If humans return to earth he will have no purpose and will ultimately be forgotten. However, he only thinks he has no more purpose in life because he does not understand how to make his own. This is why he was so desperate to stop humans from returning to earth. However, WALL-E is the direct opposite of this. He evolved beyond his directive in the pursuit of satisfaction and made his own purpose, much like humans do. We tell ourselves who we want to be, not the role we were given from birth. This is best empathized when the captain says “I don’t want to survive, I want to live!” WALL-E wants to live while AUTO wants to survive. In that way he is the perfect antagonist of the film as his entire character conflicts with the core theme of the movie: evolving beyond the directive given to you in order to make your own.
I love everyone insisting there's more to Auto than just following orders. He's literally a hunk of hardware acting out his programming. "Follow Orders" So yes, he's going to follow orders to the letter.
@kormannn1 There's a difference here. The people could choose to disregard awful orders because they can recognize them as such. An AI wouldn't be able to ignore an order, and wouldn't care about the morality of it if it could. Think of it this way, your oven doesn't care if it's baking delicious, delicious banana bread, or it's owner's ex's cat. All it needs to know is that it's dial was turned on.
fun fact: the voice for AUTO is one of the mac text-to-speech voices named Ralph. now normally ralph does not sound that monotone, and in fact has more emotion. the way to achieve the monotone effect would be to use apples "Repeat after me" software, in there you can edit the voice.
something i just noticed is that the first time he breaks out of monotone is when he says "i insist you give me the plant" and its giving me chills like his voice suddenly becomes emotional once it gets serious

Well, in reality he used that message as an excuse to have control over human and robotic assistane (whose were more wise than we think considering the actions we see in the WALL-A, MO and BURN-E) because the order was to keep humanity in the ship because life was not sustainable on earth anymore, being the plant the perfect evidence that the order wasn't needed now.

the fact that auto never acted out of malice he just followed his orders, the only reason he was a villain was because his directive simply apposed the protagonist and since he has no emotions he can't change his mind and he just does his tasks in the most cold calculated efficient manner even if it meant destroying other robots the only thing he couldn't do was kill a human or go against his orders
