  • Identify metabolic issues that arise as we age and how they affect our ability to lose weight.
This is part one of a three-part series. In parts two and three we’ll discuss fat loss strategies that work despite our age, and practical food swaps that make the whole process easy, enjoyable, and effective. I hope you'll join me!
Lose Weight After 50 (Part 2 of 3): 7 Fat Loss Strategies that Work: • Lose Weight After 50 (...
Losing Weight After 50 (Part 3 of 3): Low Carb/High-Fat Food Swaps • Losing Weight After 50...
As we age, we accumulate metabolic disadvantages like a slower BMR, injuries, and hormonal issues (menopause or lower testosterone). While these issues may slow the rate at which our bodies lose weight, they do not prevent weight loss. And, these issues are not significantly changed by what we eat.
However, there are two metabolic disadvantages that impact our ability to burn fat that can be influenced by our diet: Insulin Resistance and Poor Gut Health. In this video, I explain why these issues block fat loss and set the stage for parts 2 and 3 of our series on Losing Weight after 50.

Keto has done me the world of good. I started keto 5 months ago and my body has reverted back to my normal weight and appearance: slim and healthy. I am a 63y/o British Australian woman, 5'9" tall, and young looking for my age, so losing the few inches of heaviness that I'd gained in the last 6 years by taking up keto means my body works extraordinarily well now, all glory to God who led me here. I was a sugar addict and have nothing to do with the stuff any more!

I am so tired of the attitude that I ate poorly & that's why I have type 2 diabetes and have gained weight. This couldn't be further from the truth. Since 1971, I've educated myself about nutrition, grown my own organic gardens & eaten health food products. Rarely eating sugary products & never using white (refined) flour products or baking with white flour & sugars. I used honey or maple syrup in small amounts. I always ate & eat natural fats, with butter & olive oils being topmost favourites. I've habitually eaten nutritionally excellent food all of my adult life. I lived a very healthy lifestyle because type 2 was diagnosed later in life in all of my family members. By the time I reached 60, in spite of my efforts, I too am diagnosed with it. I am attempting to kick it to the curb, with keto & IF. Wish me luck.

I have severe arthritis of the lumbar spine due to scoliosis. I used to take a lot of pain meds which I found out, screwed up my testosterone and thyroid levels. My doctor took me off the high doses of pain meds and the weight started to come off much more easily. My energy has returned and even though the pain is still there, I am much more equipped to handle it. I just turned 58.

Pushing 50, have been meticulously low-carbing, consuming moderate protein and higher quality fats, and cutting calories for about three months. Even with low-level hormonal replacement therapy for both reproductive and thyroid hormones, aside from initial water weight - haven't lost a pound. Also tested negative for insulin resistance. I'm getting enough sleep, not particularly stressed. No other health issues. I've been exhausted for years, after Lyme disease - and am still mostly exhausted.
At a complete loss as to why I'm not losing weight... something I desperately need to do, to address high blood pressure and fatty liver.

I started Keto on Jan 7 after eating whole food plant based for 14 mos. I am 63 and currently weigh 233 lbs. I ate whole food plant based so that I could get off the buffet of meds I was on during and after cancer treatment. I achieved that goal and now don't take any meds. However, I wasn't losing weight anymore, started feeling fatigued, and overall, just not feeling as great as I should. I was losing hair for about 7 mos. or more, so I began to wonder if a vegan lifestyle wasn't meant for me. After much anguish and concern, and research, I finally reached a comfortable place in my keto journey and decided I would treat this like an experiment. I still struggle with meat in my mouth, and dairy in my meals, but it's becoming easier. My concern is that I've only lost 6 lbs after almost a month, and apparently no inches. I measured, believe me. Is this normal ? I know my body is probably in shock and now has to figure out how to use fat instead of carbs and that takes time. I was just wondering if others experienced the same. All this macro stuff and trying to figure out how much fat to eat while trying to be mindful of the calories is VERY confusing. The more videos I watch, the more confused I get. HELP ! Oh, I also mostly eat once a day, sometime 2, so I suppose I have incorporated intermittent fasting into this diet. I eat when I'm hungry, I stop when I'm full. I usually have a 5 hour eating window, most times less.

50 is still pretty young. Many people these days look great at 50. 60 and 70 is more of a challenge. Slower metabolism and changes in skin tone and muscle mass. Start good habits early and stick with them.

I am in desperate need to loose weight. I am a disabled (spinal and hip chronic pain d/t chronic injuries and compression and other damage from working as a nurse), 57 year old woman (pic is of my skinny husband! lol). I don't overeat. In fact I do not eat but between 500 - 100 kCal/day. But I am very mobility limited and am oven bed ridden. Exercising even the chair exercises are so hard for me. I am bed ridden usually a couple of days after I do try to follow chair exercise videos for disabled/elderly people. I just want me back! I've never been overweight in my entire life until I had to quit working about 10 years ago. I am post menopausal, having had to have a hysterectomy in my early 40's. Any help for someone on disability with no money for medical assistance or personal trainers. This one time caregiver is now in dire need of help and I have no one to help me now.

So far I’ve lived through diets of burger with cottage cheese, Tab, sugar free jello and Snackwell fat free cookies. That into was all wrong. I wonder what health experts will say in 20 years about Keto and IF?

Other factors are boredom eating like my husband! His gut is so big but if I say something like no, there is no more food, we had enough he comes back with why, you are fat, why pick on me! I am not fat, am 5'11" and weigh 70kg. Would not like to be fatter and keep a good eye on it with a weigh in weekly!

We are same age Doctor as we born same year 1967. Yes I’m fighting for my health especially when had sciatica since nov 2019. I’m improving with sciatica after following a lot of stretching. Yes not easy to loose weight at 89kg but I change life style being vegan since 2012 when I had stroke and paralyse. I improved now doctor and I glad I did it. No meat, no fast food, no fried food avoid all process food because it’s best cook on your own much more healthier. At least 60% food are fruit and veggies and 40% carbohydrates, less carbohydrates is better.. , good sleep and good exercise as walking is the best for every morning. Thanks god I’m good now at weight 68kg. Drink more green tea avoid all sugary food and diary products coz its process too. I took amway products as my supplement of vitamins. Start take calsium magnesium 600mg too not more for the bone because gave another impact on the bone. But Doctor info on woman over 50s also help me because it’s guidelines for me to get better. Thank you Doctor😎👍

Dr. Becky, I tested with Keto Mojo at noon today (Fasting) and my blood glucose was 80 mg/l and my ketone reading was 2.2. So to get a GKI number I divide 80 mg/l by 18 to get a mmol/l number which was 4.44444 and divide that by my ketone mmol/l number and got a 2.020202 and that number on the GKI is good, right? Thank you in advance for answering this question, I just want to be sure I’m calculating it right.
