    Lead foot iron fist is a good book to read on how the 03/04 development process happened. It highlights the good, the bad , and the ugly. It also talks about how they brought these aftermarket company and turning them in to OEM's for ford and eventually the big 3.

    The terminator came out mid 2002 as an early 2003. It was supposed to be the 2002 model but they just didnt get it out in time. What made the terminator great was factory forged rods and pistons that enabled 1000 rwhp capability on the stock engine...the previous cobras all had forged cranks too all they need is forged rods and pistons and they can do 1000+ rwhp too.

    This is a double edge sword, I hate GM and I am happy the Camaro fails but on the other side the Camaro makes Ford non complacent and drives Ford to make a better car. This is the main reason the S650 is a flop and not tunable (no need because no competition)

    • @midnight347
      @midnight347 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I agree with that. They really got lazy with the s650 it blows my mind the fanboys still jerking off over it they just ignore all its faults and say "they'll figure it out" when it comes to tuning. Ppl are asleep on this.

    Maybe the Cobra was the final nail in the coffin for Camaro. But the writing was on the wall well before that. The fact that sales dropped 10% on the Camaro the year the LS1 was introduced (1998) and then dropped 20% the year after had to tell GM they just didn't have the recipe right. And then Ford sells over 200k Mustangs in 2000 compared to Camaro's 40k. Whoever was product manager for Camaro must've been looking for a tall window to jump out of. Termi was just the merciful coupe de grace.

    I’ve had this debate before with a lot with GM nuthuggers. They refuse to understand it probably because they have zero clue about business, profit margins, and competition in said market. I’d argue Ford at the time of planning the 03/04 Cobra they had their eyes on Corvettes as the competitor. It was a huge chest bump to GM from Ford.

      People that weren't there don't realize just how badass the 03 cobra was. It was mind boggling for the money spent what you got. Today 800-1000 rwhp capability is fairly common on stock performance engines. In 2003 it was FAR from common it was almost unheard of especially for an American muscle car at its price point.

    From what I remember the press reports of the time, the Camaro and Firebird was expected to go out of production after the '99 model year. But the LS1 kinda gave sales a shot in the arm, and GM held out for a couple more years, but Was still out sold by the Mustang.Then as you said, GM threw in the towel after they heard what Ford was cookin with the Terminator ...

    • @ChurchAutoTest
      @ChurchAutoTest Před 2 měsíci

      Kinda what I thought but someone else posted sales dropped with the LS1. I found that hard to believe, but damn, they did. That generation of F-body was just meh.

    • @midnight347
      @midnight347 Před 2 měsíci

      @ChurchAutoTest they were ugly i think and basically garbage outside of the engine and trans. Those were really good everything else was bad. The ta looked better imo but same applies to it. I think sn95 (94-04) mustang looks alot better especially modded just right with the right stance.

      Firebird is Pontiac. If there's no Pontiac there's no firebird

    I agree. Cobra killed the catfish. Just the fact GM was not evolving the Camaro Ford made it clear that good things were in the horizon. Then with Camaro gone we get the 3V. Took 7 more years to get the Coyote.

    • @midnight347
      @midnight347 Před 2 měsíci

      The 3v really wasn't bad though. Everyone rags on it now because it's the popular thing to do it wasn't that bad in 2005. If camaro had stayed we likely would have got a 350 hp 4v but I mean the 300 hp 3v wasn't THAT bad. All aluminum with vct they had good torque and power curve and responded well to mods. It was a big step up from the outgoing 2004 2v gt. What Ford did with the 2024 mustang is way worse than what they did with the 2005 but the s650 gets a pass for some reason lol. It's not even tunable! You get an s550 2.0 with ugly non integrated screens and a locked ecu for alot more money. Complete shit

    • @bradbradley353
      @bradbradley353 Před 2 měsíci

      @@midnight347 Agreed the 3V was not a bad engine at all. but with the Camaro gone ford was not under any real pressure to continue 4v development at that time. Maybe that was best. Coyote emerges 1 year after Camaro came back…ford had to be working on it before 2010.

    Alex, I agree. Cobra killed the Camaro. GM is always slow to change. Look at the Pontiac Fiero. They finally make it right and then discontinued. The Camaro followed the Mustang. Now the Mustang is the only Pony car left.

    Ford has always done more with less displacement than chevy over the years, even back to the 289 days Ford performance was giving the 327's a run back then... Look I'm not Rah Rah Ford, I've had chevy's and ford's over the years.. Ford seems to have better engineer's to me.. And don't get me wrong I like the Camaro's up till about 2018ish as far as looks. And their NA power is nasty. But Ford give's you more for less money flat out and once boost is thrown into it, the Coyote shines.. I can remember like it was yesterday, 1988, I was 16 in my boy's all white 5.0 Foxbody. He was beating everything within 3 town's back then.. He changed the gearing and got rim's and sticky comp back tires and he was killing the Iroc Z 350's, Vette's of the time period too.. The 305's were nothing and only the manual camaro's were kind of fast with work they were back then.. There was no OBD2 ports either which is great these days and you needed to know how to bang gears back then too.. It was a different time the cars didn't make crazy power like we see now but man it was a fun time! And street racing wasn't looked at like it is these days.. Back then it would be maybe 4 cars with some friends on a back road where no one lived safely. Plus back then young kid's were getting 250 HP cars not 450 to 750 hp right from the dealer..
