The Dutch Square, also known as the Red Square or Stadthuys Square, is a historic square located in the heart of Melaka City, Malaysia. It is named after the prominent red buildings that dominate the area and reflect the Dutch colonial architectural style.
The centerpiece of the Dutch Square is the Stadthuys, which is the oldest Dutch building in the East Indies and serves as the historical museum of Melaka. The Stadthuys was built between 1641 and 1660 and was originally the administrative center of the Dutch colonial government. Today, it houses exhibits and artifacts that showcase the history and heritage of Melaka.
Adjacent to the Stadthuys is the Christ Church, a distinctive red-colored church that was built in 1753. The church is one of the oldest functioning Protestant churches in Malaysia. Its architecture exhibits a unique blend of Dutch and colonial influences. The interior of the church features beautiful handmade pews, a classic pipe organ, and remarkable stained glass windows.
These are a must-visit destination for those interested in experiencing the cultural and architectural legacy of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In addition to the Stadthuys and Christ Church, the Dutch Square is also home to other notable attractions. These include the Queen Victoria Fountain, a Victorian-style fountain commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, an ornate clock tower that adds to the charm of the area.
