Japan's Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

- Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.
Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!
So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.
Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.
So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

Wow, the lady is sooooo nice in her pursuit to try to find a place for you to stay the night. The kind of hospitality that you'd only find in Japan I guess! Can't wait for the next episode!
khyezr You can find it in Philippines too !😉 They will even let you stay in their own house if you want to!
When it's dark and you are foreign to the location and searching a accomdation. Many people use their contacts to help you out xD
@@cfdby4784 agree Filipino here
You can probably finish riding through all 6 islands at a reasonable pace if you start at dawn. I dont understand why you would ride into the night at a later hour, and not book ahead a place to stay. This was poor planning. Could be dangerous. Just saying. Now I have to watch the 2nd part lol
A tip: watch series on Flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies lately.
Omg this turned from cute travel video to scary drama so fast 😂
Japanese horror movie in the making... just jokes :P
That lady who called the hotels was so nice!! She really took the effort to help you! :)
Was super touched by how much she wanted to help us!!
I cycled from Onomichi to Imabari in one day last year. Even an experienced cyclist would take 8 hours to do that and I'm not a fit person so it took me 11 hours to complete, including 1.5 hour *not wasted* because I went to a wrong way but man the view was so beautiful!
And no, you really can't do that in one day with that "basket bike". You need a bike with gearboxes and stuff. Here are some tips if anyone want to try it as an visitor:
- Schedule at least 2 days so you may fully enjoy the trip. You can book accommodation on one of the islands
- Don't bring extra stuff with you. There are luggage forward service near Onomichi station. Or you can send your luggage through Yamato Transport "Black cat" express to your next stop with reasonable price.
- Don't need to worry about food and water. There are unlimited amount of vending machines, convenience stores, and restaurants along the way.
- Don't push yourself too hard early in the trip. The accenting to bridges between islands are really loooong and you will do that each and every islands so take your time.
- Not every island has beautiful view some of them looks like beaten up town. Don't worry about it just follow the blue strip on the road.
- Near the end there is a really nice "surprise" decenting. I'm not going spoil it and I'm sure Angela will show it on the next video.
That's all folks! You really should try Shimanami Kaido at least once if you like traveling. It's a very unique experience and I highly recommend it.
Well, I am even more intrigued! I tend to enjoy quiet, beaten up, ghost town type of places.
Thank you so much for this!
The Yamato service would be much needed!
The old lady at the end is one of the things I love about Japan-complete strangers can be so kind and go out of their way to help people they don’t know.
Japanese are so kind. It touches my heart.
I like the "horror" ending!
Dun dun dun... 👻
I love it too!!! 😱
Happy Friday!! How has everyone beeeeen?? Forgive me for the late uploads recently!! Will be back on track from now 🤞🏼🤞🏼
But... more importantly, what do you think happens next...??? 😏
You stay at a spooky Internet Cafe........?
internationally ME oh my! I hope you two found somewhere to rest! I think the nice lady will help😉
Given how nice the old lady is maybe she lets you guys stay at her place :D?
Great video as always! Also saw that you are going to Kanazawa? I´m studying there at the moment ^-^ Would be nice if there was a fan meetup !
I say that the kind woman offers you accommodation in her house...
internationally ME I hope you stay safe and I also hope that find a place to stay that is cozy
That helpful lady is heaven sent. And the best part is... that's common in Japan.
Japanese people are naturally polite, disciplined, warm, and super helpful. The go-out-of-their-way helpful.
That, and their beautiful country makes keep coming back to Japan.
This is why I appreciate your channel so much! I had no idea this even existed. Another amazing video, thank you!
Yay! A new video! I watch your stuff religiously. It's helped my fiancé and I make the decision to move to Japan and your videos have been a great help in helping us learn about the country and prepare ourselves
Really awesome to hear that! Just dive into the culture and be open to learning new things and I'm sure you will have a great experience living here 😀 Who knows, we might even bump into each other in Japan some day!
Best of luck to you and your fiancé, Josh :)
what a cliffhanger ending, waiting for the next video!
😉😉
I saw this video before my trip to Japan. And as soon as I saw I knew I had to do it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. Cycling the Shimanami Kaido was a life changing experience. I did this by myself and taught me so much! I’ll forever cherish these moments forever 💖
CONGRATS!! ^,^
Isn't it beautiful what you can do on a bicycle? No noise, no exhaust, just enjoying the surroundings around you. Awesome.
Did this last year in spring. Only went for a one-day ride and managed about 30 km (with plenty of stops to enjoy the amazing sights) and it was hands down my favourite part of the whole trip to Japan. One warning though for anyone thinking about doing this.
I went in March so I didn't think sunburn would become an issue, especially seeing as I was wearing a long sleeve sweater (weather was fairly cold) and a helmet that shielded my face from the sun. Completely forgot about my hands however! After 8 hours more or less straight sunlight I had the WORST sunburn which turned into painful blisters the next day >.< Let my mistake be a lesson to y'all.
I found this channel a few months ago and it's become a ritual to watch one of your videos each week. They're always so fun and relaxing. Your passion for traveling around Japan inspires me to one day head out there myself.
I've had so many experiences on my Japan trips like your wonderful lady at the end.
It always amazes me the number of super nice and genuinely lovely people who are willing to help in Japan. It's one of the many reasons I love the country and keep going back.
Ooh... A cliffhanger ending - now I can't wait for the next episode! But seriously, that lady was so nice and helpful. She went above and beyond to help!
The ending was the best! Really can't wait for PART 2

