Hurricane Shutters | Install Yourself and Save!

- In this video I pick up and install hurricane roll down shutters on a Florida concrete block stucco home. The process is not difficult as long as you have some basic tools like a ladder, hammer drill, impact driver and level. I ended up doing one every couple days for nearly a month to get them done. Once you get the first one up and experience the process they go quicker. I was able to do all except one by myself. The one I needed help with my wife was able to help hold the roll to get it slid into the box and track. The weight of the roll was too much on a 6 foot tall window. Thanks for supporting the channel and please sub and like of you find value in the video. Thanks!!
There are several online businesses that will take your measurements and produce your shutters. These came from Empire Construction in Sunrise Florida.

Thank you for making and posting this video! Videos like this help others avoid pitfalls and things first timers might not think of. So valuable and much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
@@bobbygfl do you know where I can buy a used eight foot wide roll down shutter
Good video for DYIers, definitively helpful.
I actually do this for a living, if you appreciate advice, here I’ll leave you some.
Since you already paid for the shutters, go ahead and buy a rotary hammer for $150~$200. It is a very different animal than a regular hammer drill. You won’t have to lean heavily against the wall with those and also everything is fun and games until you hit rebar.
If you strip the hole just use a zip tie or two to shim the tapcon
When choosing the tapcons to use always go for the ones that are threaded from the tip to the head even if they are shorter by 1 inch. They hold better in hollow walls.
When adjusting the shutter curtain with the hand crank mechanism just use a leftover rod long enough to be attached to your regular drill. Ask the manufacturer to send you an extra one.
If you do all this and get a helper you will finish the job before lunch time, I promise
Thank you! Great tips. The helper would have awesome. This took me days to complete. If a few a day and be done lol. I really really appreciate the other tips. Those Tapcons were actually provided by the manufacturer. And I have since picked up a rotary hammer and you’re right what a difference.
I purchased used hurricane shutters and of course it didn't come with instructions. This is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Glad it helped!
where did you buy them ?
@@peterthurston6149 found it on Craigslist.
Super video! Great info as I'm planning on doing the same myself. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Good video. The install looks a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. I have a house in Tornado alley. I will look into this for us. Have a nice day.
Glad it helped
Excellent job at teaching us. Thank you for the video. I gained a lot of knowledge. 😇👍
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Great video Bobby( for those who are handy enough to install theirs selves), for those in South Florida who can not- feel free to contact us. total hurricane shutters
Thanks!
Thank you for the video.
Thanks!
Excelent video thanks for your time and info
Thanks!
Hi Bobby,
I watched this video. I am impressed with what you did. I will tell you that I think the manufacturer set you up for failure on these rollups. I recommend that you go back and put a few more tapcons in the box and bottom 1 x 3 angle. There should be tapcons 3" from each edge and then 8" apart to center (per FBC). Also, get your self and SDS Hammer drill and an 8" and 12" sds masonry bit that drill will reduce the installation time frame per window to about 20 minutes.
Before you ask, yes I am a Hurricane Shutter contractor. I always use the maxiset tapcon on every part of the rollup shutter system. I would never use a Phillips screw on any part of a shutter because I've seen my guys get cut with the bits when the screws fly off.
Good job!
That’s great advise. Thank you. The manufacturer was really no help. I can see your point in installing more tap cons across the top box. That’s a relatively easy fix just pulling the cover off the box with the shutter in the down position should give enough access. Anyway thanks for the compliment and the tips. As you know I saved a ton of money!!
I would use some construction adhesive all around to make sure no moisture builds up and of course to help the tapcons
@@riftvalley1765 maybe fill the hole with caulking before putting in the tapcon. That'll keep moisture out as well.
Mike what area do you work in?
Thanks Bobby nice video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Good video well laid out instructions.noooiiiice!!!
Glad you liked it!
Great video! We are moving to Panama City when we retire next year and will be installing some form of window and door hurricane protection. I really like the manual roll up shutter like these. I think I can handle this since I am a licensed contractor in MD and PA. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Good luck with the project.
nice job
thank you!
As always, I enjoy watching and learning from all your videos! Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do! i appreciate that!
I have been interested in installing these but not much info out there.
Thanks for the preview of what to expect.
They look good 👍
Glad to help
nice video!! In Germany, these are installed in every house as standard on all windows, they are real all-rounders.
Thanks!
A lot of high winds in Deutschland?
Great to see the install process and have much of your thoughts. Did you consider having these operable from the inside and if so what were the trade offs and additional efforts necessary? (my purposes wouldn't include hurricanes)
I did consider it and for the trouble of drilling through the tie beam and having to deal with the Dry Wall and the fitting to keep the bugs out I would’ve just gone with electric. You literally walk around and lower them once a year maybe. I was trying to do this for the cheapest possible price and the most protection.
Thanks for the video, been contemplating this for a while. Did you consider the shutters that have the lowering mechanism on the inside or motorized?
