat spot with standard carby as opened throttle although overall power wasn't bad.
    Looking forward to some fun on it. My last bike was a old 1986 Yamaha TT600 which was great fun, love the old thumpers.
    Cheers again to you and your friends, commentary is good fun and looks like you got some nice riding where you live.

    DRZ400 (which I own) is really good on trails and smoother on the highway. But if you just wanna have hooliganish amounts of fun on trails, then the XR400 is the obvious choice. The front wheel comes up much easier because there are no radiators weighing down the front of the bike, so popping wheelies to get over logs and other obstacles is a cinch. Also I find it that the back tire is more prone to sliding around corners, which makes it a ton of fun to whip around.

    DRZ 's suck! I have a crap load of money in mine and would trade it in a heartbeat to get my old 96 XR600 back. I use to think it was so heavy at its 300 lbs but just getting rid of stock exhaust you loose 20lbs. And you want a kick starter. WTF is with everyone needing a electric start? Been kick starting bikes for 50 years, it's not a big deal.

    • @HermitDaVlog
      @HermitDaVlog  Před 7 lety +2

      Pretty much preaching to the choir. DRZ is 310lbs and XR600 is 350ish. I like lighter bikes, but I want to try an XR650 and see if it wins me over.

    Those look like fun relaxing scenic roads. Ive owned several drz400s, last one was a highly modded SM I built up. Great solid bikes. I haven’t ridden in a couple years. Just picked up a mint 2001 xr400r that looked like it was never ridden. (I’m gunna plate it) There’s some fire roads that go up a mountain maybe 8 miles from my house. Don’t care about power anymore as I’m just wanting to cruise. More concerned about how hard it will be to restart when I stop for a quick break. Both are pretty much the gold standard for reliable trail bikes though.

    • @mikenelson189
      @mikenelson189 Před 5 lety

      Old post but I need to clear this up this is wrong info no way in hell your getting a drz down to 240lbs according to Suzuki website the drz400e is a porky 304 lbs wet.
      The drz400s is 319lbs wet the xr400 wet weight is 277 lbs and 256 lbs dry. So it's not close you will never get the drz400e close to the xr400 unless you take the radiators off and drain the coolant.
      My estart xr400 with kickstarter 4 gallon gas tank and a rear rack weighs 295lbs. So it's still lighter than a drz400e. And my xr has a pumper carb and uncorked so it's close to to the power of a 400E but it's lighter.

      Hermit DaVlog You were in a bathroom stall in a bar long enough to read that?

    • @ColoradoDualSport
      @ColoradoDualSport Před 7 lety

      Actually, he's right as always. He answered the question Bob G asked, not the question Hermit made up aferwords. There was no time frame given so I defaulted to the literal. Also from personal experience with game engines yes they may be able to multi thread but the never do very well. Having two cores pinned at 100% while 14 others run 3-5% I don't consider "multi-threaded" I just consider that lazy and a check in a box for marketing.

    • @HermitDaVlog
      @HermitDaVlog  Před 7 lety

      I've had more time to tune and ride but I'm still sorting out what I think of that. With such a weight difference it's hard to comment on the engines specifically because you can't tell how much is power vs power/weight, but I do like the feel of the XR more. It's not as smooth or tractable, it's it is more exciting, especially off the low end.

      Well, cool. Any bike can do any speed with the right gears, but if it only weighs 150lbs and has fence posts for forks its probably only a matter of time before you get yourself killed on an interstate.

    I dont like the DRZ at any level . It's too heavy, uncomfortable . I had one, but I have a 1990 DR350s, which my opinion is a better bike for single track riding . It's lighter. My year is only a kickstart, just a little under on power, but its torque is good, plus it has a 6speed . And no radiator, and its comfortable compare to the DRZ . You think the DRZ is better than the DR, nah? I dont think so .

  • @jameswilson9781
    @jameswilson9781 Před 7 lety +2

    That is a S model DRZ. If you had a E model it wouldn't even be a comparison.

    • @ColoradoDualSport
      @ColoradoDualSport Před 7 lety

      True, but it has E gearing.

    • @jameswilson9781
      @jameswilson9781 Před 7 lety +1

      the E model has like 5hp more stock. thats due to the FCR carb, more aggressive cams and higher compression. The gearing is a very small part of it.

      His suspension is stock and his gearing is better than stock, but you're right we need to figure out some good configurations for these bikes and do more comparison.
