This was the best idea ever. I'm making porch cushions and was able to get about 25 yards of bias strips with your MAGIC trick. My dad was an upholsterer and he taught me a totally different way of doing this. I wish he was still alive so that I could teach him this method. Thank you so much.
I’ve seen several other videos on how to cut bias strips, but I have never seen this technique. Who thinks these methods up? Absolutely brilliant. I’m gonna try this on my next project.
I've used this trick since the 80's. Found it on a vhs video on how to upholster. The only difference is after cutting 4 corners off, and cutting through one layer diagonally to opposite corner as she shows. Then flip fabric over and cut down the other corner, through single layer diagonally down to its opposite corner. You'll have a cut opposite of each other but on opposite sides, like an X. This allows the fabric to lay flater to open up to the 6inch section to cut next. It works. So glad someone finally put it on youtube.
@@ASquarePillowIsntSquare Those Sunset books were actually really great! I have a bias tape gadget to run the tape through to create bias binding, and they gave me a parallelogram pattern to use that’s quite efficient. It doesn’t create automatically continuous tape though. This is amazing!
Wow!! That is insanely helpful!! Where do people like you come up with these fantastic ideas?!?! Thank you soooo much!! Too bad I didn’t see this earlier in a previous project, but hey, better late than never. And I could totally follow you ( not totally green sewer). Amazing!!
Thank you so much. I only had a 38cm square of fabric that i really wanted to use. By doing it this way I was able to get 5mt of binding. Blown me away that's for sure.
Thank you for this. I had only 16 inches of fabric and needed 6 yards of welting. Your method provided me with 9 yards of welting. Brilliant way to maximize yardage.
Now this I have never seen wow girl u make me blush every time I see ur work I so happy I found ur channel thank u my dear for teaching us this cool trick.
What kind of magic is this? It's like origami for sewing! I can't imagine what kind of imagination it takes to come up with something like this. Thanks for sharing!
I found this method in the internet many years ago to make binding for a quilt. I wrote down the instructions and of course I lost them in the black hole that lives in my sewing room. This is the absolute best method to make bias I've ever seen. Thank you for posting and now I have a video I can save rather than a piece of paper I will promptly loose.
Absolutely brilliant! thank you so much for sharing!! I own a marine canvas fabrication shop, and have a lot of cushions for hotels and other clients, and this is such a time saver, fabric saver and $$ saver!!
Best video ever! I HATED making long bias tape but this is an amazing way of saving fabric and time! THANK YOU for this ingenious way to make continuous bias tape and save fabric too
Magical, indeed! 🤩 Mathematical genius? Absolutely!!! 🤩 And your scissors are sharpened perfectly, which to my mind is the whole kit and caboodle. 😃 I'm no seamstress, but I do work with paper and there's nothing better than a perfectly sharpened pair of scissors. When my kids were younger they knew they shouldn't use "mom's scissors" because it drove me nuts if they used them to cut their paper projects for schoolwork. 🤨 Hands off, kiddos! 😅 Anywayyyyyyy, your bias tape cutting vid was fascinating, and you helped me to feel more comfortable with my obsession of using separate scissors for different mediums. Plus, you're so deft with your cutting of fabric. Truly, I'm impressed. 🙂
Well, I never in all my life......That is pure genius...thank you so much. This is so much easier than the other method I've used in the past...all twisty and hard to see the lines.... I'm doing your method from now on. . just amazing.
OMG so much simpler a technique than another 'continuous bias binding' tutorial I used which was tedious & meant I was not consistently accurate in widths which was an inefficient use of material when creating vast amount of cording for some slip covers - thank you so much! ❤
Excellent method for making bias welt!! I know a similar trick, but this one works even better for maximizing the yardage of bias from your fabric. Definitely saving this trick to my files.
I'm a newbie, so, just for funzies, I wanted to try this. You are such an awesome teacher! I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. 84ft later..... lol I subscribed to your channel after using your video to make a cushion for an odd shaped chair. You're a fantastic teacher. My cushions turned out perfect thanks to you.
