If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

“London has two seasons: cold and wet, and somewhat hot” - the truest and most accurate description of British weather i’ve ever heard
And the rest of the nation just has wet and occasionally less wet
Very true 😂
I'd take a british winter over canada anyday XD
Emily Finch nah I’d say cold, wet and somewhat hot also describes Gloucestershire.
Florida: Hot and wet
I was in London once with an American friend. We were about to get on a tube train and I said to him, hurry up and get your seat. A very tall Englishman corrected me by saying it's not YOUR seat it's A seat. I will never forget that.
@Beta Squad Clips I disagree
@Beta Squad Clips yeah cant argue with that man.. its a city for the rich no doubt. not far away in kent rn
He needs to mind his business.
They are snobs I don't like them
That man is very bored .... and mind others business....
Londoners HATEE socialising in public transport services, in the North, you leave the bus with a new family 😂
are there as many jobs in the north?
Yes
But you can't understand anyone in the North. So it doesn't make any difference...

Best thing about London - Free museums!!!!!! And plenty of them to keep revisiting especially the V&A, Natural History, Science Museum and National Gallery
Yeah they’re great!
Free museums are all over the Uk, most museums are free and don’t need any payments
Paid for by the tax payer i believe
That's amazing!
The city itself seems like an outdoor museum.
As a Londoner who's lived in the city longer than you've been alive, I have to say that this was an exceptionally fair critique. Well done that man.

It depends entirely on the context. If I’m stood at a bar or relaxing on a park bench then I’m happy to chat. If I’m on a busy train on the way to work, I don’t like it.
I'm just an average Brit, but I also hate people randomly coming up to me and starting a convo. It's like, I'm here to do something, not make a new friend so fuck off.
I'm introverted and I personally found the whole not talkative part of London really great when I was there. In the US everyone wants to make small talk and I hate it. I really appreciated Londoners leaving me alone lol

Shops/Stores in London vary a lot with opening times. Some of the major stores open till 9pm weekdays others more like 8pm. This is a huge improvement on years ago when most closed at 6. Supermarkets usually open until at least 10 pm.

I lived in London in 93/94. What an adventure! I was attending university and was in my late thirties. I rented in a room in a family house. It was such a wonderful city to explore and experience so many cultural events. Lots of them for free! Enjoyed your video. The transport system was so great. I had a student pass. As you said, most museums were free, I sang in two choirs so had opportunity to sing at some neat venues. It was a life changing time!
Very interesting story. What did you study? My sister is in her late 30s but feel off about enrolling back in uni.

I’m from Liverpool and you can’t stand in a queue down here without someone starting a conversation with you 😂 it’s crazy for me how people are so different in London.
Charlotte Harrison Scousers 👍👍👍👍
Charlotte Harrison Being a born and bred Londoner myself, Liverpool and Newcastle are my favourite cities (outside of London). Considering that I was only in Liverpool for a week, it took a bit of getting used to having conversations with strangers on what felt like a regular basis, but it was fun considering that I went up alone for a short break away from the city. Made some friends who I plan to visit again this year 🙂
The whole “Londoners not being friendly” is true to an extent, it’s mostly that everyone is trying to get to work and it doesn’t really give much room to converse with people unless it’s a Friday night 😅
I honestly just think it's a Northern thing. 🙌😂
I've been to Liverpool once and 3 people stopped and had conversations with me on the way to the lift in the hotel.. it really freaked me out lll
Last time I arrived in Liverpool it took me 5 seconds getting out the taxi before a guy tried to sell me coke. Such great service.
I know this isn’t related, but I love watching videos that were made right before the pandemic. The hope is so evident
When you said “a foot of snow” I heard a bit of a British accent there. 😂 Your definitely becoming a Londoner.

I lived in London for 20 years (first Islington and then Hackney) and loved it, moved there at 21 and brought up two kids...I was a 'goth' and having access to the Electric Ballroom, Camden Palace, Heaven and all the indie fashion shops was fabulous...however, I do believe that London is better for the young.... now I'm sixty and visiting is fine but I couldn't live there anymore..I now live in a small village where I know my neighbours and there is a far beter sense of community spirit...I wouldn't change those 20 years though, I have many happy memories of being a 'Londoner'. :)

As someone who's lived in several places around the UK, London feels like another country! I love London, but I feel as if I should have to have my passport checked on the train in! I live in Bradford, but London makes me feel like a country bumpkin! People are always nice when I have to ask a question (like do I need to tag my debit card getting off the bus as well as on?) as long as I'm super polite.
Also, why do you want food at 3am?! As long as I can get a few groceries on my way home from work I'm happy!

