It's a really cool thing people do! Humans have been using pollarding as a method of arboriculture for a very long time! The way the tree grows back produces very straight, thin branches, which can be useful for all sorts of things, from tools to even woven wooden structures!

To apply it, mix with a concentrated green or blue dye, then cut the bark (lots of ways. Pollarding should work, but is super inefficient) and cover the exposed part totally. Typically the herbicide will eventually run a little

Makes me remember that one time he was painting murals on the Palestine side of the Israeli-Palestinian wall and some local Palestinian man commented something along "we don't want murals, we want to be free".
