She passed away at 28 June 2020.
She is well known as the Mother of the Nightwish Army.
It was her Favorite Song.

The tone in floor's voice during the "piano black" parts is stunning. I can listen to that section all day.
Great reaction! This is one of the unique songs of Nightwish, immensely beloved. Stands out for it's extreme symbiosis of the opposites, fragile and powerful, quiet and explosive, dream and despair. A Song that is honest about Life. The breakdown parts are unbelievable, such beauty in a borderline musical chaos, such loss of predictability.
My favorite song from this fantastic concert. You mentioned how dramatic it is. That's a good way to put it. It is just so epic with all the drama and orchestration and the background choir. And so many cool little nuggets, like after Marko did that note bend you talked about, he began the verse before smoothly handing it over to Floor without an obvious transition. And those little breaks with the keys. That ending that got you (and has gotten other reactors!). And, of course, Floor and Marko both sound amazing.
You also talked about the energy. This was the 14th of 15 songs in their set, immediately following "Ghost Love Score" (!). And the next and last song ("Last Ride of the Day") is arguably even more energetic (albeit much shorter). Just an amazing song in an amazing concert.

Hi Nina, this song alaways makes me sad because it was Ann Waychoff's favourite song. There is a version of this which mashes-up this live performance with the 'Love' movement (not performed here) but included in the album version. Once you watch it, you will understand why it was inappropriate to play 'live'. Once again, your musical knowledge on song construction is a joy to behold. Thank you. Kindest, from Wiltshire.

This was one of the songs I didn’t like much when I first started listening to Nightwish, it felt chaotic and I just didn’t get it. After listening to them a lot for a couple of months I started to re listen 🎧 the songs I didn’t enjoy in the beginning and now this is one of my favourites ❤️🔥 guess listening to Nightwish for a while has re- wired my brain and ears for the better
Song of Myself is definitely in my top 5... Absolutely beautiful. That really pretty high chord (I believe it's a B flat - help?) is just stunning. The whole song is just yet another demonstration of how bloody good Marco and Floor were together... I miss Marco! By the way, Nina, don't let the poll result fool you... the reason Poet and the Pendulum didn't come out on top is because everyone knows it's still a little too soon for you.... it's a piece of art created by a genius (remember to do background research before listening to that one - it really helps). Lovely reaction Nina... it's great you had an ear for those little orchestrations going on in the background (e.g. those "twinkly chromatics"). Please don't leave it so long till your next Nightwish reaction... I love watching them 😊

The song was the climax of the ‘Imaginarium’ concept album, originally with vocals by Anette Olson. The song also featured several minutes of spoken word poetry at the end. In this live performance, you can catch glimpses of that poetry on the screens behind the band.
It is a catchy track, full of surprises and it made me jump in parts. Must be tricky to perform. Vocals are so powerful. That is a good track to react to.
It is A Tribute to the poem in 52 chapters, One for every week of the year, " Song of myself " by Walt Whitman 1819-1892.(one of the co-founders of US poetry). The 7th line of the song is ""Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride""". The extended official studio version of this song has, at the end, a poem as a tribute to Whitman made by Tuomas, the keyboard player and the mastermind of nightwish. These lines you can also see fast flahing on the ledscreen of the video you just saw.

So glad to see you back with Nightwish again. I always appreciate your in depth and knowledgeable analysis. This is one of my three favorite Nightwish songs. The second is "Endlessness" and it breaks my heart that we will never hear that one live. The third? All the rest of the songs. This one is special for so many reasons. Jukka beating those drums into submission. Emppu watching him in awe. Marko singing along totally off mike, then, later slow marching across the stage in time to the music, Floor stalking the mike (it doesn't stand a chance) and, above it all Tuomos's magnificent arrangement and playing. I don't care how many times I watch and listen to this, I always find something new. The level of professionalism and the joy that this band exhibit is beyond compare.
Now you're just spoiling us. So much more Nightwish to experience, I'm so glad your reacting to them again 🤗

Dark, mysterious, something personal from Tuomas that, yet again, to be left open to interpretation of the listener. Young lady, you are such a joy to watch and listen to. This is just another masterful composition and performance from possibly the most amazing concert that was thankfully recorded so perfectly, by, in my opinion, the best of the Symphonic Metal groups...period. And that's not taking anything away from the other amazing groups in this genre but nobody does composition like Tuomas and there is not another voice like Floor's. I love your reactions and I usually learn something and your smile is infectious and along with the music just makes an old man feel almost young again. Thank You.
Great Reaction! Toumas (Keyboard Player) formed this band originally and he is the main songwriter and is a genius song writer at that! We all know that Floor can sing really high and really powerfully, but what I love most when she sings is when she sings in her lower register. She doesn't get to sing down there much, but when she does it is so awesome!

