When bedsheets got torn or stained (usually bleach or rust stains), my Mom would cut down the good parts into bias tape for her aprons. She said the earlier brands weren't always colorfast or too costly. She always wore aprons to do housework but didn't want to spend lots of money yet enjoyed the look of bias tape. 🍄🍄
I save my old sheets to make muslins when I sew a new pattern. I love this suggestion, I am going to try it, what a money saver! Thanks!
Great idea!!!❤❤❤
Hi, wondering if two pieces cut along the grainline but joined on the bias will work as a bias binding?
love it
fabric cut on the grain will not have give and work the same as bias tape
This is the BEST tutorial on CZcams for making bias tape!!! There are tons out there doing this same process, but your makes the most sense. The videoing is spot on so that we can clearly see what you are doing. Thank you a million times for this! ❤
You are so welcome
Yay !😅! No more sewing the strips together individually !!!!
Thankyou so much !
You are so welcome
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I saw this done once on a TV show years ago and of course could not remember how it worked. I saved your video and I’m so happy you made it!
You are so welcome!
That’s really clever, thank you for sharing
I'm so glad I found your channel! I've shied away from making my own bias tape, but no more!
Wonderful! I'm so glad you found me too!
You’ve done a wonderful job of describing this easy but counterintuitive method. Brava!
I've seen this method before but forgot how to do it - THANKS for this great reminder 🥰
You are so welcome
I have been making my own bias tape for years using the bias tape maker, but have always cut strips and sewed them together, Excited to try this. Looks so slick. Thanks.😊
Let me know how it goes.
Great tutorial. My mom taught me years ago when the red card was first sold.
I found out the hard way that if you match the other two sides of the cut square, the strips will be on the grain.
The binding is flatter if the seams are set before pressing open.
I am smiling. So many of your tips were taught to me by my Mom. Miss her.
Ahhhhhhh. That is wonderful that your mother taught you so much. ❤️
How do you set seams?
@@Carolyn-qd8mj just press them before opening. It makes the thread sink down into the fabric. Then press the seam open.
Before you open the seam allowances to press open the seam, press the stitching. The heat (and steam if using steam) flattens things out, and in the case of natural fibers, "shrinks" the cotton thread and material to regain the shape before the seam was stitched." @@Carolyn-qd8mj
Wow,been sewing for over 50 years.wish I know this 50 years ago
I know, right!
Great instruction. I was confused as to how to fold the fabric. You made it seem simple.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have been piecing bias tape together for years. I will never do bias tape like that again. 🎉
It's so nice when someone really knows how to explain things!! Thank you! ❤
You are so welcome
Your video has been the easiest to watch, very enjoyable. How do you communicate so concisely? The most "aha" moment was the 1/4” extra at the start of the matching the stripes. Thank you!
Thanks. You are so kind!
You are so brilliant! The easiest way ever to make a long bit of bias tape! I love all of your ideas. Thank you so much, Jan
You are so welcome
Love your video tutorials, you are a wonderful teacher!
Thank you so much!
YAY! Now I know what to do with my stashed single fat quarters. Thanks Jan.
awesome
Where have you been all my sewing life?? Thank you for this excellent demonstration Jan!! 🥰
Thanks. You are so kind
This method gives you 5 yards of Continuous Bias tape which gives you 180” inches of bias tape. An average queen size quilt is at least 90” sq meaning you will need aprox 360” inches of tape plus an extra 10”-12” to go around the corners & for the ends to meet up. If you do this to a yard of fabric then you will have more then enough for a Queen quilt plus some left over for a throw or pot holders, etc
That is great information. Thanks so much for sharing!
Jan you have inspired me to get back to my sewing projects. I wish I had a crafting room yours is beautiful
Thanks. You are so kind
Absolutely genius!! I am going to be watching this video over and over!!!
Thank you!
We all agree…you are a great instructor, making it simple for us to follow you and have nice pro finishes to our projects.
My oops was using a Frixion pen to draw the lines…I “erased” them when I pressed open the seams! Easy fix and lesson learned!
I appreciate that and thanks for sharing.

I’ve been a quilter and a quilt teacher for 28 years. This is the best demonstration I’ve ever seen. If you prefer using your iron in the upright position you can disengage the horizontal mechanism. Check your instructions. Love your channel.

I just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. I watched several videos and did not have any success. The lines were always off after the final sewing part. It was so frustrating! It was the 1/4" tip that finally made my lines, well, line up after sewing them together! Thank you!!
Glad it helped!

That small piece of fabric you use at the beginning of your bias tape seams is referred to as an "onie-offie". I'm sure there are other names for it, but that is the one that comes to mind. Great tip!

Thank you so much for sharing these tips. Could you please teach us how to measure the size of the cloth necessary for a set length and width of biais tape, reminding us of the maths formula?
Great tutorial Thank you I will be making my own from now on x 😊
Wonderful!
I love making "tubular" bias tape!☺
me too!
Great tutorial!😃
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!❤
You are so welcome
MANY THANKS, VERY HELPFUL TO US.
You are welcome!
Jan, great demo. This method also goes by the name of continuous bias tape. Demos such as these help those of us directionally challenged! I would also note that for those who like to sew their clothes with knits, woven bias tape is great for sleeve and neck trims which can add both color and stability.
love it
Awesome😊
Thanks 🤗
Great tutorial. x
Thank you!
Oh my gosh! Thank you for posting this very clever technique. I made a flaw free, five yard tape on try one I was getting ready to put an exterior sewed ruffle onto a baby blanket which is three strips of material, one being four inches wide and two being two inches wide. With a few adjustments for the four inch version, I was able to put the ruffle on without adjoining the strips every time I come to the end of one. I am forever watching you!
Thanks. You are so kind and thanks for sharing your tip.
GENIUS
Thank you!
