    I think one factor you forgot to mention is that type specific Immunities would now be even more prevalent defensively and giving Pokémon like Klefki the Ghost/Steel/Fairy type gives it not only 4 immunities but also makes it have the ability to not be trapped by trapping moves and abilities. By giving triple types you risk a lot of Pokémon not only having more offenses but having more niche immunities like immunity to Powder moves, immunity to prankster, immunity to Burn/Poison/Paralysis, trapping moves. It’s already one thing to know all the intricacies of the current types like Ice types being immune to Sheer Cold and Freeze, but now having to balance Sheer Cold immunity with anti-trapping and prankster immunity is a lot more information to manage.

      Side note: IMO making dark types immune to prankster feels like a lazy way to nerf the ability, it doesn't really add strategic depth in an interesting way and feels more like just a bonus instead of something you can plan around. Infinite PP would actually effect certain moves as now Charizard can spam infinite amount of Max Flare Blast Burns without drawback and while rare there are instances where you want to play around said scenario if need be (not recommended since it’s Charizard but hey if you can stall out 8 Blast Burns then you’re at least removing its strongest stab).

      What I would be really interested in would be a Light type. I've seen people argue against a Light type, saying that Normal/Psychic/Fairy is basically already the "Light" type. I argue instead of thinking in terms of moves like Flash and Moonblast, convential light, make the Light type the Angel or Holy type. Pokemon doesn't have any conventional angels or holy figures outside of Arceus so I think it would make a really compelling type!

    As for the complications of STAB, the one way they could balance it would be if STAB got weaker the more types a Pokemon has. For example, 1.6x for monotypes, 1.3x for dual types, and 1.2x for triple types.

    • @rattle_me_bones

      @aldoushuxley5953 Před 2 lety +11

      Every single one of his arguments can be countered with the following implementation:
      Make a held item (??? stone), that gives you an additional type when your Pokemon is holding it. Only once on each team, like Z moves or mega stones.
      So Gyarados + Dragon Stone = Water/Flying/Dragon
      Won't have OP boost of triple STAB + Choice item, just triple STAB and better resistances, won't have 8x weaknesses (unless the player chooses to have that), won't be hard to design, you don't need new forms, just indicate the item with a recolour (Charizard + Dragon Stone = some purple elements/ purple particles around it)

      I think it is likely that this will be the new gimmick, since the gimmicks are usually "teased" first.
      So for example the gems in gen 5, and then Z crystals in gen 7.
      We have the moves Halloween and Forest Curse, which add the ghost or grass type, and the ability steelworker, which adds stab to steel moves (but not the steel resistances)
      I kind of feel like this has all be implemented, to see if third types are necessarily OP...

    I think an interesting way to balance tri-typing is to slowly weaken stab moves based on the number of types.
    1 Type: +50% Stab
    2 Types: +40% Stab
    3 Types: +30% Stab
    This makes it where you trade power for coverage. This balance allows for single types to be the strongest in their stab moves, and might allow for an interesting change in the meta.

      @dracoblizzard7944 Před 2 lety +45

    I think one of the best way to implement a "third" typing would be this:
    - Make the third typing into a item.
    - Any pokemon holding this item gets that typing, including STAB and weaknesses.
    - Everytime a pokemon with that item appears it says "pokemon is now also x type"
    - You can knock off to remove the item + typing
    - You can fling your item to make the target into that typing until they change out. (overrides their current type item if they had any)
    - You can trick your item to change both yours and the enemys typing.
    And since its a item, you have to debate between "do I want more power with power orb/survability with leftovers or do I want to be more versitile in my STAB/Resists?"
    It would at least be the most interesting way to do things

      To quote the insurgence FAQ:
      "This game is not a ROM hack, it has been created on its own using RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials. It is an .exe file, like most PC-based video games. This means that you don't need any extra programs to run it, and that it won't necessarily run on all platforms that can run ROM hacks."

    Nice video, but I think we all knew going into this topic that it's not a viable option for a few key reason which you naturally covered.
    The more palatable game changer, in my opinion, would be dual-type moves. So, for example, fire punch would be fire/fighting type, scald fire/water type, etc.
    That would bring a new tactical layer to movesets without overcomplicating the battle mechanics, I think.

    I’d be curious how it would function if a third type were added, but in such a way that all multipliers for it are reduced. Like, a Pokemon’s tertiary type only changes weaknesses/resistances by 1.5x, and it’s STAB is only a 1.2x boost or something. The third type is still relevant like this, but inherently nerfed compared to the primary two types
