Wow! That's something not to be missed...
Hope you like it my friend!
I surely did! 🙂
There's no way on earth I would be brave enough to tackle that camo scheme! Congratulations man, it looks great!
Thanks Simon ! It was a bit hairy when I started but once I got the flow I got a bit more confident
I'm japanese.Thank you for making a Japanese fighter. very nice.
You're welcome !
You are a very underrated model builder, I love your video on the 1:35 FCM 36.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the FCM !
Probably the most intense, satisfying build I’ve ever seen. Thanks
Thanks Pete !
Absolutely awesome Japanese camouflage work James! The quality of your work and video presentation is amongst the best on CZcams.
That's very kind thanks a lot !
A great representation of the KI-61 James the painted on markings worked very well . Regards Gav.
Incredible airbrush control and technique on the camo, wow!
Thank you for the skills you share, you’re work is inspiring.
You sir, have the patience of a saint! The paint job is excellent. I always look forward to your videos James and this one is one of your best in my opinion. Stay safe!
Thanks Ferbie I really appreciate the kind words ! ( the next build tests my patience in other ways )
Awesome paintwork, especially the markings on the tail. This is one seriously beautiful model!
Thanks Al ! They came out niceb
I'm so glad i watched this to the end. Very well done indeed! Turned out perfectly balanced in weathering
Thanks Darius, it's tricky to get the right amount of weathering but I didnt want to go too crazy and detract from the paint scheme
Very nice work - I can't wait to start building mine as soon as I can clear the bench of my current builds
I hear you Bryan, I only build one at a time these days otherwise I would never get any videos out
Absolute museum piece, amazing job on this build, you certainly know your craft.
Thanks Tony that's very kind !
Excellent video & job building and painting your Tamiya KI-61-ID Hein too!!
Thankyou 😄
Absolutely amazing airbrush skills with the camo!!
Thanks Mark ! It was a bit hairy
When I was a boy we didn't have any 'masks'. It was all done by hand, in candelight with only one brush. lol Great work my friend, really great
😆 thanks Michael!

Thanks Rims !
It was nice to be able to refer to the necessary assembly video.

You are a superb craftsman! Your painting knowledge is outstanding. I have a lot to learn, but thanks to your video I have guidance!
STUNNING! SIMPLY STUNNING! Awsome job. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.

Very nicely done, James. Well constructed and finished, a great example of what patience and discipline will accomplish. I learned something new to me and very useful in this video. Thanks for producing it.
Patrick
Thankyou Patrick,
I'm glad the video was useful, makes it all worthwhile mate !
Looks lovely. The camouflage mottling looks great.
Thanks Basil 😊
Now THAT is a model! Well freakin done!
Thanks mate 😁
That's so good. I like your paint work on every model kit.
Thanks Norman ! I really try to keep the quality up as best as I can
Awesome build James!
Thanks Bill 😊
Brilliantly done,beautifully painted
Thanks Anthony
Thanks for Kernel Teruhiko Kobayashi's Ki-61, your splendid technique to make it very real, from Japan.
Amazing paint job!
Nice work James, well done.
Once again, you showed your excellent freehand airbrushing with the green splotches. Impressive!
Thanks mate !
I think yours and Scaleaton's Hien fighters are the best on CZcams by far. Thanks for such a great build.
Thanks man, Scaleaton did a tremendous job
No doubt about it, the end results are spectacular. Your detailed narrative really sets the standard that all others can be judged by.
That's very kind thankyou!
That's s Beautiful model you have their. Great job James! Wish I could do that kind of work.
Thanks Rick 😊
It looks fantastic. Thanks for the great tips.
That's a nice build and great paint job. I am beginning to have good success with the Flory models water based clay washes. They are very safe and easy to use and you can get very good panel line markings.
Thanks Allan! I have tried the clay washes but still prefer oils myself, I can see the appeal of em though
I came to this video to try to decide if I wanted to try my hand at the Tamiya Ki61. Having watched, now I'm convinced I want to give it a shot.. Superb work.
I really like the look of that dark yellow interior.
Excellent result, James 👏
Thanks mate !
Damn thats some sick modelling! Wow. So many great tips! Thanks!