The suspense music at the end added the chill

Wow beautiful places. The ending though...kinda scary lol. When you bought that chicken burger in that konbini, it reminded me of a hilarious skit in Nichijou when Yuuko bought a chicken bar.

Both thumbs up for bicycling! Such a great way of traveling I believe! Looking forward for the next series!

OMG! I have just found your chanel and I love it. You have just inspired me to do this! I'll be in Japan traveling for 40 days and this is an awesome thing to do. Great videos :)
I'm glad you went slow and took pictures. If it were me I'd zoom through the whole thing before noon. 70km is like a brisk morning workout!
I enjoyed watching your adventure.
Great video Angela! The bell sound was creepy in the dark...lol I hope you found accommodations...well I am sure you did. Can't wait for pt2! Keep it real girl 💖
Absences makes the heart grow fonder!!! Nice sites!!!!

This seems lovely!
Wahhh I will do it when I back to Japan.... Ur video so awesome 🤗
waw..........assume place................wish can go there once.........Love it
Me at the beginning: OMG! WANNA TRY THIS OUT!
at the end: wait... Lol. Poor Angela.
Rain Toro lol omg yes. I was like I should try this too, then towards the end I was like nah. If she can have trouble like this I will definitely have trouble too.
Lots of unexpected things happen when travelling but I think that's what makes the experience even better! Just book accommodation before you go and I'm sure you will be fine :)
My gosh.. THIS is an adventure. Sweet woman at the end for helping you out. It's a good thing you have a guy with you too!
Shikoku always makes me think of Endo Shozo’s “Dynamite Shikoku” comedy character haha.
That aside I love these videos and am patient because you put so much care and detail into them to make them what they are. Thank you for another great video!! Aloha!
Everything tastes better after cycling all day... ;) Great adventure! and a cliffhanger...
Amazing trip, Nice presentation, Regards from Egypt
Going to book mark this video because the Shimanami Kaido is something that I really want to do one day.
Thank you for the video! :D
It's soooo much more beautiful in real life! Videos don't do justice :O
I love the cliff hanger.. I got locked out of my business hotel in Kagoshima. It made for a fun & interesting night. Looking forward to the next video.

New Adventure 🙌
Thanks for the great video! I've ridden the shimanami kaido twice, once on a hired cross bike and once on my own road bike which I brought to Japan especially for the ride! Watching your video rekindled some fantastic memories and makes me want to go back again soon!
It's a tough ride on a mama Chari (as my Japanese wife found out haha) so well done!
Greets from Perth Western Australia!
I did this trip in spring and it was one of the best bike rides I've ever done! The views were good. But 70 kms in a day is a lot. Deserved the onsen afterwards! Hope you managed to find one too!
This videos prove the real nature around the world. So nice 🙃
:O The drama. What a nice lady. Can't wait to see the next episode.
whoa, suddenly found this! I am so happy to be around the first hundreds of people watching this video! can't wait to the ep2:)
