As someone who likes tactical gear and ultra light hiking, I due applaud 5.11 for making the attempt. I would love a harder use ultra lightweight pack. They need to dump the high viz stuff. Make it light but still tactical.
thats' one thing i always loved about (pre mystery ranch) dana design backpacks. the pack lids on some larger models had removable lid that turned into a fanny/hip pack.
I like that the survival chest rig being thin for your firearm and you pick molle pouches for customization to your needs. I wish they put molle on the front of the utility chest rig like the survival model. It would also be nice if they made that molle flap some what rigid to help support the pouches that will be added on.
Man you are one of the few people that ,first of all are able but also that can be so super thorough and not come off like a complete goof...great job you always cover alot of ground, awesome!

Great reviews, as always. I like the Hardside Hydration option. I would love it if they had a built-in filter (like Sawyer or Grayl).
I recently got a 5.11 rush 24 which I've been using lots, so I'll be sticking with that for now. Definitely a cool new direction for 5.11. A few odd layout/design choices like you mentioned, but seems like a good pack overall.

Thanks so much for this review. Hey do you think it would be too heavy if I strap on a 32oz Nalgene on the front of the survival molle version?
I use the Survival pack to carry a camera plus a few small items (folding knife, mini first aid kit, lighter, etc). It works well for me, comfortable and useful. I’m not sold on the backpacks.
I know this is out of the context of your use case scenario. But this would work great as a cycling bag being slick and with the tops snches might even make it a little aro. You could definitely use those Thompson just as well in conjunction with the water bottle pocket to put poles or a tripod in . Thanks for the great review!

What chest pack would be best for either a sig p239 or p229? I’m wondering if the thinner of the two chest rigs would be less bulky and heavy?

Will the hip belt from the 511 fit on your mystery ranch coulee 25??? (At first glance it looks like it might) I tried the mystery ranch with my hill people gear chest rig the other day…loved the mystery ranch pack except the flimsy belt doesn’t carry much load.
I have a couple rush pacs and a pair of boots, the Molle chest pack as a helpful edition to my filming gear to hold my phone in a mount while able to carry other gear with my hand free. 511 is expensive but I trust it with my life.

You forget about Helikon-Tex. Currently running the Numbat chest pack.
I regularly run a Hill People Gear chest rig about the same size as the utility version and I have to say I like the layout of the 5.11 better than the HPG version. On the HPG they have the same number of compartments, BUT they utilize two sets of heavy-duty zippers with 550 cord on the zipper pulls to open the compartments (annoying) and the pistol compartment is really just another pouch that I use for that purpose. So, I am definitely going to get one of the 5.11 versions to run in the near future. Thanks for the great review and heads up on this new line from 5.11.
Just got both chest rigs. Utility pack all the way for weapons and other gear
I want to love this pack but the compression system is odd. I really like the toned down laser cut molle and the good suspension. Weight is good, the color is great (except that horrific hi viz rain cover...why do they...nvm lol) and the organization is about perfect (too many pockets is a hindrance rather than an asset). Once these become available in Canada I may try the 24.
For me it seems that the 5.11 tries to expand this lighter lineup with cheaper variants of more expensive (and globally less available/harder to get) products already on the market, like this backpack slightly reminds me the SHADO 24L from Prometheus Design Werx and the chest packs were probably inspired by the ones from the Hill People Gear (the few years old Helikon-Tex Numbat is other good and cheaper one, but without the front PALS straps and they also have fanny packs with removable belts, can be used directly with the internal belt or even with a backpack's sternum strap).
I have the same setup -- the backpack and chest rig. Haven't had the opportunity to use the backpack yet, but I love the chest pack. And also, that Hardside Swig Rig is something I've been needing and never new existed -- but $30-$40 for a freaking flexible straw? Come on!
It’s a little more than that, and it’s a USA based company, and with a $10 nalgene it’s the combined same cost as a bladder but more versatile. That’s just me.

It'd be nice if it these type of packs rand a really nice well padded 3 or 4 row PAL Molle fixtures. 36lt a tad small it'd be nice if you could put a 1lt bottle pouch on each side of the belt.
Karimore do an option you can put a full Molle belt UNDER the pack so you could put 5 British water bottle pouches around it.
At 35l6 litres I'd prefer an option like that 40lt seems to be bare minimum for me
Great direction 5.11 is going with series of gear.
It’s also not overly expensive like the other brands.
I'd prefer to pay more to support other Americans making solid gear.
hope they make chest pack 2.0 with all harness point resalable, tried them at store such a pain to put on and off

What molle knife you carrying?
Personally, i don't think there is new feature. this is just inspire from a '' night hawk'' style of a bag. We use to modified our navy bag to have the opening at the top, instead of along the bag body, and clipped a haversack bag on the top. The compression strap were from the top to the bottom. Alice strap were clipped for the '' back packing '' mode.

What is being ripped off that most hiking packs don’t offer? Modularity, chest rigs? Military gear around the world have had this for some time. It’s good to see expansion in 5.11’s lineup.
bag looks very narrow, no good for camera cubes etc. I dont like the molle on the rush series but they are a fantastic bag. I might have to get an amp24 before they go.
I like HPG because it looks less military .
How did you attach the bear spray holster to the chest pack?

5-11 should offer the pack belt as a separate item. It looks sturdy and would be a great addition to my kit.

