I go to the Philippines as often as I can, and while it can be a fun place I can assertively say that its gun death rate is WAY higher than reported. Duterte's drug war has people legit getting sniped from rooftops in Manila. This is not to mention the conflict down in Mindanao. Our (the United States) gun death rate appears high because we're one of the only countries that actually accurately reports these things.
Even in Japan (somewhere else I've lived for a long time), police are notorious for under-reporting violent crime, to include Yakuza shootouts, because police chiefs' success is measured by crime and conviction rates in their jurisdictions. They don't want themselves to look bad and they only pursue crimes that they can 100% secure a conviction on. Convictions are almost exclusively secured on a confession, so if a person looks like they won't squeal even under pressure or beatings (yes, it happens), they'll often look the other way.
All of the anti-gun arguments that rely on data from other countries are extremely cherry-picked and oversimplify these issues. Comparing the US to other countries is like comparing apples and oranges.

Several years ago, I dug into gun stats and had a ridiculous time trying to find objective data. My goal was to test if I was being influenced by gun propaganda, and my first point was to look at violent crimes before and after gun bans. After much digging, I ended up finding a 300+ page published study that broke down stats nation by nation to an exhaustive degree, and which used infographics for every possible demographic and covered the entire spectrum from gung ho to zero tolerance. What I found out is that human beings have a consistent appetite for murder, regardless of available weaponry. So, when guns are banned the murder rate does not decrease. Instead, the method of killing, in the absence of firearms, becomes much more personal and brutal. Let's be honest with ourselves and ask the question: would you rather be beaten to death or shot, if your death by murder was certain? To each his own.
Another factor that I almost never hear being talked about is literacy. There is a direct link between violence, incarceration, recidivism and funcrional literacy. The only known remedy to erase(not reduce) recidivism is high functioning literacy. Warren Buffet, at one time, sponsored a prison program for higher learning that was transformational to the inmates who participated. It was run by his sister, Delores or Doris was her name, and the program selected a group of inmates locked up as young adults and developed their literacy and writing skills. I think there was a documentary aired on netflix years ago, and if you have a sincere interest in improving our system, this documentary will move you to tears. It is so simple, yet our people in power love to defund education in prison.
The inner city schools are the worst for literacy, so it is no surprise why there is so much violence in urban neighborhoods like the south side of Chicago. It is so prevalent that it almost seems planned. If you want to make a true difference for the better, fund reading programs and take an interest in all of our youth achieveing this skill to a high degree of function.

The only gun control legislation that could avoid violating the second amendment involves educating everyone in the proper care and individually controlled use of firearms. Ideally, firearm training should be a required part of every public school curriculum. Reloading ammo should be available in shop class with lots of videos demonstrating what can go wrong, if you’re not careful.

But I agree with Joe that guns have other aspects to make them appealing to the general public besides only personal safety, like hunting and sport. In other words, I believe that Joe doesn't fall for the "slippery slope argument" many people fall for thinking that if the government limits, for example, the capacity of magazines, that they'll end up prohibiting pistols, another way more extreme example.
Then again, I understand that prohibiting guns is a band-aid (and probably a very ineffective one) that doesn't solve the mental health problems american society faces that causes us to shoot eachother every chance we get, super markets, schools.. so be it..
