You've made the classic blunder. See, you'd assume Santa only works one day a year. You'd be wrong. He actually 'works' as a manager the rest of the year. What this actually means is that he gets paid to tell his elves what to do. Who pays his salary and the salary of the elves? Nobody knows. I hadn't actually gotten that far when I started typing this. Yes, this is just a joke/social commentary on how little work managers actually do.

'Time in the market is better than timing the market' is bad advice in the long-term depending on investment type. If you just dump money into a pension fund or hedge fund then the fees will eat up a lot of your earnings, that's why advisors that work for these types of businesses use this phrase, it just means they make more money off you the longer you invest with them. If you don't have the time to check and manage your portfolio then use an ETF thats geared for what you like, it's what the pension funds use anyways and this time you don't have to pay fees. If you do have time to check financial indicators, which are widely available, then it's much better to time the market, since the indicators give a pretty reliable forecast of when recessions will hit and markets will tank, as long as you sell before that and you buy during them then you'll beat the market on average. Brokerage fees are a pain, but, you can handle them.

Yes, funds are a bad idea, buying through a brokerage and getting a broad spread of stocks in different industries is the way to go, but advising ordinary people to time the market is a good way to impoverish a lot of people.
Hey he does have good advice on index funds and dollar cost averaging. As an Asian myself I did study to be an engineer, so hopefully Asian Santa will give me that Sega CD I always wanted a few decades late.