Hi Nina, always great to see how you really react tt entire performance to the finest detail. As to your 15:00 question abt these interesting lyrics and what they might mean: "Sometimes the within is piano black / Piano black over cleansing waters". Very broadly speaking, whether it's the sky or the within, the constant factor's the cleansing waters, i.e. death and the associated tranquillity/liberation.
To me personally, the nxt line belongs with it. "All that great heart lying still and slowly dying". For a full two and a half hour stretch before my wife died in my arms at 42yrs of age, her heart slowly dying in sync with her final & ever fainter breaths, the within was pitch black as it came out in waves. My mother and I were taking care of her in my parents' home. My father had been a gp, so the place had all the right end of care backup which included his colleagues i.e. friends of the family.

(2/2).. Right before the piano black h3ll on earth started, all had seemed peaceful as I was reading to her from our favourite book, a famous English evergreen by "BB" we had translated into Dutch. Just trying to ease her unconscious mind, like we both did for my father the year before, when he was being held in a coma in hospital. Suddenly, the waves of piano black vomit came from within and all we could do was keep her in the right position and apply the "cleansing waters". Then the waves stopped and soon after that, her life.
There's a still well-known novel in Dutch, titled: "Van De Koele Meren Des Doods" (transl: abt the cool lakes of death). Whenever Tuomas writes about anything dark & aquatic, I'm reminded of it.
Quite dark a comment to end with my usual "Cheers from Amsterdam", but nevertheless there you go. Ty for a wonderful reaction 🖤🤘

This is in my top 3 of Nightwish songs for so many reasons. I love Floor singing in the low range like that. Her tone quality is so full. Floor and Marko singing together is always a plus. That slide that Marko does sounds so good. The change from the first half of the song to the heaviness of the 2nd half. Then the ending with Floor in her upper range and supported by Marko. The 2nd hit looks so cool the way Floor stands there and throws her head hands back. Kudos to the videographer for capturing that.
I noticed you fell into the trap a couple of times expecting one thing but Nightwish did something else. Their habit of not being predictable is just one more aspect that makes this band great, and Tuomas’ composing. You were correct about the beginning sections in 7/4.

Yes, I think the first time I heard it the ending caught me out. Now it is the anticipation of the end that has me hanging (and I still get it wrong sometimes)

Favorite song of the late Ann Waychoff, the Mother of the Nightwish Army. 🕯
This is inspired by the 19th century 52 chapter poem of the same name by Walt Whitman, one of Tuomas' favorite poets. There is a spoken poem section at the end of the studio version, written by Tuomas in an ode to the original, and is voiced by friends and family of the band. The poem's words are what you see on the big screen behind the band. This was song #14 of 15 here, right after Ghost Love Score. It is the last track on the Imaginaerum album, which has themes of imagination and fantasy.

No 2 in my favourites list.
Marco is superb - I love his second entry (the rising gliss) so much I extracted it and have it as my ringtone.
Favourite parts:
Piano Black , and particularly the best description of depression I've heard - "sometimes the within is piano black". Piano black - that deep glossy black that almost evades the eye.
Emppu holding that long note one-handed as he drinks a Corona.
The unexpected pauses (rests) towards the end, particularly, in this performance, when Floor turns her hands upwards and the flames seem to come from her palms.
Great chuggy rhythms in the breakdown.
Little pizzicato string sections in the run-up to that ending.
At the end the lead vocals use the same lyrics as the choir are singing in the earlier parts -
"All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing". That lyric is perfect for the staccato rhythm.

Forgot to mention - Floors low register is my favourite part of her range, so velvety.
Until further notice there will be no more gigs with Nightwish. The next album is the end of a triology. The tour will not take place. There are no other plans. We'll have to see if Tuomas wants to tell us something new in a few years. So far it has always been like this.
The fact that it sounds like film music is particularly fitting here. It is part of the soundtrack to the film Imaginaerum. The main character tries to write down for his daughter what he always wanted to say but never said. But he suffers from dementia and forgets more and more. The film premieres shortly after Anette and the band split up. Floor sits in the first row instead of Anette and watches Anette in the film. The longer version is followed by a collection of quotes that are only available in the studio version. Only Tuomas knows what the quotes mean.
At the same time, it is a homage to the American poet Walt Whitman, whose poem of the same name describes a year in a person's life.
It's one of my favorite tracks. Not just Nightwish, in general 🙂

As a segway to your nightwish journey may i suggest the following ; Ayreon Universe Live which feautures Marko , Floor and Floors sister Irene alongside a collaboration of the best metal vocalists in the world. Ayreon is the brainchild of Arjen Lucassen, the Dutch metal equivalent of Tuomas from nightwish.
Another dutch symphinic metal band that has featured both Floor and Marko is Delain,sorta of a more contemporary versiion Nightwish with more mainstream appeal.
Finally, if no-one has previously mentioned, Floors husband is the current drummer with swedish metal band Sabaton. The lead guitarist from Sabaton ,Tommy Johansson has played on some of Floor's epic cover songs. In addition to being an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist ,he is also an amazing voclist, specialising in doing metal covers of classic rock/pop songs. Among his covers are, Farnsy's - You're the Voice, Sounds of Silence and one of your favourites, The pHantom of the Opera in which he performs both the male and females vocals. A treasure for your ears!