G'day Aaron, I do dig the direction, but a bit of a .......... mixed bag.
Like the hip belt and the inclusion of a rain cover; incidentally, I wish that belt was compatible with the Rush 12, .... out of the box anyway, ..... I'm sure it could be done with modification..
Chest rigs do make sense with regard to easy access and weight distribution, though the nuisance value in that position, together with another harness is ...... too much to bear ; )
And seems to me, this pack design almost assumes you're gonna have a chest rig to go with it, and if you dont, you're stuck with a funny hat for those items.
Bottom line, with more refinement, I reckon there's an outstanding design just waiting to emerge.

I Have a chest pack and do like the idea of it but just having the bulk sitting out in front of me seems awkward, for me anyway. I probably pack to much in it. But why have all the pockets and such if your not going to use them. So that slimmer one might be a better fit , again For Me. Love/ hate relationship , I really wanted to like mine 🤷♂️

Actually looks like a good attempt. 5.11 makes some quality stuff, but their obsession with tactical and heavy weights was always a turn off for gear. Just not a over-MOLLE'd look. For my preference, still falls short of Kuiu gear. My Kuiu Pro 60L is less than a pound heavier than this 5.11 and is built to haul out a deer. Overbuilt hip belt and shoulder straps are insanely comfortable (and visibly thicker than the 5.11). The Divide series from Kuiu is more comparable and in this price range to the 24-36L, but still has superior padding/comfort level (also removable). Really, it looks like the backpacks are copying Kuiu's design quite a bit. I actually do like the chest rig though. It's a much cheaper (and diverse) option over a chest holster, which is my ideal location to carry the 10mm when wearing a pack. As a more budget friendly option though, well done by 5.11
I don’t know besides maybe clothing I feel like with gear they have been behind the power curve, seems like they don’t innovate and just come out with stuff after others.

Cons
-big issue I have is the adjustment system. HPG is much easier to adjust the right fit. 5.11 Utility I have to take it off to set up the right fit whereas the HPG I can do it on the go.

Out of curiosity - I really like that the weight of this setup seems to be quite a bit lower than the the weight of the Hill People Gear system. I currently own an Umlindi v2. I agree with your criticisms about the awkward compression system on this pack, but do you think the 36L Skyweight pack would be worth ditching the Umlindi? I'm 6'3, so I can definitely relate to being tall. I love the versatility of HPG - but the fabric is so heavy.
That’s a great question. I am not sure since I don’t on that one currently. 36 L is a pretty large pack so unless you have a lot of equipment and may seem like a lot of access space wasted?
Ive been using the utility chest pack for yardwork, house work, camping, hiking, and I leave it loaded out with my edc pistol when I get home as a nighttime pack. The pull tab makes getting the pistol out quicker than any other ccw option.

This pack is a pick-pockets dream, huge fail on the zippers to access the main compartment on the bottom back. Don't wear this pack in an urban area.
Agree 100%. Also a problem if the zip fails or you don’t fully close it out in the wild and gear starts to fall,out the pack as you hike.

511’s products are decent quality, but not up to the standards of HPG. IMO I’ll stick with my HPG because of this and the fact it’s a small business with A++ customer service!
Only someone that’s never served would put their knife on their pack. Something happens and you are forced to drop your pack you have no knife. Next to water a knife is very important.
It depends on what you are doing. A combat patrol isn’t camping.

5.11 is heading in a good direction with this line. Agree with almost all critique points... it needs a mesh pocket on the back, the insert pockets with the lower zippers, better tension straps, etc all would make this an elite pack. I'd also like to see them add big zip pockets on the waist straps...there's certain enough room for them...for easy access to phone, wallet, keys, etc.
For about a pound more, I'll take my Mystery Ranch Raid LT 32 over foreign made 5.11's. Much better design and features.

What's wrong with 5.11? They have lots of great products, it's just fashionable in the space to diss them so people like to do it all the time. They usually make excellent products.
Hill People Gear I own tons of their stuff. And I find them way more module. The decker frames with decker pockets, bags, upon bags and panels and their prairie belt and recon belt and straps and the list so goes on. It's more technical but if u have just a bit of small skill upl be way happier and much higher quality. 5.11 did that terrible compression strap which just speaks of inexperience and not really thought thru. Hill people gear thinks of everything that works so well. Mystery ranch is also a classic that has unparalleled construction. Kifaru too. And now new companies r springing up and doin great things like cottage companies. I own soooo many packs and I started with 5.11 of which i own 6 packs of theirs. Their a beginner company and cheaper. I think their good for people starting out till they find their actual go to company. 5.11 is McDonald's of tactical and decent bags. But their not Hill People or Mystery ranch or kifaru or eberlestock, tactical tailor or even exo mountain etc etc. 5.11=McDonald's. I use my 5 11 for storage bags now. I even had a sternum strap totally snap off of one of my rush 72s. Bad design to the plastics of how it hooks onto the shoulder straps .

Working on a military base where a navy seal compound and where they do sniper training for the spec ops teams, I’ve seen and asked a lot about what bags they use and what works for them in the field actual tactical use. @@gideonstactical true, but I will go out of my way and spend more to buy products made with American labor with US owned businesses. Hill People Gear is made right down the road from me in Fenton Missouri at First Spear. Spending my money "local" not only ovoids supporting countries that dislike us, but helps the economy and ultimately myself. Not to mention 99 times out of 100 I am getting a superior product. I don't mind products from Japan or other friendly nations. I think it our moral responsibility to spend money with companies that allign with our values. Your mileage may vary, Unfortunately most people are just thinking about saving a few bucks not looking at the long term ramifications.
5.11 is the harbor freight of tactical gear. HPG and MR are going to be just fine.

Chest rigs in general you’re correct, as far as bags HPG doesn’t come close to 5.11. And as for mystery ranch just because something costs more doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better product.
I would argue the rush bags are way more versatile then anything mystery ranch has to offer just my opinion.
