    In this episode of the Quadratec Academy, Rob installs new tailgate hinges on a 97 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Chances are, if you've got an older Wrangler, your tailgate hinges are probably starting to show their age. The factory used a sealed, non-serviceable hinge and over the years moisture can make its way into the hinge pins causing corrosion which will start to make the hinges harder to open and close, make them noisey and eventually causing them to seize up completely. Fortunately, there are plenty of options when it comes to replacement tailgate hinges. The steps to install some new hinges are very hard, however, the process can be a bit frustrating because just like those hinge pins, odds are the bolts securing your hinges most likely have a good bit of corrosion on them as well. In this video, Rob will show some tips and tricks to hopefully make the process of replacing your hinges easier, helping you to get the job done so you can enjoy a quiet and smooth opening and closing tailgate once again!

    Oh man. This is coming from someone that knows ZERO about repairing cars, but recently bought my fist 04 Jeep. The satisfaction of finally getting that bolt out.. The process.. Amazing footage!

    if and when I get my hinges off if there is bare metal showing I think I will sand it and paint it first before putting the hinges on... thanks for the vid..

    Mine was just like that and the forums said to spray them with PB Blaster. I did that and worked it back and forth, added more blaster, then worked it. I did that for about half hour and it was substantially better. Did it again the next day and the tailgate worked like new. I didn’t have to remove the tailgate nor the hinges, just sprayed it while it was on the Jeep. Keep a puddle of blaster on top of the hinge pin and swing the gate open/closed back and forth for a good little while.

    Hand tool or a ratchet will give you a better feel so you don’t round out your torx but even then if there really corroded . The only sure fire way is to weld a bit right to the torx and they will come right out easy. It’s worth the extra few bucks to buy a new torx bit or two . Time is money and a welder should be in your garage if you like doing your own work. Their cheap at harbor freight and get the job done .

    I’m not going to try to do it myself without watching a video first anymore, the minute he said “you really don’t want to use a t20 socket set” my heart broke I tried without even thinking and immediately the head striped all the points at once. At least I know I and tap it out with a flat head

    Looks like the Manufacture did the body painting after all the hinges Installed. What a quality paint Job ??? It is a shamed engineering..

    Next time try using an Air Hammer with a Shake-N-Break tool. Also Mayhew makes a decent Bolt Breaker for air hammers. Both of which are IDEAL for this scenario. P.S. Liquid Wrench or Kroil are hands down better than PB Blaster.

    If you can please show a 5th tire solution for the 2020 gladiator located on tailgate with the similar function of a keep spare tire

    I think it would be easier to drill a hole in the hinge, add a zerk fitting, then pump in some grease.

    I have a giant old dewalt 1/2 impact, would that be too much power/torque?

    I tried everything - torch, impact, various screw extractors,- and had to drill out every 8 of the bolts.

    Hey there! I see you have a lot of followers and this is an old video so idk if you will reply but I have a question. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and am trying to undo the bolts on the hinges so I can add a flag holder, but they aren’t moving. Am I able to take them off with this new of a model or are they fake?

      They get worse than just being squeaky. The tailgate eventually becomes very difficult to open and shut.

    There's a better way than this I found. I opened my 1997 Jeep tailgate as wide as a I could and drilled 2 holes that went right to the pin. Another CZcamsr showed me a video and he started off with a sharp metal punch, then drilled the holes....top and bottom. I skipped the "punch part" and was able to drill 2 holes that went in as far as the pins. The drill holes aren't very large....just big enough to use the spray tube to spray in penatrating and/or three in one oil to squirt in and lubricate the holes....top and bottom. The gate swings easily now. No noise at all and none of the hard work seen in this video but you can take your choice I suppose. The two holes are hidden once the gate is closed and no more creaking noises with the gate. Swings open like it's brand new.

    Just lubricate them top and bottom, the lubricant will work its way in.

    My wife is a postal employee. Her and 5 other's own Jeeps tj's and jk's. You'll replace many parts, all the time!! CHRYSLER JUNK.. BUY a Toyota...

    1:56 Let's be honest. The hinges degrade because Jeep uses low-quality components and the vehicles are poorly built. I should know, I own two of them. If Jeep was owned by Honda, or Toyota, or any Asian car company, the build quality would be better.
