Sweetener found in Diet Coke will be declared as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans

  • The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is set to classify aspartame, a widely used artificial sweetener, as a possible carcinogen. After years of conflicting research, the IARC is expected to make the declaration on July 14. Aspartame, which is 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, is commonly found in low-calorie food and beverages such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. Despite containing calories, it is used in smaller amounts due to its high sweetness. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this important classification.

I’d like to point out a few things. First, the direct action of releasing insulin is for the body to turn sugar in the blood into fat. Insulin is a hormone, and that is its primary purpose. So the result of gaining weight coming from behavior that causes the release insulin should be viewed as expected.
Second, I think at this point that we have more than enough scientific measurement about the problematic consequences of sugary drinks to at least advise that their consumption is definitively linked with negative health outcomes. Just the overall psychological dynamic of acquiring joy from eating/drinking sugar is behavioral activity that is adverse to health outcomes.

This thinking is so backwards. Artificial sweeteners don’t have to cause cancer; those people who tend to consume diet soda in large quantities make enough other poor choices that complete the total cancer risk. People who tend to drink diet sodas often use them as a means to avoid calories. Many people think of diet soda as free or offsetting impact of other foods. Chances are, they are not making better choices in other parts of their lives…diet, exercise, self care, stress reduction, sleep. They’ll drink a diet soda while eating a double cheeseburger with large fries (fried in a processed seed oil) from a fast food place and think “I’ve just saved myself 100 calories.” They’ll do this five to seven days a week and expect no consequences.
These studies are focused on artificial sweetener consumption and the incidence of cancer among populations. They’re not considering the consumer mindset and the full context of life choices of those who tend to consume lots of diet soda. There are too many variables and no financial benefit to a manufacturer.
There are no shortcuts to health without consequences -whether it’s Wegovy, Ozempic, gastric sleeve or diet beverages. You have to change the way you think about beverages and food and make purposeful choices. If there is a big corporate interest in consuming a popular food or beverage that is manufactured, a person who wants better health should avoid these.
There are health benefits to many unprocessed foods that are bland and bitter. Yes, I eat Brussels sprouts and broccoli without drowning them in a sauce. Corporate America wants to sell them to you, but processed and packaged with a sauce that was created in a lab by a scientist solely for sensory stimulation-not for health.

@@litesp the weird thing is, people seem to get addicted to sweet, energizing, fizzy drinks.
Do they drink grapefruit juice by the case? Or even O.J.? How about milk? Is there a huge % of the population who forego almost all their water needs, for milk?
Soda, esp. Colas & Mtn. Dew types have that perfect mix of sweet, fizz & caffeine._ It just seems to hit the addiction button more than any other non-alcoholic beverage.🤔
And no, we are babysat by the gov't far too much already. This is not a prohibition issue, but rather an education and behavioral issue.🙏🏼

I’ve switched over to unsweetened iced tea, partly based upon your reports. I don’t care if my drinks taste _sweet_ ; I just want them to taste _something_ !
Sometimes I drink limeade very-lightly sweetened (i.e., still pretty sour) with sucralose. By that I mean actual, pure sucralose, not Splenda, which is 95% sugar and has the same number of calories as sugar - no kidding; look up the ingredient list!
All the reports I’ve seen pretty much agree with what you’re saying here: “just don’t overdo the aspartame.” 3-4 cans a day, no cancer risk, but a dozen or more per day, you’re pushing you luck a bit.
