More otocinclus eggs on the way!
Hope youre still having success breeding these! I just started and currently have about 7 fry ! I am super excited!
Not sure if you have heard of this product before as it is marketed as shrimp food, but check out Bacter ae from a company called Glas Garten. It’s basically powdered biofilm with beneficial bacteria and microorganisms. It dramatically increases survival rates for baby shrimp because it ensures that biofilm can be found through out the tank and it makes up the bulk of their diet in nature. It would certainly make sure there is enough for the baby Otos to readily graze on as well. I got my Otos only a few weeks ago, and they will eat the brown diatomaceous algae but ignore other kinds. They ignore hikari algae wafers for the most part, preferring to graze or biofilm on the glass, plants, and wood. It makes me think that the bulk of their diet in the wild is biofilm as well since mine have only gotten fatter and all 6 have survived so far in my 21 gallon. I feed a small amount everyday, about the size of a grain of rice. A little goes a long way with this stuff. It comes with a little scooper, so I take that and dip it in the tank to fill it with water. Then I add the bacter ae and mix with a toothpick. I then dump it right in front of the outflow so it gets evenly distributed. You can also add in some powdered fry food to the mix just to make sure they’re getting everything they need. I was able to raise about 20 celestial pearl danio fry in a 2.5 gallon tank by feeding them this during their first couple weeks. I would also boil/blanch the veggies for a few minutes to soften them up, especially the kale. Hope this helps and best of luck in the future! Thanks for the videos and information, hopefully one day these fish won’t need to be wild caught anymore.
Thanks! I actually got it to work haha that’s what this video is about
Your videos are an amazing resource! Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you for watching!
I Just got a bunch of oto fry today, thank god i found this video. Thanks for sharing and greetins from Brazil! I have some gerbils too. Yours are super cute!
Call him ROCKY
Grats. Happy they are well now.
Omg they are so tiny and precious ❤️
I know right? 🥺
Thanks for letting us know snails do eat the eggs.
This is soo great ❤ Love your passion for the otos and that you’re trying to breed them! I just bred my parotocinclus jumbos and hatched the eggs for the first time. I think the kind of related to otos but are also a pleco? 🤷 I was looking to your video for ideas on how to feed them. Thank you for the info!! I have Repashy super green and bottom dweller, so I’ll probably use that mix to put on some plants in the breeder box. Wish me luck and best of luck to you with breeding them again!! 🎉
So, I recovered from my tragic sudden death of 3 ottos. I slowly added 5 more and now, it’s been 2 weeks and they seem okay. My tank had a sudden ich problem with one neon and an Otto, luckily, all have survived the heat treatment and I’m now in the post ich heat treatment. I sure hope I can start getting some eggs from my favorite cats.
Best of luck to you! Any questions I’m here
one thing i have learned from breeding my otos is they are social and the more you have the better the chances are for successful breeding. another i do to help boost the mood is using blanched lettuce and zucini and veggie rounds. it is very important they they have a food source at all times. if you do the lettuce and zuccini be sure to change it every other day. goodluck !!!
I've been breeding fish for a long time.. So first congrats on your baby Otto. Second I've always had bad luck with snails eating fish eggs... Some snails are worse than others. The best snails are Giant Japanese pond snails. They pretty much only eat algae and are too large to get into tiny and tight places where eggs are layed. Ranshorns and pond snails will get some eggs and miss others... and then there are Milasian Trumpet snails. In a tank where I have them, literally only one egg ever hatched over the 10 years I kept fish in it. These things actively hunt eggs, especially after dark. In as much as killing off the snails was too hard, I just used that tank to grow out fry and stopped trying to breed fish in it. Getting rid of the snails might also give you more algae for your baby ottos to eat.
Good luck
He's a warrior, hence his name should be Warri 😂
Can i ise 30cm or 40cm size tank for small breed this fish ? And how often should we change the water ?
Hi, thank you for sharing this video. Would you keep parents and other ottos together with fry in the same tank? Do you reckon it is safe for the fry? Thank you!
Yes it’s safe! They won’t bother the fry
I just got a whole bunch of oto fry today and thank goodness I found this video. Fish is not my specialty, but I def want them to survive. Sounds like sprulina powder for a bit, then kale?
Yes, that will work 💕 powder for the first couple of weeks and as they grow up you can venture into other veggies and algae flakes/wafers
try zuchini my ocotocinclus go nuts for zuchinis blanch them for 2 minutes since zuchini gets soft easily its a great food for them
Thanks for the videos! Just discovered 5 fry today. Sorry if I missed it, but exactly how should I feed them with spirulina powder - how much, how often? Also feeding zucchini, algae wafers, and shrimp pellets, but they are in a shrimp tank, so lots of competition for food.
Keep a veggie in at all times, be careful with spirulina powder as it does cloud the water, less than a pinch and do a very small water change every 2 days you’ve dosed the powder. Algae wafers can be 2-3 times a week, it’s likely the shrimp will hoard but it can be used to distract them from the other foods
@@finsandwhiskers Awesome - thank you!
Best of luck! Keep me updated :)
Awww. Oto fan from India.
Ewwww. Oto hater from Cleveland.
I recently just got some of these.
They’re the best! 🥰
Well not sure if I will see anything but last night before I turned out the tank light I saw my Otocincus breeding. A few weeks ago I added half an Almond Leaf and recently a piece of driftwood. Other than that I haven't changed anything or my cleaning routine. I was not expecting them to with other species in the tank but I guess something made them feel secure enough. We will see what happens.
any update?
@@finsandwhiskers Eggs may have been laid at one point. I often see these whitish spots on leaves or the glass but no fry. I'll be moving my Saemese Algae Eater into my 75 gallon when I get it. Will be interesting to see if that changes the dynamics. He is harmless but sometimes he follows them around and they're like, "Ah, yeah, go away" lol.
Hi, what was your pH, GH, and KH? I watched the other video, but don't remember hearing it.
pH is 7.5-7.8 and as for the other two, I don’t have tests for them anymore but I honestly think the importance is up to the things I listed in the first vid!
@@finsandwhiskers Cool, thank you! I'll see what happens. My water is moderately hard, but hopefully it will work.
Robby Nowell no problem! Any questions throughout, feel free to ask
Great work to make breeding sustainable! I hope industry will turn to breeding at some point and introduce certification system (wild , homebred)
I hope so too!
Cucumber 🥒
Hi~Could you tell me what’s the water temperature of your tank ? Thank you!
In the first video, she said between 71-75 degrees
@@bradapple9305 thanks !
thanks for the help!!
How long before the eggs hatch?
Usually 2 days!
Paul
I haven't seen my otos in months. No bodies, so I assume they're somewhere in there.
Mine disappeared for a few days too. It freaked me out. I was scared that they died while hiding.
Hello, what kind of filter do you use for this otocinclus aquarium?
A sponge filter!
Only 1 sponge filter? No canister or other filter? Is it enough to make the tank clean for 6 oto? Because as far as i know otocinclus produce a lot of waste hahaha. Wanna try to breed this cute creature to at my home
I use two sponge filters and have lots of plants! Otos have a small bio load although they are poop machines haha
@@finsandwhiskers In what size tank?
How to identify who is male and female?
Females are larger and have more prominent stomachs, males are shorter and smaller!
Will full grown Otos eat algae tablets
Majority should show interest, yes!
You can name him Brian lol 😂
How to identity male and female in Oto cats?
Females are larger and have more prominent stomachs, males are shorter and smaller!
malaysian snails will eat the eggs and are nocturnal probably why you lost the eggs at night