I grew up in the South East in a London commuter town and I can say that the whole 'Londoners aren't warm' thing is totally true and in fact in my experience it tends to apply to the London-sprawl commuter towns as well. Thank u for posting the video. This might be very helpful to a lot of people who wants to come to live, work or just visit!
As a visitor to London from time to time from Canada I agree with what you’ve said... I’ve experienced a lot of these exact pros and cons. As someone from a small city I was surprised that things closed so early... I was also surprised by how safe I felt. I’ve traveled to many large cities in the world and I feel most at home, and safe in London.
Like a lot of things, when things close depend of what part of London you are in. For example, Richmond everywhere closes annoyingly early.
Whereas Brixton, most things seem to be open indefinitely. Or at least the laws are far more relaxed.

@@evan aw thanks for replying. Made my day ;)
More than five years here and I can't describe the city better than this, thank you, and keep going on.
You mentioned snow. I just wanna point out that there's less snow in London now than there used to be back when I used to live there. I've been in contact with people from all over the world and apparently, Europe and the world as a whole has been particularly hot this winter. I was talking with a Finnish guy a few days and he said that this winter has been very hot for their standards so there's almost no snow. I've heard that in Ontario they also haven't been getting much snow. A few days, I also found out that Antarctica recently broke a record for the hottest temperature ever recorded there at around 20°C. I'm currently a high school student and I'm deeply in love with geography. For this reason I have been searching up temperatures all around the world for the past few months and while you might be complaining about not having as much snow as you did in New Jersey, New Jersey has barely been snow this winter as well. As far as I'm aware London hasn't gotten any snow/sleet this winter either. I am no scientist but my hypothesis is that the Australia wildfires have something to do with this. I just need to do a little more research. I still don't understand how people can deny climate change. Anyway, I hope you're enjoying my hometown :)
Bless ya. I hope you do become a scientist in the future and do what you love.
Check out London temperature range since records began

Literally outside of London (and the major cities) most things close at 5pm no lie.
Hate to break it to you but there are gangs , druggies etc outside of London
@RoadKillzine i don't know where you are, but outside of london, and probably other major cities most most town centres just close up shop at 5/6 pm, with the exception of the odd fast food chain and yeah, the 24 hour tescoes. Also I lived in basildon for a good portion of ny life and let me tell you the crime rate there can rival london's haha 🤣
Nah they Don't. I live in Weston-Super-Mare and 9-10pm is the norm.
RoadKillzine woke??? Bit embarrassing misuse of the term. Your point is moot, solely for this.
RoadKillzine ah... alas you’re racist and a xenophobe. No point in engaging.
I think London is a city of many cities. I've kind of experienced different sides. When I moved to London from the north of England I lived the typical 20 something life in London, making new friends, living in a house share etc... Since then I met my born and bred London boyfriend. Now I live in London and have a local family to hang around, all of them being true Londoners. I think that makes London feel much more homely than it did when you're hanging around other 20 somethings all the time.
its now cheaper to live in London than it is to live in Chicago

I lived in London for about a year last year as part of an exchange program I did with my university in the US. It was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life, I had a bit of trouble with an employer not wanting to pay me my last paycheck which was a whole thing but besides that it was wonderful! I lived in Camden and I actually found there to be a few bigger grocery stores there as well as the usual corner shops. We had a full-sized Waitrose and Tesco's if I remember correctly! But those were the only big stores I saw in central London. But I'm so excited to get the chance to go back for my Master's next year, I'll be living in New Cross.