Thanks Gerald 😊
@@lpjmodels Please, what was the reddish airbrush you were using? It looked portable. Thanks :)
James video just keep getting better and better! If you haven't seen them you are definitely missing some of the best out there.
Eric thats very kind thankyou, appreciate the great feedback !
Nice to look at good work. It is very impressive and motivating.
Cheers my friend!
Magnificent build mate. 👍👍
Fantastic Build!
Thanks Ron 😊
Absolutely stunning!
Cheers Bradley !
Just built this a month or so back. Great kit. Hope you enjoyed it.
It was a great kit CJ, it's been kicking around in the stash for ages luckily it won the vote
@@lpjmodels I had an absolute blast building mine.
Very nice work! The Cockpit is very interesting and different! I like it!
Thankyou ! Yes I like the sand colour in the cockpit, bit different to green and grey
brillant build. thanks
Another beauty James. You handled that camo pattern nicely... that's not an easy thing to do. Cheers!
Thanks Scott, I was slightly apprehensive about spraying it on the metal finish but I'm glad I did 😀
@@lpjmodels Yes it's always a scary moment for sure.
thanks, really useful, I get the reason why professional modelers never uses Tamiya color because when you dip it in detailed part only the oil stick to it instead of the color itself
Stunning!
Great job 👍
Great build mate! Really enjoyed the video!
Thanks mate 😆
Beautiful build mate done this war bird100% justice. Stay safe guys😊😉👍
Thanks Dave mate, hope alls well on your end
Very niece build James
Thanks my freind!
What an absolute banger!!
Cheers mate 👍
Amazing paint job !!! too bad the engines is not showing, that could have been something interesting to see
Thanks mate, the problem was it was over simplified, otherwise I might have
fantastic work mate.. seriously that tail was impressive
Thanks mate 😎
Great job on that camo !!
Thanks mate it was tricky but I think I got there
The Hien looks like the lovechild of a BF-109 & P-51D Mustang. You've done a fantastic job on the paint scheme - it would have driven me insane lol
Thanks James ! It does I totally see it !
If I remember right, the Ki-61 actually did have a Japanese-made version of the Bf-109's engine. I always thought the Ki-100 was the coolest version of the Ki-61. The same body as the 61, with the same engine as the Zero.
@@aaronwhite17862yrs late but yea you’re correct, the ki61 used an HA40 engine which was a licensed copy of the Daimler-Benz DB601
@@okmeneer9583 Better late than never!
Hi James, that build an l paint job, was fantastic, congratulations..
Thanks Les ! Appreciate it
You did an excellent job with the overall NMF and the camo. Congrats! Some inaccuracies, though. By the time Kobayashi flew the Hien with the blue fuselage line, he had more victories painted in white on the cockpit side and the wing cannons were removed. It would have been better to paint the fuselage stripe in red, to depict an earlier aircraft of the pilot with the fewer black victories and the wing cannons. Also, the yellow IFF stripes on the wing were more parallel to the leading edge than tapered as you depict them. I would also have liked to see an aircraft that has seen combat with more exhaust stains and dirt. Other than that, really great overall job.
Another great job!
Thanks mate !
Well done, Sir!
Thanks !
Stellar job!!
Thankyou very much Jason
Fantastic job 👍💪
Thanks 😊
Cheers James. My next build, I cheated and got the silver sprue version with the camoflauge decals though. I'm praying they're ok. lol
Looks great.
Thanks my freind!
looks amazeballs!
Thanks mate 🤠
Excellent work, one of the best, and most accurate, builds of this popular kit that I've seen!
You avoided the common mistakes of red fuselage stripes and leading edges and yellow droptanks and got pretty much all the colours correct (the B-29 kill markings were blue, not black). You also correctly sprayed the camouflage after applying the stripes. You even caught the triple aerial and spline light, both unique to the 244th Sentai.
There are two details you missed, as did just about anyone else who built this kit: this aircraft (c/n 4424) had been camouflaged previously in 1944 and during the winter of '44/'45 this camouflage was stripped. With the stripping all the top surface stencils were lost and not repainted. This aircraft should therefore have (almost) no stencils or only vague traces of them. On the other hand, since the ailerons were fabric-covered, these weren't stripped and retained their 1944 camouflage during the rest of their existence. In March 1945 the airframe was re-camouflaged, pretty much as you have it (great job!), with the ailerons looking extra dark from their previous camouflage coat.
