Surviving the Chill: Staying Cozy Winter Camping

- In this week's video, we headed into the Chippewa National Forest in search of solitude. Life can feel exhausting with the constant chatter from people and social media. So, I'm going to do a mental reset by getting away from it all, and I'm bringing you with.
While loading up the camper Tuesday night, I forgot the ice auger......I had one job to do!! But it was ok because the ice was only 6 inches thick. My drone had another mishap, but i resloved the issue. At least I was able to catch something with the fishing pole. One day, I'll invest into a drone with anti-collision technology.
With all that being said, Mother Nature decided to reward my efforts with an amazing sunset and a beautiful shot of the northern lights. We will go ice fishing again soon. I would like to make it a catch and cook video on day.
I'm so thankful that I have the ability to escape into the wild and check out from society. I really want to thank everyone for the letters and gifts. Your kind words give me the motivation to make an adventure every weekend.

The artichoke recipe:
Two 14oz cans of artichoke hearts. (Not marinated)
Drain and chopped up.
One cup of sour cream
One cup of mayonnaise
16oz of softened cream cheese
Two and a half cups of freshly grated parmesan cheese
Garlic......one clove.... or four, depending on what a clove is.
Dill weed to taste.
Preheat grill, oven, or smoker to 350 degrees F
Mix sour cream, mayo, cream cheese, garlic, and 2 cups of parmesan cheese. Stir until your arm falls off, or until the cream cheese is smooth.
Put the dip in a baking pan. It will sweal up a little bit, so don't overload the pan. I used two bread tins.
Sprinkle remaining half cup of cheese on top with a little bit of dill weed. (Dill weed is not necessary)
Bake for 20 minutes or until hot and bubbly. - Zábava

It's artichoke country around here. Castroville, Ca is just down the road. My mom used to make these deep fried artichoke hearts. She would get bags of these small artichokes, cut out the hearts. Drench them in a batter of butter, garlic, parmesan cheese, then fry them.... A once a year treat... unless you want cardiac arrest.

With your rig, you would have maximum access to about 23 million acres of public land.
Or so I am told..lol my butt is parked on a mountain that would take years to explore all the sites.
Anyways…good food, good film, good friends..can’t ask for more than that!

What is the move called when you set up shots to show you coming and going?
I assume you are driving away from the camera, but then go back and retrieve it. Clean it up in the edit.
But what is that called? When I fist started watching, I assumed it was another person with you.
But obviously that is not right.
Either way, it must take ALOT of time. My favorite is when you drive over your camera. That’s just cooool!

I appreciate you going back and watching the older videos. I know the first year or so are a little cringy....I have learned a lot about editing and recording over the last few years. When I started, I had zero experience. I bought a used gopro 9 off eBay and a 500 dollar laptop off Craigslist. I didn't own a computer prior to the channel.
That's exactly how I do it. I have no clue what's it's called. I try to pick up editing ideas when I watch movies. I find movies have the best transitions.

That's for setting me straight! Thankfully, it wasn't overpowering. I'm glad I didn't put the whole bulb in.
@@KennyOfAllTrades As soon as you asked that in the video I had a flashback to when my oldest daughter was in college and had her first apartment. She and her roomie were following a recipe that called for three cloves. Yup, same as you they didn't know the difference and they put in three whole heads. Sadly the dinner turned out inedible and ended up in the garbage. Lesson learned and now years later it's a fun story that even she laughs at.
@TheOtherBill lol. Yep, that sounds exactly like something I would do. A few years back, I had to bring cheesy potatoes to our family Christmas dinner. I read the recipe wrong and used 3 tablespoons of salt rather than 3 teaspoons. I wrecked that dish too!

When you pulled that sled out of your truck I thought how is he going to fish without an auger....lol. Good thing you had an axe. I was blown away by the lack of snow, but yeah, great for making good ice.

I camp in the back of my 97 toyota 4runner and love it.
Those are awesome vehicles. We don't see many up here, but I loved all my Toyotas. The old 22R's were awesome little engines.

Mr. Kenny, this is my second of your videos ive watched in 2 days, wouldn't have really any comment, But I saw the timestamp on this post, December 1st. My Father's Birthday was December 1st, 1926. He would have been 97 this year. He was born in Oakland California. I was born in Oakland California in 1967 to him and his wife, my Mother.
..the fun thing I didn't snap to until I was a young Married man, myself. 😂 The math? Between 12/1/1066 and August 2nd, 1967?
When I made the connection I was 😳, then 😂, then 👍🤟🤙.