Wow, very impressive! Thank you and greetings from New York City . The seams don’t really matter if the cotton is lightweight. Even the purchased bias tape has seams in it and it’s harder and harder to find 100% cotton bias tape, so I will be trying this out .🗽 👍🏼🇵🇷❤️
Absolutely impressive. Excellent video, and an incredible method to make a nice continuous strip of bias binding. Thank you for showing us how you do it. Magic. You must be Wonder Woman! 🤗🌹💕
In the 1960’s my mom was into redoing upholstery and found this idea somewhere in a newspaper or book and thought she had found the keys to the kingdom. Now I know how to as well thanks to you!
It actually doesn't matter what size the starting piece is. The only thing that will change slightly is the angle of the bias, which is not that important as long as there is a bias to make it stretchy. If you remember your trigonometry (or go online for a refresher) you can calculate how much any size piece of fabric will yield. I made a mock-up with a rectangle of paper, taped the sewn edges together, and wrote my known numbers on the sides. I cut the diagonal and used Pythagoras’ Theorem, the square root of (A squared + B squared) = C to calculate the new longest side. Then I went online and used a trig calculator to work out the new shortest side. This takes a couple of steps because you have to work out the new angles, but the trig calculator is great for that. From there I was able to work out how many inches/yards/meters I could get. For example, a 39” (1M) length of 54” fabric and bias strip of 1.75” (1 ¾”) will yield just over 33M or 36 yards. You have to do a paper model to wrap your head around this, but it is possible and not that difficult, and if you’re doing a lot of cushions it’s crucial!
Absolutely brilliant. A clever technique expertly presented with a concise no nonsense delivery. You deserve way more views and subscribers my good lady. Subbed, liked and rang your bell and will definitely be trawling your videos.
Nancy, this is genius! It's the second most amazing technique I've seen to cut yards of fabric to make one continue strip without having to mortice smaller pieces. It's second only to the magical technique for cutting one continual strip from a flat bed sheet for crocheting rugs. Thanks, and thanks! You made my sewing a lot easier and faster. So much to learn.
Nancy, I'm so glad to have come across your channel this is a much needed skill in home decorating! As I too, have been sewing everything all my life and thinking of how much fabric that was wasted, using the traditional way makes me want to just scream! Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm a quilter and have made a continuous bias binding many times. But your method is AMAZING!! I will be doing this from now on! I subscribed and have spent the last 1.5 hrs watching your videos! Thank you!
Thanks for this. Need to keep your video close at hand to keep referring back to!!!! Great grandmother and years sewing, but a major stroke stole some of my skills from memory so now a vid like this is my best friend.
I love this! I'm so glad I can make it easier for you to remember this trick. I'm glad you're still sewing. My memory is not what it once was either :)
I have watched another video using this rectangle method to cut the bias, but I NEED TO try this one now❤️❤️❤️ This method SAVES on fabric as well too😊😊
I absolutely love everything about this video! Your directions are clear and easy to follow. You don’t use a bunch of fancy equipment. You get a great result! Thank you for demonstrating this. AND!!! I read thru your description, and I still have that Sunset Slipcover book with the directions on how to do this bias strip technique. I’m glad I held on to it for all these years 😊
Made over 20 yards of 2” bias cut chenille from a 30” wide piece of fabric! More than I needed, but I used far less fabric than making what I need the “old fashioned” way. Great video! Very easy to follow.
This is such a great idea. Im not sure where ive found it years ago on CZcams. But it was EXTREMELY similar to yours and used to cut fabric like a cake roll. I used that similar technique to make my rag rugs! Such a great video. You made it much simpler to follow/understand! So THANK YOU!!
I wanted to see you stretch it at various positions. I am not convinced the entire length is on the bias. But lady you are a genius for figuring this method out. Wow, it does make a lot of bias? tape or binding. Not sure I would try to do this.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!! I sat and watch in awe thinking there's NO WAY and then as the MAGIC trick became obvious 😲all I could say was well I'll be damn 👏 Sheer GENIUS!!!🙌THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Oh, never mind. I understand it now…(1/2 yard) or 18”x36” will yield 10 yards of Bias. Thanks for the formula. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!!!
I think I used 1/2 or 3/4 yd. of 54” home dec fabric in that video but there is no rule.. you just want to start with a rectangle that gives you a square or a non-narrow rectangle after you fold it in half :)
I've seen something similar to the but not for making bias but to make cut "fabric yarn" for crocheting rag rugs, again not on the bias. What a great trick.
this is so good to know, it is a lot of work but that is far outweighed by how little wastage you have! Thank you for the most excellent Bias tutorial xxx
