I used to work night shift, and drank one or two Starbucks Doubleshot Espressos (not the Energy type) half way through to keep awake, 110mg of caffeine each. One night I had 3 of them, and later my employees politely asked that I not drink _that_ much caffeine. I was moving so fast I had sparks flying off of me. 🙂

I'd love to see more of these types of videos. I'd be curious as to whether there is any research around lethal levels of potassium, as I gave up caffeine in lieu of peoducts that were naturally high in potassium for energy that wasn't associated with anxiety and jitters.

Something not covered here is long term excessive use of coffee. Coffee is a diuretic and when taken in large amounts on a daily basis, I believe keeps the body from absorbing many necessary nutrients and can cause dehydration. I recently made a trip to the emergency room for what I believe was exactly this scenario. I had nausea, vertigo, vomiting, fast shallow breathing, shaking and chills, weakness, difficulty walking, etc. They gave me a saline IV and did full lab tests. Everything they tested for came back perfectly normal, except I had low magnesium. I suspect that wasn't the only nutrient I was low on and, in addition to the dehydration and nutrient depletion, it had caused problems in my inner ear releasing calcium crystals where they shouldn't be. I was drinking about 6 coffees or more a day forever. Now I'm drinking a single briefly brewed black tea in the morning, and drinking lots of herbal tea and plain water all day. Life is getting back to normal, but taking some time. I am 65.

My husband and I only drank one cup of coffee each morning (no other source of caffeine otherwise). When we gave it up we felt TERRIBLE for WEEKS! Headaches, stomach aches, lethargy...even heroin junkies feel better after a week! Just think...the entire world is addicted to a drug that leaves us groggy and irritable upon awakening til we take that first hit! So we gave it up in 2011 and here's the best part -- you wake up feeling awake, go through your day with no ups and downs in energy, and go to bed naturally tired, with no problem falling sleep (and sleeping through the night!). Decaf coffee (and even decaf teas) still have some caffeine (herbal teas don't, but I'm not a tea drinker). We don't drink anything but water but when I'm in the mood for a hot beverage I've found the one that mimics coffee best is a German product called "Pero" (find it online) -- it's a powder you mix with hot water and add your favorite creamer (vanilla soymilk is delicious...chocolate almond milk makes it heavenly!).

One symptom I often get is a feeling of meningitis, with a weird icky pain at the base of my skull, and what feels like in my brain, after drinking espresso or energy drinks.