One interesting bit of trivia: Klause Bedelt collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean. Hans Zimmer is one of Tuomas's favorite composers and a big influence on his music. In fact, the "From Wishes to Eternity" live show from the year 2000 contains a song called ""Crimson Tide/Deep Blue Sea", which is a symphonic metal instrumental featuring themes from the classical score composed by Hans Zimmer for the 1995 movie "Crimson Tide".

Love this song! Just imagine the lyrics like a road trip inside your own head, figuring out who you really are. It's all about accepting the good and the not-so-great parts, and realizing how everything is kinda connected in this big life adventure. The song basically nudges you to think about yourself and dive deep into what makes you, well, you!

Cool story, and great reaction as usual! This is almost the last song on the _Imaginaerum_ album, which is a kind of concept album and greater than the sum of its parts - one way of interpreting it is as an old man looking back on his life, and a lot of the lyrics here refer back to songs earlier on the album. I don't believe you can really grasp it lyrically on its own. This is not the whole song, but it is the part that makes sense to perform live - after this is a poem read by the friends and family of Nightwish (a tribute to Walt Whitman's poem of the same name). RIP Ann.
At some point I recommend listening to the album. It's Anette not Floor and she's a very different singer; Floor has a habit of adding stunning endings to songs which make them her own, like the operatic bit here, and anything rocky she rules, but there are places where I prefer Anette, actually including the beginning of this song ("catnap in the ghost town of your heart"). Then, when you've heard the album, watch the movie...
One of my favorites! Floors voice makes me picture a beam of sunlight cutting through dark clouds.

This is a song that makes you look back at your life and think: “Did I do the right thing?”
The Nightwish keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen was inspired by his favorite poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) and his famous free verse poem of the same name. The song (on the album) includes a six-minute reading of a transcendentalist poem. Tuomas explained to Metal Hammer magazine, “I wanted to pay tribute to him and write the lyrics the way he might have written. It’s a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis, especially the oral part.”

Something technical that I noticed. When you stop the playback, it's not the abrupt silence every one else gets. You can hear the volume fade away over the course of a few milliseconds. It's more satisfying to me. 👍

Hello Nina, the studio version of this thirteen and a half minute track is divided into four parts and was inspired by Nightwish keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen's favorite poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892), and his famous free verse poem of the same name. The studio song includes Part IV (Love) a six-minute recitation of the Transcendentalist poem, which will never performed live. He explained to Metal Hammer magazine: "I wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part." :

Walt Whitman (May 31, 1819 - March 26th, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.
A cardinal point in the lyrics is: “The nightingale is still locked in the cage”. Since the nightingale is a songbird, it should be free, not caged. Here is a clear hint to the artist as a poet and music lover. References to relevant songs are made: "Storytime", "Ghost River" and "Dead Boy's Poem". The writer is still stuck by the old systems: you have to study and then make a career. Making music as a hobby is okay, but not as a job. Struggling with growing up and letting go of your childhood ideals. Having to leave your fantasy world behind you, while you would love to cherish it. “Piano black over cleansing waters”, and “Resting keys without a door”. Several references to things that work against the musician in him and how it makes him sad. “All that big heart lying still and slowly dying” in the system. Live your life according to other’s expectations until it is finnaly over. A boring ending for an inspired artist.
Finally, I would like to note that the text of Part IV was projected onto the video wall behind the stage. Especially the last sentence of the poem is clearly legible in the closing images of this video: "And there forever remains that change from G “key of benediction”to E minor" = G Em, the name of the daughter of the main character (Tuomas) in the movie: Gem. in this context expressing the LOVE for his daughter and life in general. G major versus E minor, represent the (classic) cheerfulness of the wonderful past, versus the dreary (metal) of the present.
Imaginaerum (also promoted as Imaginaerum by Nightwish) is a 2012 fantasy film co-written and directed by Stobe Harju. It was developed with and features music from Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish's seventh studio album of the same name; Nightwish's keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen co-wrote the film. Love LOVE your harmonic and theory abilities!! And of course that you Dig Nightwish and the mighty Floor Jansen! I just don't think there is another band in any genre that is this interesting and intelligent, as well a singer that is technically so well armed as Floor! She literally can do it ALL,..... effortlessly, but more importantly to me, she does it authentically, meaning she always sounds like Floor. Not a singer flipping between styles, ...... Its like no matter what she does, she's the OG.

This song is heavily influenced by the Walt Whitman's (long) poem by the same title. The album version (and some fan made video versions) contaned a narrated poetic portion.
Anyway, this Wacken 2013 live performance is almost beyond spectacular. And sometimes the sky really is piano black. ⛄👍

You should check out "Song of the Siren" by Bridge City Sinners. They have an incredibly unique sound, and their singer Libby Lux has a very distinctive voice.