I'm very much enjoying your builds. Highly inspiring and educational. Great stuff, keep up the good work!
Wow thats a wealth of knowledge thankyou ! I did anlot of research into the drop tanks as that's where I found a lot of mixed opinions, you must have done a tonne of research on the subject, hats off !
Thanks! I illustrated Osprey's book by Nicholas Millman about Ki-61 & Ki-100 Aces. The four Kobayashi profiles took a week of full-time research (plus months of general research and knowledge gathering on the Ki-61, not to mention Nick's input based on four decades of reseach!).
Oh blimey ! That's pretty awesome thanks for sharing your expertise!
Really nice work as always.
Thanks Darren 😊
Masterfully built! 😬👍
Thanks B.P !
i'm ready for it!
Hope you enjoyed it mate
Spekling on undersurfaces and absolutely clean wheels - how can it be? In all other aspects your model is great! Love your channel and content.
Beautiful...
Thanks Marcel
very nice Mr. Cann
Thanks !
Well done..
Thankyou !
Nice work mate cheers ✌
great video again 👍🏻
Many thanks mate !
You are a classy modeler.
Thanks William !
Wow .... just Wow ....
Beautiful work! I just think the exhaust soot was missing.
Beautiful job and finish on a very sleek fighter! Loved watching this....again I learned more techniques! Ever thought of doing a 1/16th figure? Hint hint.....😉
Thanks Andy , what sort of 1/16 figure? I need to get through some of the stash first though
@@lpjmodels maybe one of the Tamiya or Dragon WW2 figures? Or a bust...plenty to choose from so plenty of options from ancients to SF! How big is your stash? And what do you have planned next?
*I love this japanese Me 109, what a beautiful model!*
Thanks mate 👍
Very nice!!!! 👍👍👍
Cheers man !
Great build, but i regreted the engine hide !
Nooo! I missed it, again. We ordered pizza and it arrived early. I shall watch now.
I don't blame you, pizza is my fave !
@@lpjmodels Right watched in glorious 4k 'ont telly. Fantastic effort again James. It's so nice to see you push you self a bit further in each build. Thanks for an entertaining 30 minutes.
Thanks for watching mate !
Very nice work James.
Nice work. One thing i would like to see is a total build time at the end. It seems to take me forever to get the painting done and I'm curious how long it takes you.
Thanks !
This was built in about 1.5 weeks, the construction and cockpit took the longest and the paint finish was about 3-4 days
Mate, great video! Can I ask what music you use in the background?
Beautyfull Swallow My Friend :) great movie and Kawasaki
Thanks a lot !
Awesome as ever. Really liked the aluminium variations. How long did the camo take?
Thanks Sera, about an hour for the camo !
Fantastico
Amazing, as usual. Two quick questions. How far did you thin the camo paint down? I have trouble attaining a balance when painting onto metal colors. My second question is in relation to the wash. Whenever I apply a wash of any kind without a clear coat, any non-metal paint absorbs some of it. What magic are you doing to prevent the green paint from getting stained when you did you wash? Thanks!
Thanks mate sorry for the slow reply.
My thinning is 70 thinner 30 paint, 10 ish psi very close.
I think thinning with Mr levelling thinner helps with the staining as it smooths the paint slightly giving the wash less to grip to, and over an ultra smooth metal finish this helps even more.
Use hair lacker next time or add more thinners to the paint. when you do your chipping.
Thanks Paul I dont have much luck with actual hairspray but this mig chipping fluid is new to me. The ak one is a bit better I think
Wow!!!!🖤🖤
Thanks Michele 🍻
For your chipping effects. I think the paint you're using may be too durable for the chipping fluid to work easily. Too much water or too much chipping fluid will make the process uncontrollable. Try using a non lacquer top coat. Great job though.
Thanks Jon, I have had success with laquer before I think the scratches effects I'm using is the wrong fluid for what I want to do. I used AK worn effects before and that worked a lot better.
Hello! Amazing work. Sorry , in minute 17:57 What do you use to mask the insignia? thank you for the video.
Hi thankyou, hinomaru masks are from montex masks
@@lpjmodels thank you!!!
👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👏👏👏💪💪💪Very cool!!!
Cheers enki!
