On a Krupp or Thyssen page there’s a blurb about the formula being the same but the steel being improved due to gradual improvements in manufacturing (presumably reductions in impurities, more consistent mixing, different smelting temperatures, and cool down cycles affecting precipitation). A steel is much more than a formula, and mills matter. I think that is reflected in the general incremental superiority of Spyderco 8Cr. That or some knife makers are swapping in whatever’s available (which can also work to our advantage in those rare cases where a better steel is swapped in when a cheaper one is out of stock).

    • @mdubb4855
      @mdubb4855 Před rokem

Correction. The Krupp website was referring to 4116 on the Cold Steel website they rated 4034 below 4116. 120 cuts with a mirror edge is more than sufficient and a recent JoeX destruction video on the Crawford 1 suggests 4034 is quite tough. I think I would prefer 4116 but the Crawford is designed for one in every door bin.

Fun fact: this steel with the German steel number 1.4034 (its an aisi 420 variant) was really a very versatile steel here in Germany in the last 100 years till now... Even though it has high Chromium amount and lower c amount, with the right heat treat from the right bladesmiths the c amount rose to about 0.8 and the chromium got down to 12 where the steel is getting a good retention AND still very good corrosion resistance... You shouldn't have used it as prybar in the cold though... HRC s of 60 and even 61 HRC (with a deep cooling in the HT-process) were achieved by German bladesmiths...

    Good morning…
Long time watcher and first time commenting.
I have a ton of knives as you know , and I keep most for really just collecting purposes.
But I do use roughly 20 of them off and on .
One of the users is the Cold Steel Crawford.
It was extremely inexpensive; I even gave away in a contest I had here on CZcams ).
Not only do I really like that knife but the guy who won it from me can’t stop thanking me for it .
    Haha
That was like 3 years ago and he still hits me up once in a while thanking me .
That really makes my day .
    ( I don’t ever want to send someone a failure , ya know )??
But yeah - I use the Crawford daily .
Only had to sharpen a few times here and there .
Mostly used as a box opener or just a little bush craft .
    ( nothing major ).
    It’s a fun knife indeed .
Funny - out of my entire collection, I have zero Spyderco .
My one buddy swears by them .
There’s so many to choose from .
    What would you recommend???
Have an awesome week ahead and keep safe as always 🤠

I wish to make a comment!
From the time I started seeing televisions (holy shit, my childhood was TV free) I became aware of something strange. As I grew, this phenomenon intrigued me. In my early teens, I was a thespian and learned of stage direction etc. In my late teens, I worked for a time for a television production company. It was there that I learned that the phenomenon that bugged for so many years was a real thing and to counteract this thing they had red lights on the live cameras. And still the thing that bugged was common on TV.
It's 2020 and we get to record from multiple cameras and can edit said recordings in the comfort of our homes and still...still my now phobic concern manifests. LOOKING AT THE WRONG CAMERA IS NOT ART DAMMIT!
    Yours sincerely,
That wasted guy in the back row heckling.

YES! MORE BUDGET STEEL TESTING! THis is what im hankering for! i especially want to see some 7cr/440a testing! I think that if heat treated propperly it should be AUS-8 level
Not just that! Because of the lower Abrasion resistance the test should be much quicker aswell!

    • @CNYKnifeNerd
      @CNYKnifeNerd Před 4 lety +2

I don't really have much experience with AUS-8, but I have a ton of experience with Gerber's 7cr, and Spyderco's AUS-6 and they're completely indistinguishable (IN MY EXPERIENCE) in every aspect. They sharpen the same, and have the same edge retention and stability. That makes sense, since they're essentially synonymous.
I could see Gerber's 7cr performing similarly to some of the random AUS-8, but probably falling behind if the AUS-8 was done really well. The schrade/old timer 7cr I've tested fell well short of Gerber's 7cr, so I can't imagine that being anywhere near AUS-8.
I agree though, I love the budget steel testing. Im as much of a steel snob as anyone, but I find myself being more and more interested in the subtle (and not so subtle) differences found in budget steels.
It's one thing for a manufacturer to just use a super steel and assume it will provide great performance, and charge accordingly. It's another when a manufacturer can pick from 15-20 different budget steels to hit the price point/performance level they're aiming for.

I suppose most people only consider hardness and abrasion resistance to be the only properties that are important in a knife.
For large knives that are commonly used to chop with , a "tougher" stainless that would resist chipping might be a good alternative.
So you have to re-sharpen more often.
Taylor/Schrade (and others )commonly use 3cr13 for their big blade knives.
    How would 4034 compare to 3cr13 ?

I really liked that knife otherwise, but couldn't justify keeping a knife that had, for me at least, a problematic locking mechanism. So, I want to give Cold Steel another try. That rope is very abrasive. 8cr is fine for an everyday EDC steel. Of coarse, depending on what you do with your knife. But just for an EDC 145 cuts can be who knows ? 6 months of use ? 12 months of use ? Again it all depends what you are cutting and how much you are cutting. 8cr treated correctly Is a fine steel for light edc work. It's just my opinion but most super steels with light cutting should stay sharp forever. If you are only cutting light or soft stuff 8cr should stay sharp for a while as well. When you look at the variance involved having cheaper steels available makes sense. I like 8cr & I like 20cv & I like 1080. It's great watching you do the test and comparisons. It's very interesting. Question, Are there any steels you have not tested ?

I very much enjoyed the FF8 music. Not a terribly good game, but very nice sounding.

Yeah, 4034 is just 420HC with the little bit of vanadium taken out, so the wire burr will be harder to remove and a tiny loss in wear resistance.
As we have seen in other brands, 420HC varies a lot by the quality of the heat treat. 88 isn't bad, but I want better.

Thyssen-Krupp German Steel. Pretty much same as 420HC. But since it's Thyssen-Krupp well it definitely is Good. For its specific uses. And People need to keep that in mind... When they decide to torture test different knives and get mad when it Breaks or gets Dull.

4034ss...very low carbon. Rc is sbout 56/57....I commend you for getting such a good result from that Cold Steel knife. Your sharpening skills are impressive young Jedi.
Maybe Cold Steel will make a combat shovel from that steel....you could dig a trench, hack your way though jungle vines, and kill enemy zombies with it in the zombie apocalypse. Very useful.

How is +40% a "slight performance edge" to the Tenacious?
So Spyderco is 140% of the performance compared to CS.
That's just 10 percentage points shy of half more! Huge difference.

Not to mention people always slam 8cr13mov, but as this test shows it is still, IMO, a capable performer whose edge will last most people all day, or all week, or all month. Bonus points for being easy to sharpen back to a razor edge.

80 is low compared with d2 450 or rex 1200.
but we have to take into consideration the toughness of 4034.
i read in knife steel nerds its more than 6 times more tough than 1095.
for such a low priced steel its AEB-L and 3V toughness tier.