I lived in London for a while. And I really liked that people didn’t talk to you on the tube. As a Scandinavian it just resonated with me.
i wish manchester had a tube :( trains are so expensive and always delayed and the buses take double the time it takes to drive
and a free bus for the city centre
Sara J yeaaah true
I've recently decided that I want to move to London after I graduate university. I'm not expecting it to be all smooth sailing but I'm really looking forward to it!
Would advise you to understand the new legislations and restrictions post Brexit (January 1st 2021) for non British citizens.
Donno your nationality, but new restrictions will come into place for Europeans and people from the rest of the world in regards to employment and living costs; taxes, council fees etc.
Employment is essential of course to live in London.
You are likely to be renting a room as appose to a whole flat.
Find out about the demographics that make up the different areas in London.
@@fredgalaxy7632 good advise
You will love it. You can be who you want to be in London.
For someone thinking of applying to a few London universities and coming from up north, this was super helpful :)
You are really spot on about the weather, after the end of summer time it turns very dark, grey and the sun is so low that any odd blue sky day it's unlikely you'll see the sun as it will be hidden behind a building. 7 dark months, you gotta keep yourself busy and see it through. Then you get rewarded with a lovely spring/summer which isn't too hot and really enjoyably with the endless parks, green areas, pub gardens etc etc, looking forward to the end of winter
In Sweden a glas of wine can often cost more than £10. THAT should be illegal.
Oh yeah Stockholm is pricey!!
Ronylea
£10 for a just a glass?
I Waldron
That’s how to hike up tourist revenue
@@isaacw9091 no, wages are not that high here really. they increase the cost of living all the time but wages don't increase at the same time sadly....
Annika it’s soo expensive now I literally have to save all week to go out with friends for a night
You’re such an inspiration, I want to live in London so bad 😢
Lol you really don't , I live in London and it's so trampy
Hi Evan, that was really good! London is amazing! It’s probably the best city in the world & that’s why it’s so expensive! I’m one of those friendly Manchester people who’s now a rude Londoner!
Hi Evan,
I really like your content. All the best mate😊
"When a man is tired of ankle-deep slurry, he is tired of Ankh-Morpork"
“Ankh-Morpork! Pearl of cities! This is not a completely accurate description, of course - it was not round and shiny - but even its worst enemies would agree that if you had to liken Ankh-Morpork to anything, then it might as well be a piece of rubbish covered with the diseased secretions of a dying mollusc.”
"Poets have tried to describe Ankh-Morpork. They have failed. Perhaps it's the sheer zestful vitality of the place, or maybe it's just that a city with a million inhabitants and no sewers is rather robust for poets, who prefer daffodils and no wonder."
So let's just say that Ankh-Morpork is as full of life as an old cheese on a hot day, as loud as a curse in a cathedral, as bright as an oil slick, as colourful as a bruise and as full of activity, industry, bustle and sheer exuberant busyness as a dead dog on a termite mound.”
Hey Evan, thanks for mentioning the B word, yes London is its own bubble! As a guy from just north of Edinburgh, it annoys me when non brits come to these 4 beautiful countries, only see london and think theyve seen the UK. For example, you mentioned prices, yes everything is dearer in london - thank goodness for Wotherspoons for cheap meas and drinks, but culture too - not every city in the uk has a theatre scene as strong as london, or as many museums as london. i could go on and on but like any city ther is pros and cons and i apprciate your honesty on this, im just saying that london really is a world of its own when compared to the rest of UK and i apprciate you mentioned it
RealJustinCrow four nations, not countries
your mom no. A nation has people who have similar origins and customs. The four countries of the UK do not. A better example of nation in the UK would be the Travelers.
Yes,I hate it when somebody makes a what not to do in the UK or England and I am like you mean London
While Edinburgh is certainly cheaper than London, it´s not exactly that cheap either
Thanks for the summary :) My top tip for travel is that you can add an under 30 railcard to your oyster card for a discount on offpeak tube. Mine is about to run out.. so sad. On the topic of travel, I love how close London is to the coast and it feels like such a breath of fresh air (literally).
"Don't pay a dime,"
This is Britain... we would never pay a dime.
That would be about 10 pound 30
Something I only learned quite recently is that London is a lot bigger than New York. I'm so used to everything in USA being huge I just automatically assumed it would be bigger than London. The thing about all the airports around London is great for Londoners, not so great for people elsewhere in UK. I used to live in northern Scotland and the direct flights from Scottish airports are very limited. I would typically have to travel 600 miles to one of those London airports to go anywhere.
Dude I love London, wanna love in London so thanks for this video :)
Good for you for putting up with the cons!
I lived there 4 wonderful years- great times!
But am happy to have my big house in the usa and more $$.
This is a good video
I move to London from Scotland in less than a week, so I've been watching a few of these videos to prepare myself. I knew almost all the cons, but I enjoyed the Pros and its made me even more excited about my decision to leave for London!
One thing I like about London is the hustle culture where people are ardent enough to work hard for what they want but play hard too, from other CZcamsrs I've heard the hustle culture in NY and LA is very much mostly work
Wow as an American in London now for going on five years this is so accurate!! So happy to have discovered your channel. Wish there was a sort of meet-up thing for Americans in London who have chosen to make the UK their permanent home
bobby myers I studied law at one of the universities in London then stayed on after getting a job here :) Honestly Love it, have never looked back
I agree with you about your experiences because I'm from London and I have been through some of this stuff
bill bryson as someone who has lived in england and america has a lot of interesting perspectives, including that england has very little weather compared to anywhere. it's just next to nothing, compared to his growing up in iowa where summers are terribly hot, and winters bring blizzards.
The glow-up this man had is crazy
YEEES becoming British ! Can't wait to apply as well! 3 more years to goooo
Thanks for the post! As a Chinese living in London, I usually can't find the right phrases to tell oversea friends about London. This is a nice one I can steal words from.
I live in London and I couldn't agree more with what you've said.
