The Bizarre Life Of Sri Anandamayi Ma

  • Anandamayi Ma literally means ‘Bliss-permeated Mother’. It was as early as 1920s that people close to her began to realize the essence of Mother Divine in her, and started calling her ‘Mataji’ or often, just ‘Ma’. It was one of her early disciples, called Bhaiji, who gave her the title of ‘Ma Anandamayi’, meaning, ‘Mother, full of Bliss’. Soon, people all over the country and from different quarters of the world who flocked to her for spiritual illumination started calling her Anandamayi Ma, or ‘Bliss-permeated Mother’.
    Birth and Early Life
    On April 30, 1896, in a remote rural village of Kheora in East Bengal, a girl child was born to a poor but devout Vaishnava Brahmin couple. They named her ‘Nirmala Sundari’, meaning ‘immaculate beauty’, or ‘Taintless Beauty’.
    According to Prof. Bithika Mukherjee, the principal biographer of Anandamayi Ma, she was a very detached child right from early years, showing little interest in her surrounding environment. People often thought she was intellectually challenged (Aymard 11).
    But this detachment did not mean any withdrawal from life. Nirmala Sundari was indeed a very happy child. She communed with animals and trees, like St Francis of Assissi, and often fell into spiritual trances.
    At the age of 13, Nirmala Sundari was married to a much older person, Ramani Mohan Chakravarty. He later became her disciple, and she called him ‘Bholanath’, one of the names for Lord Shiva.
    Ma went through her marriage life with complete commitment, treating her husband like a devoted wife. But she never consummated her marriage with sexual union or procreation. It is said that whenever the thoughts of physical attraction and lust occurred to her husband, Ma’s body would assume the terrible and awe-inspiring form of the Goddess Kali, and the poor husband would retreat in submission and guilt.
    Bholanath was troubled and frustrated at first, but was gradually convinced that his wife was in fact a manifestation of the Divine Mother. He later took spiritual initiation from his wife and began to relate to her as his guru. In a remarkable reversal from the perspective of dharmasastra, or the Hindu code, he spent the rest of his life as his wife's disciple, caring for her physical well-being, as she seemed completely uninterested in her body, and mediating between her and her growing number of devotees

      @@azsetik9907 Namastey 🙏. It's so good to know that someone somewhere wants to know about my experiences of being so close to Ma and I'll happily share those moments with everybody who wants to know. I still remember the day of my 'diksha'. It was on the 22 of June 1973. I was 9. I entered a big room that smelled of sandlewood and incense. Ma was sitting on the floor in the centre and asked me to come and sit in front of her. I went near her and stood there with my 'asana' tucked under my arm not knowing what to do. She took my asana from me and very lovingly spread it on the floor in front of her and asked me to sit on it. As I sat, she asked me whom would I like to pray to and whispered a mantra asking me to repeat. After I did that she put her hand on the top of my head and gently pushed it down to rest on her feet. My diksha was complete. I was too young to understand or perceive the significance of that event back then. My grandmother asked her for a pair of her used sandals. Ma obliged. My grandmother kept those sandals in her cupboard with great care. When I got married she passed them on to me. I have had Ma's used sandals in my prayer room since the past 30 years. In all these years ( probably 50 or more), the sandals don't look worn out or withered. The colour has darkened a little, but they are still a strong pair of footwear! Strange.. as any piece of cloth or paper would show signs of aging. And since the past 30 years , I have cleaned those sandals, lay my head on them and even shed tears on them during my times of distress. Everytime Ma has offered me solace, peace and a way out of my puzzled, problem life. Everytime I touch those sandles, I remember Ma's touch on my head and my head bowing to touch her feet. It fills me with strength, courage, peace, solace and everything positive that sees me through all the blows that life keeps hurling from time to time. Ma is the supreme energy within me that has helped me brave many storms, fight raging seas and shaped me to the person I am today, strong, confident, compassionate and brave. That is the power of my Guru.
      This was a bit too long and thank you for your time and patience. May you always be blessed.