Being from AZ I can't even imagine walking out on that frozen lake!! When I was younger I lived in northern Montana for a few years, but when the temp one winter fell to -40 one day that was it for me cuz that was the HIGH for that winter day! My oldest brother loves that cold weather though. He's been up there for nearly 40 years. Married with kids and a first grandchild on the way. I watch CZcams from the comfort of my room with a heating pad on my chair and a small space heater for my feet :) Just the way I like it! Thanks for sharing your vlogs!
Come up to the Show Low area, and do some ice fishing, brother. Places in New Mexico, not far, either.
Time to John-innovate !!! Bring my John-firecan kit (rocket stove) onto the lake. Bring lengthy copper tubing. Closed loop tubing. Place over the rocket stove and superheat the air which circulates to dropped copper tubing into the vertical water column creating warmed water that the fish will swim to and get warm (and get hungry). Then drop down some warm lure bait - and catch a gob of fish in that area !!!

I have a question. Going down those back roads have you ever encountered another camper coming at you?
Yes, it can happen, rarely campers... more often ATVs. The guy with the biggest rig usually gets to keep going. I'm always looking for pulloffs on my way in. Sometimes, you have to back up 1/2 mile in order to pull off and let the other pass. I have got into areas where we will meet head-on. We will both sit and look at each other for a few seconds, knowing that there's no pulloffs. That's when I'll get out and inform the other driver of why I can't back up. It's never been an issue. It gets harder at night when it's completely dark.
Once a week i get to settle in and relax for half an hour. Thank you brother for bringing us along and letting us sit back and remember that the simple things will always be the best!

Fellow Minnesotan here who now resides in Virginia. My first thought on the lake was how much I wish I could Ice skate again on the lakes, especially with no snow! My sister sent me a picture the other day of the lakes frozen with no snow on her drive to the cities. The little girl in my wants my ice skates again! Thanks Kenny, we enjoy your videos!

I still have the Onan. It's ao darn loud. And it's still finicky to start. I have to play with the throttle to get it going. Once it's running, it's completely fine.
You make that fire - and they will come (in that 21F temperature). Bigfoots will come to toast their feets, hands, and butts !!! Make new friends in the winter cold !
Of course with the fire and wood smoke - you'll have the largest vicinity of "wanderers" coming into the camp also wanting to warm up their feet, hands, and butts ... not something you want to happen with new friends in the winter cold - and them wanting to also get a free meal and drinks off from you ....

I live in Scotland, and although we are way up north, the gulf stream and climate change means we never get ice thick enough to fish through or really walk on . Its always been my dream to go ice fishing . Thanks for taking us along . Love your videos

My wife used to fret when th truck and trailer got scratched. I always thought it gave them character.

Kenny, I live in Wichita Kansas and it's warmer down here than it is in Minnesota, but I'm still envious of the camping opportunities you have there. You answered yourself. One section is a clove. The whole thing is a bulb. I can’t wait for your taste. I bet it is pretty garlicky putting in the whole bulb! I think you should try adding some chopped fresh spinach, to make it even better.

I used to go up there as a young man. I've done a few 2 week Portages.That is some truly pristine wilderness.
It's too bad that the National Park service has banned recording without proper permits. I couldn't even make a video if I wanted to. Well.....if I paid for the application and provided a detailed itinerary of recording locations and times, I could see if they approve it. Then, if it is approved, I could pay for the required permits and shoot the video. The Department of Interior has really made it hard to push record on my Gopro in national parks.

I wish that too! She works on the weekends and is at that age where she likes spending time with friends. I really miss my babies. They grow up so fast. The first video she was 15 and up for anything! Her second video, she was 16 and was turning into a great young lady. This last video she was 18 and growing up too fast!

Love your videos. very relaxing watching them. Concerning your Gen Set up front. I went a different route. I do not have solar either. But I built in a 3000 watt inverter under the back seat of the truck. I have 2 gauge wire going up to the jump start tab between the two batteries. I also added Anderson Connectors front and back of the truck at the same time using the same 2 gauge wire so I can run a winch upfront or behind, and the truck camper batteries charge off the "Anderson Plug In" as well. My 3000 Watt inverter runs the air conditioner on the roof of my camper, powers the microwave and even going down the road, the truck camper thinks its plugged into shore power, so all the outlets work, the fridge will run on AC instead of gas, and I leave an electric heater on in the back while traveling in cold climates. I like not having one more power unit to maintain. Works for me. Lithium battery bank in the future.
