  • In this video I am going to compare 3 expensive brands of coloured pencil, including the most expensive coloured pencils in the world: Caran D'ache Luminance, against a cheap childrens' brand: Bruyzeel.
    1: Caran D'ache Luminance
    2: Faber Castell Polychromos
    3: Derwent Procolour
    4: Bruynzeel

    Such a helpful video! I currently only use polychromos but really want to get a set of luminance at some point. I am also shocked at how much lower the quality looked with Derwent 😮 you did a smashing job though, amazing drawing!

      Thank you so much! Yeah, at this point I would not recommend the Derwents, though maybe the other Derwent lines (I heard some good things about coloursoft) are better.

    Nice comparison. In defense of Bruynzeel, they have a college level and professional pencils too, Bruynzeel Expression and Bruynzeel Design.

    Hoi Marlies, eindelijk iemand die ook ouderwetse bruynzeel even reviewed :)
    Recently got into drawing with coloured pencils again.
    I own piles of old bruynzeel pencils that I have had since ....... wel childhood and a base 12 set of Carandache Pablo. Which is a significant improvement, but still not quite what i'm looking for to buy as a full set.
    I'm looking around to see what other types I might want to try and what colour sets might be usefull for me. I think it might be usefull to buy luminance in a few base colours for big surfaces (portret/nature colours maybe), for blending/ layering, and Poly chromos for the detail work like you said. Because buying full sets of both seems a bit too much. So I'm looking to have different colours for each brand. So I wont have a lot of colour overlap. My problem with coloured pencils is that their is no Hardness gradient like with graphite, so it's hard for me to judge what to use which brand for without having tried them.
    Bruynzeel also has professional pencils. Have you checked those out before? I'm a bit curious about how they compare. They may be worth trying. In my experience the cheaper Bruynzeel pencils break alot and the wood tends to chip when sharpening, but that could be because I have 25 year old pencils that have been used and abused by me as a child XD.

      Heej, dank je wel voor je reactie!
      I have tried the Bruynzeel professional pencils but that was 20 years ago, I liked them then. I still have some but I guess I should not try them for a test since that's unfair for 20 year old pencils. But I am planning to buy some soon for a test.
      I did ordered a stabilo set of 24 this week (for 13 euro I think) to try somewhere in the next few weeks though.
      Using just a few of the more expensive pencils like the luminances or polychromos works perfectly well though. I have done this for a long time, using cheaper pencils along with a black and white Luminance. In my first video on this channel (the Dutch video) I used Derwent Procolour pencils which I bought with a large discount, I don't really like those, but combined with a white and black Luminance the result wasn't bad at all. So doing that is perfectly fine.
      I don't recognize the problem that the kids bruynzeels are breaking when sharpening though. (I use them sometimes when I'm drawing with my kids), but that might be the age, our Bruynzeels are just a few months old. If pencils have been dropped a lot, for example, the pen in the middle might break underneath the wood, causing them to break when sharpening.
      Anyway, I'll be testing much more pencils in the coming months! So you might find more useful information here in the future :)

    The Bruynzeel expression and design blend amazing, but indeed the kid version kinda sucks with blending. The expression 72 set on the Dutch amazon was available for like 30 euros.
    Also procolir works really well with solvents.

      Really? That's interesting, because that's still not very expensive. Would be interesting to review them too. Thanks for watching! (and a happy new year!)

    Great video and your ladybugs were fantastic. I am a bit biased towards anything Caran Dache as that is my favourite oil pastel brand. Thanks gor the intresting video. 😊👍

    Bruynzeel comes in various lines: "Design" which seems mostly lightfast according to a 1.year south side window test on the internet; the "Expression" is student or craft hobby range and a kids range and even a toddler range with extra thick and short casings.

      Thank you for your comment, it was very useful. I was actually looking to find info about the Design series from Bruynzeel, since I have a small set from my student time and I want to try pencils for the first time.

      Hi, thanks for watching! I used Canson Bristol paper for this drawing 😊

      @cymbalinepx Před 3 lety

      I think procolour pencils work’s better with paper that have a little bit of tooth, bristol is to smooth for them

    • @MarliesDraws
      @MarliesDraws  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you for explaining that! I wasn't aware of that. I might have to make a video to correct for that now 😊 Testing pencils on less smooth paper.

      @cymbalinepx Před 3 lety

      That would be awesome 🤩 I didn’t know that till recently because I bought them and wasn’t happy with the results (and they’re pricey) and also was using bristol paper. Someone on Facebook suggested me a less smother paper and they work beautifully ❤️