If I was using them for anything other than hurricane protection I would’ve definitely considered motorized. We have four motorized shutters that we use all the time. Mainly the ones around are the outdoor patio we keep down to keep the area clean. We literally raise and lower them every day. Also those are fabric the Kevlar style hurricane screens. If the power went out and there was a fire we could cut our way out. If these are down you’re trapped. I really don’t think I would lower these unless I was evacuating. Thanks for the comment!!
You just made it look really easy, thank you so much for sharing, I just picked up 13 of these from Miami and looking around how to install them, mine are really heavy and large ones so I definitely need a helper. Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you!
Great tutorial, expecting mine by end of month and was debating on if I had to hire a HD contractor or not. Might just need electrician since motorized with manual override.
Glad it was helpful!
Well, you showed me how to fix my one side that blew out without taking the thing apart
Awesome thanks for the comment
Great job. Do you mind sharing the maufacturer or vendor?
The manufacturer was in sunrise Florida. You will need to Google it I am not sure of the name.
Bobby, great video on the installation, just what I am looking to do. Any hints on which manufacturer and about where about they are?, if you don't mind or maybe the area of Florida they are, I am in Sarasota. Thank you for your video and info.
These came from empire construction in sunrise Florida. Google them. I drove over and picked them up to save shipping.
Nice job! I was wondering if you could fine a place that would make these to order so you can install them yourself. Did you have an option to purchase motorized it you wanted to? I have one window I would like to get motorized just to block out the sun in the afternoons. Thanks again !
Yes. They did offer motorized. Thanks!
Great job. I'm considering doing my own install as well. I had a couple quotes and they want close to $20K including install in SW FL. Do you mind sharing what these cost you to buy? Thanks for the video i'm gonna save it for future reference.
In the 6k range. I was shocked. And thanks!
If a burglar showed up with a cordless drill and a few batteries he could break in .
Lol. Not for security but thanks for the comment!
5/8 plywood is more effective, though these are slightly more convenient.
This is all about convenience. Drop and done.
I used 1/2" plywood when I built mine in 2004. They were heavy then. Now I'm 20 years older and they're much heavier!
My manual roll up shutter universal is free spinning, any advice? Trying to DIY to save $
Take the cover off. The set screw on the gear could’ve just simply come loose.
Great video! What's the name and location of the company that sold you these shutters?
In the description, empire construction in sunrise Florida
Do you know if these shutters can be extended if you accidentally ordered them too short?
There’s a little bit of wiggle room. As far as adding slats that something you would have to have them do because of the machine that slides the slats together and then crimps the ends
Do you really need all those screws in the uprights?
They say yes. It’s on there!
Where did you get the material? And about how much was one window?
I got everything from a shutter company in sunrise Florida. Just google shutter manufactures. About 300.00 per window for on the size in the video.
Any update on the factory tour? I am also in Florida, but I can’t find a mfr in Sunrise?
Just google hurricane shutters sunrise fl. The owner would not let me tour the factory. The obvious reason to me was osha violations…. Like I said in the video, this purchasing experience was fine at best. The shutters work.
Can you give a ball park price you paid for the larger window?
Probably about 500
What percentage would you say you saved on cost? 25-30 percent?
Over 50% Easily. Especially in today’s ridiculous labor world. But back when I made this video, the quotes were 50% higher.
would you be able to install it for others too for a fee?
No, too many projects of my own! Thanks for the comment!
Where can I find the handle? I lost mine. Thank you.
Amazon has a pretty good selection.
This is the hard way
Totally agree
How much did it cost $$$?
About 5k for all of them. Quotes were anywhere from 15 to 30k!
This guy sounds like he’s from California.
Florida.
@@bobbygfl I guess I talk like a valley girl sometimes too and I don’t even realize it. It’s not a big deal, I’m just talking trash I guess.
Lol. All good.
Hii am very interested your sutther work am from india i have 3 +7yrs experience in gulf countries in india am installer rolling shutters aluminium interior design faced please reply me 🙏🏿
Thanks for the comment. Good luck with your business.
Same story...... different players, but same story for many products on the market. I thought I saw the kid in a video selling mosquito repellents.
Lol. Thanks for the comment. It’s good be handy
Can you please provide the company name, phone, and location?
It’s in sunrise Florida. Empire, construction and development is the name of the company. I don’t know the phone number but you can Google them.
Great Video! Thank you - New SUBSCRIPTION - This is gonna happen soon.
Thank you!
Why not show us how to do the measurements? Pretty much stopped watching after you said that because then what's the point?
My thinking was if you do not know how to use a tape measure you should probably hire someone for the whole job. Thanks for the comment!
Or have common sense
This is why I let the pros do it this is the worse way I’ve seen a shutter installed
This was a financial decision certainly not a convenient one.
So, then, what is the best way for DIY?
Great video. Can you post info of where you bought this for the DIYer? Cant seem to find a vendor in SF that would sell directly to consumer. MDC and Broward because hurricane codes are mandatory, these, to the best of my knowledge require a license installer. Elsewhere in Hurricane codes are voluntary and the DIYer can probably install. Thank you.
Try hurricane shutter dealers in sunrise, Florida
@@bobbygfl TY for the response. They usually dont sell directly to end-users but sell and install altogether.
