  • I might have read the best book of 2024 so far: Ann Napolitano's Hello Beautiful - this was an homage to Little Women (and obviously I had remembered correctly but didn't trust myself) and it was told beautifully. I will have to reread this book at some point to ensure I absorb all the little details. Let's check my weekly journal and start working on it now. I'm sharing the Extravagant Hope Mailer for May and gathering the items I want to include in my spread. After my Snippets video talking about the CZcams comment that got under my skin, I kept thinking about my own comments I leave on CZcams and have decided to only leave positive comments from now on. I'll share the reasons for this in my video. Thank you so much for your time!

    I really like how you are evaluating your comments and deciding not to say things that while they are not mean or inappropriate, they are also unnecessary (& may diminish the readers experience). AND How you know you can judge - internally!

    Thank you for sharing this! The strange thing about social media is that we open ourselves up to all sorts of comments and criticisms, but there are many who feel entitled or feel that their opinions need to be heard. I personally will not comment on a video unless absolutely necessary. And when I do leave comments, it is to be positive and praise the person. I have come across many videos where people are mispronouncing the name of a brand or pen or ink but unless they ask for advice, I won’t give it.
    Thank you for all that you bring to this community!

      Duly noted. As you may recall, I am one of the people who is guilty of mentioning mispronunciations, but I would definitely do it privately if there were an easy way to message the creator privately. I think pronunciation is an edge case because this hobby causes all of us to use languages we dont really know, and that does offend some people. (An example: I've seen so many threads in which French speakers are bothered by the way Americans pronounce "Chartres Blue" when referring to the popular Platinum 3776.) Proper pronunciation can be a form of respect, and mispronunciations can feel like microaggressions (or so some of my immigrant friends tell me...they say it increases their sense of not belonging). I like it when creators either research the pronunciation or at least say, "I apologize if I'm not saying this correctly." But based on your comments, I will rethink my approach and avoid such comments. If I find the number of mispronunciations difficult for me personally, it's my choice to stop following.

      @@marilyngardner4269 I know you're coming at it from a good place. There are some creators who don't apologize for their mispronunciations but instead say, "I'm going to mispronounce it so whatever," without any inclination to try improve. I'm open to the advice if I am asking for it. I think that's like with anything in life - if people ask for advice, I will be cautious when giving it. Because even when they ask, the advice may not always be taken the way we think it will be.

      @@marilyngardner4269 I completely understand this, I think that if you haven’t been on the receiving end of hearing your language being mispronounced, then it’s hard to empathize or understand those feelings. Whenever someone corrects my pronunciation, I go do a double check to make sure I can hear it pronounced as it should and that it matches up with the comment. Then from there, I’ll work on saying it the correct way as long as it’s phonetically doable for me lol, which usually just takes time. But I know in my language, there are some phonetics that no other tongue can seem to replicate, so if someone is trying, I appreciate it and have no reason to feel offended with it. I do greatly appreciate those that give me the correct pronunciation, but I can also see how those comments can come off “as a matter of fact” rather than supportive and teaching if it’s worded very bluntly. It’s up to the content creator to interpret the correction but if we’re going to correct others, I think it’s also good to be mindful of how we teach our fellow creators so they know we’re here to support their learning of foreign and new languages!

      @marilyngardner4269 Před měsícem +1

      @@KenchanKrafts People can get very thin-skinned and think they are being criticized when that is not the intent of the commentor. It's unfortunate. My own hyper-awareness is heightened because I work in employee communications for a very large organization (24,000 employees) who represent a diverse mix of languages and cultures. I have learned from that how much it can mean when someone has the respect to try to say things properly or at least ask for clarification. A small anecdote I will never forget: In June of 2022, I broke my neck and my wrist..I was back at my computer working the next day but didn't tell most of my colleagues what happened. I sent an email to one of my Tibetan colleagues and accidentally spelled his name wrong in the salutation. Probably because I wasn't thinking straight, but I'm sure the unfamiliar-to-me spelling was a factor in my gaffe. His boss, who was copied on the email, jumped all over me about the misspelling. This is how important these things are where I work. So it's just something I notice -- can't help it. I think it's fine to make mistakes as long as one is trying to learn and deminstrates respect for others. There are definitely challenges in the fountain pen hobby, given that both the products and the audiences are international. I am finding it a great opportunity to learn new things!

    • @seemownay
      @seemownay  Před měsícem +1

      I have watched some creators who just seem to have such difficulties in pronunciation. And I have come to the conclusion that it can't be unwillingness to say things correctly, but that there are other issues at play that I just don't know of. So I'm keeping my mouth shut.

    27:08 I love your thoughtful treatment of the topic of comments and I totally agree with you. Why rain on someone’s parade? Sometimes I’ll specifically ask for opinions on pens or inks or even the way I am making videos because I want all sides of someone’s experience. But if I got a new pen and was super excited about it and didn’t ask it would dampen my joy a little to have “negative “ comments about it

    I like what you said about comments. I don't think I've said any negative comments, but I am guilty of giving unsolicited advice. I get what you are trying to say about the pens. My only FP from a known and loved brand is a Pilot Kakuno, other than this particular one i have a bunch of chinese ones. I heard from so many people so many bad things about both of those pens... where i live(Brazil) FP arent a thing at all... and only recently stationery brands like Pilot started selling, which is why i have a kakuno, and just to add to it, its definitelly not a cheap option like it is in other places, and i'm not going to spend a ton of money trying to import a pen and having to deal with the currency exchange, shipping and importing taxes... Am i not allowed to be part of the fun of using a FP because i have a cheap one? I always get a lil bit sad when i see a creator with that kind of behavior

    I am training myself to simply stop watching CZcamsrs whose content I find triggering in some way, rather than offering them feedback. I would be willing to offer feedback in a private setting if asked, but I usually don't have a way to do that. In the instances where I have offered feedback, I notice it is not usually received well and the response is defensive. So now I understand that content creators have a right to do what they want and it is my option not to watch. Most don't really want feedback, even if it is delivered in a tone that is not negative..

    The comments can not only be for the benefit of the creator but also for the other viewers, the creator's community. If an item has legitimate issues, it is okay imo to nicely bring those up to help those folk in their own future purchasing choices. Limiting input to positive only, while temporarily comforting, is putting blinders on and hampering critical thinking in considering things like quality control or even suitability for different types of writing styles or product usages.

    • @marilyngardner4269
      @marilyngardner4269 Před měsícem +2

      I agree with this. Comments are sometimes directed to the entire community and not to the CZcamsr specifically, and the intent may be to be helpful. Unfortunately, these can be perceived as negative and/or as a direct criticism of the CZcamsr. We've all seen comments on some social media posts in which total strangers say horrible things to each other, so maybe everyone is just expecting the worst intentions when people comment now. Personally, I enjoy hearing candid perspectives as long as they are delivered with civility. But I'm not a content creator, and maybe I'd take these conments more personally if it was my hard work and content.

    • @seemownay

      As you know I mostly (if not always) talk without a script and this aspect is one I had not considered at all. And this is an argument that I can get behind. Of course, I would love to hear someone say that their writing angle is completely different and so this pen/nib doesn't work for them. Or they often rotate their pen and therefore they have a lot of trouble writing with italic nibs. I was talking about comments like: I hate this color. This pen isn't special. I appreciate you for bringing this up!