      From Man-centredness to God-centredness, I have never heard put so directly.
      I have often said we must return to religion and seek the advice of saints, rather than psychological treatment… but God centeredness, that is so absolutely unmistakable as the point. We are sick because we think of how we may please ourselves rather than God. The minute we extend ourselves and try to endeavor to please God we smack into the intense smallness, frailty and helplessness of being human, our limitedness causes to fail at that endeavor immediately and as soon as our pride breaks us we fall to pieces. From that spot we seek forgiveness for what we imagine to be our great accumulation of sin, then and only then do we see that all God wishes is for us to open to infinite love and to share the love we receive with others, in other words God love for us is boundless and his only standard is to love ourselves as he loves us. He shows us that we are complete and in that we need do nothing but recognize that our nature has always been perfect and we have strived so hard under shame and fear to be worthy of father and mother love and acceptance when we are inherently worthy.
      In that space of eternal worthiness is the fullness of meaning and contentment with outer and inner. When we rest content in boundless meaning ever unfolding worthiness outside and inside like an ever flowing water fall of pure beauty. That is when bliss is met face to face, bliss arises as the truth and meaning of everything when everything is appreciated In it’s essence as the infinite stainless space of primordial purity.
      We can’t ever know it until we give ourselves to Gods single commandment, love self and other, care for my children. Until we make God the center of life we will default to personal happiness at the center of life and because that happiness is personal and relative to the body. Our methods can never know transcendence and our definition of happiness can never transcend individual and personal material forms. Good and Evil arise from knowledge of self devoid of God’s infinite acceptance and existence of and as everything. We see everything in terms of our own personal notion of what is good and bad and so carve up the world into friend and enemy, good and bad. So instead of a religious life where good is to forgive and love, we live in politics where good is what aligns with our values and personal beliefs. We mistake the errors of our time as eternal, we see everyone as being stuck in the moment we occupy. We don’t ever see how the one who harms or the harm itself being a cause and inspiration for acts of healing and forgiveness. We see the Devils of this world as only needless causes of suffering rather than the essential partners of their opposites. If nobody was hurting compassion could not arrive, if there were no errors, forgiveness could not arise. If their were no poor than generosity could not arise. When we see everything as having equal value both good and bad being in their rightful place, as harm being the soil from which healing grows. When we see the completeness and essential nature of everything as being wholly necessary to drive beings to virtue, then and only then will we be at peace. And only from peace can bliss arise as a permanent fixture of our life. Until that day there will be only enemies. Even is we drive enemies away our mindset will look for new ones because we in our inner life have no cause for bliss until we know the entirety as primordial pure creation of God.
      We will seek disagreements simply so we can feel correct, righteous and intelligent. We will scold people so we can feel wise and knowing. We will be angry so we can feel we are on the side of the good. But if we believed and knew all was good and good was all there is, then everything is on the way to holiness, step by step it is all a pilgrimage, no matter how evil a manifestation is in the moment, if we trust in God’s plan to engineer every soul into sainthood through the poetry of circumstance, we will still rest at ease in our heart, even if we are heartbroken and full of negativity if we have seen God’s bliss and trust it is always there, if we know the great Guru is the ground of being and trust in the enlightened intent of creation then we will always have that golden thread pulling us slowly through the darkness and uncertainty. Because our troubles are just part of the play of the divine, our happiness is temporary but Gods love is the center of our lives. We had already made the decision to live a God centered life and so if we must suffer in his service then their is no meaningless suffering, all our hardships are boundless in their meaning because they are in service of the meaning of meaning, beauty of beauty, and love of love in God. That is the small window where fleshy human beings can view the ever radiant transcendent joy of bliss that is knowledge of God’s boundless love for us.
      May we all find that and wield that truth as a light and torch to guide and help self and other in the darkness that is incarnation.
      Sarwa Mangalam

      You should consider a pilgrimage to her samadhi shrine. If you do decide to do so.
      Follow these instructions. Take an austerity for a determined period of time. For example.
      1) Give alcohol and sex and meat for 90 days.
      2) Take it upon yourself, without anyone's support, to make some heartfelt prayer, at the same time, once, twice, or three times a day, every day from when you begin your austerities through your pilgrimage to India and until after your return to the USA.
      3) Ask for her blessing in some matter important to you. Ask her, or ask God, or ask both as they are one and the same. Tell no one of this. Remember God with form is the Guru, God without form is the nameless formless infinite light.
      Have faith in your practice, and in your intention. Tell no one of your spiritual practices until after you have completed them for any length of time, and even then speak of them without pride. Modestly.
      Humility leads to wisdom. Good luck. (Yes, I followed my own advice in April of 1980. I met my Guru the following month. He took Mahasamadhi the same year as Ma, in 1982. It was a busy year.)
      Peace.

The problem is that we worship the “persons” and not the teachings…. Many realized entities have warned us about this. Somehow most people have somehow convinced themselves that realization is far beyond their grasp in this lifetime… Ignorance is the greatest enemy of mankind today….

    I had a vision once when under intense stress and crying out to God for help internally. I felt soon after like I was talking with God, as in the ultimate creator of everything. 2 things that seem important and worth sharing was how we all have different stories and just generally an understanding of allowing people to be as they are. It was explained that "they"(not completely understood..Gods/angels/higher entities/different aspects of God) were learning to build bridges. This filled me with absolute awe and excitement. I kept repeating..really, oh how beautiful, oh how wonderful. Really .. I'm so happy you are building bridges.. After awhile i was told that i was a bridge builder. In my head at that time, this idea of building bridges meant that the different world religions, which i mostly thought of as Eastern and Western religions/philosophies would one day come together in union, the gap would be bridged. I am often turned off by how many evangelical christians that i regularly interact with see their way as the only way and they dismiss all others as being misguided. I do not know much about Hinduism as it seems to have a million different thoughts, but that in itself makes sense. I do not know the ultimate answers but i do have a feeling we really are all one. I think actions are what matter and the idea of being God centered instead of self centered is worthy of striving towards, no matter your story/path. I pray for all of us.

