The day of Ugadi is also celebrated as victory day of Maharaja Vikramaditya of Ujjain over the Shaka invaders, thereby beginning the calendar Vikram Samvat which started in 57 BC ( the people of Gujarat celebrate Vikram samvat new year on the day after Diwali).
The festival of Ugadi also marks the coronation of dharmaraj Yudhishthir after his victory in the Mahabharata war.
Ugadi also marks the beginning of the nine day Vasant Navratri festivities and during these nine days nine forms of Goddess Durga are venerated.
The day of Ugadi is also the foundation day of Arya Samaj by Dayanand Saraswati ji.
Ugadi is observed as Cheti Chand by the Sindhi community in honor of Baba Jhulelal