    • @dnag02
      @dnag02 Před rokem +6

      Wrong Gandhi was not a spiritual giant. Sri Aurobindo was a spiritual giant. Do your research. Google Sri Aurobindo on Gandhi. Find out what Anandamoyee Maa once expressed how she while in Bhimtaal in her subtle body met Sri Aurobindo on another plane. Gandhi and his failed policy of muslim appeasement and open support of khilaphat movement set the stage for bloody partition of India. Sri Aurobindo was India's most sagacious leader and a spiritual giant. Read what he wrote about how crazy MK Gandhi was. Gandhi was portrayed as a great man by the Nehrus and the Gandhis (muslims with hindu names as Natwar Singh revealed in his memoire) and hara... marxist liberals who distorted indian history in history books that we were taught in history classes. Gandhi was the most deceptive leader that most leader did not know how crazy he was. Only Sri Aurobindo and Dr Ambedkar knew about Gandhi.

    • @dnag02
      @dnag02 Před rokem +1

      The greatness of Sri Aurobindo was that he was not only a spiritual giant but the savvyest of all leaders in politics. He was the only leader who knew and wrote about how super crazy MK Gandhi was. Dr Ambedkar also knew Gandhi was not a mahatma. Paramahansa Yogananda like Tagore and other great men was never in politics so he did not know like Sri Aurobindo knew that Gandhi was a super crazy leader.

    • @teach-learn4078
      @teach-learn4078 Před rokem +1

      @@dnag02 That's pretty interesting. I read Aurobindo on Gandhi as you suggested, and the Wikipedia article on Aurobindo, so I'm no expert. I know very little about how the events transpired in those decades leading to Indian Independence, I admit my ignorance of the details, and I might be inspired to learn more.
      Also my comment was about Yogananda.
      However I think more importantly it seems to me in our conversation we would need to come to some definition of terms in order to proceed, and that in itself may prove impossible. The key term is "spiritual giant." What do you mean by that? What makes someone a spiritual giant?
      Clearly it can't be evaluated on how successful that person was in tangible 3-D material world terms. Or can it? For example Jesus, was he a "spiritual giant"? He certainly was a failure in terms of what he achieved e.g. politically in his lifetime. You could also say he "laid the groundwork" for the Crusades, which led to so many unnecessary death (?).
      I think we can say neither Aurobindo nor Gandhi are at the level of Nityananda of Ganesh Puri, or Gautama Buddha. Those two had very little to say about contemporary earthly matters at all. On the other hand I believe both Gandhi and Aurobindo were more spiritual giants than I am. Meanwhile I am "giant" compared to some people living on this planet at this time.
      From what I've understood so far, Aurobindo's main criticism of Gandhi was ultimately how effective it is. Do you reason with the snake or the scorpion, or do you kill them? Today we still have that question vexing us mightily. The Kshatriya class never did expunge evil in this world, so I'm not sure how effective that approach has been either, maybe time will still tell in the months and years to come.
      As a final question though I'll ask whether you've done your research as well - have you personally read Gandhi's autobiography Experiments With Truth? Or have you formed your conclusion merely on the basis of what others have said about Gandhi? In other words, what do you think about that book, what specific points might you make about it that are really your own thinking?
      Cheers,

    • @teach-learn4078

      @@dnag02 I can't seem to reply to your latest post directly under that post so I'll reply here.
      You are asking me questions but you didn't answer my questions, which were and are fair questions absolutely germane to a respectful exchange of views for a conversation like ours. Your further questions here lead me to believe however you are more thinking of our exchange as debate, which I'm not interested in frankly. I've taken your point, which as I said is interesting. Your cup however seems to be already full to the brim as the Zen saying goes, so I'll only wish you a good day.

      @dnag02 Před rokem

      @@teach-learn4078 "I think we can say neither Aurobindo nor Gandhi are at the level of Nityananda of Ganesh Puri" - I think you do not know enough to make that statement. Let me ask you what truth do you think MK Gandhi found and expressed in his book. Gandhi was a shrewd politician who never did any spiritual sadhana but he used to act and talk like he was a saint. The reason I would not read that book is because I like many believe that he is the man singularly responsible for how India experienced a bloody partition and India's many subsequent huge issues. Just so you are aware, Gandhi made attempts twice to meet with Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry after Sri Aurobindo attained yoga siddhi and Sri Aurobindo declined both times to meet with Gandhi. May I know what other books on Indian spirituality did you read other than the book that Gandhi wrote? You mention Nityananda of Ganeshpuri or Lord Buddha but you did not mention the names of the famous ones like Ramana Maharishi, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Paramahansa Yogananda and his lineage of great Gurus, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, Sai Baba, Anandamoyee Maa and many others. You seem to know very little about India's spiritual traditions.
