Hard Wax Not Removing Hair?

  • One of the biggest questions Estheticians have is “Why Is My Wax Not Removing Hair?” Well, it could be a plethora of reasons. So, let’s break it down and find the reason or reasons! For additional info, check out our blog: hkwax.com/wax-not-removing-hair
    1. The Wax
    First of all, make sure you are purchasing a high quality hard wax (I ONLY recommend Mermaid Wax, but if you don't take my advice, just don't buy in a store -high quality hard wax is not available in stores). Hard wax without a lot of alcohol in it is best since this will ensure it doesn’t break upon removal. A premium hard wax will also stay elastic and tacky even after it is applied. Waxes from places like Walmart or Amazon are going to be very low in quality. You get what you pay for adage definitely applies to wax. Before you buy in bulk, we recommend purchasing a sample to test it out!
    2. Skin Prep
    Prepping the area in the right way will drastically change the way the wax adheres to the hair! Clean, clean, CLEAN! It is important to remove all make up, dirt, sweat, oil or lotion from the skin before applying the wax. After cleansing the skin, if needed, apply a thin layer of pre wax oil (we use sesame seed oil). Depending on the area, we will then use a little bit of baby powder to soak up any excess oil or sweat. Works like a charm!
    3. Exfoliate!
    We cannot stress how important exfoliating between waxing appointments is. After waxing, the hair gets softer, finer and thinner. This means it is harder for the hair to push through the skin which is why exfoliating is so important. Exfoliating will get rid of the layer of dead skin on the surface so the hair can easily push through the skin. If you don’t exfoliate, the hair can get trapped and will cause an ingrown hair. We recommend exfoliating once or twice a week (especially for our brazilian waxing and leg waxing clients) depending on the client’s hair.
    4. Applying Wax
    Using enough pressure when applying a wax strip is crucial to make sure the wax is getting as close to the root of the hair as possible. If you don’t use the proper pressure, the wax will cause the hair to snap instead of gripping the hair from the follicle. So push down and even, we promise you won’t hurt the client! The first wax strips should be applied in the direction of the hair growth. These strips will get rid of the bulk of the hair -about 90% of the initial amount will be removed. We will then apply “clean up strips” which are applied in the opposite direction of the hair growth. This will get rid of the rest of the hair -you know, those stubborn little guys!
    5. Hair Length
    No, not from Oaktown, too short as in length! The hair needs to be about the size of a grain of rice in order to be waxed. Depending on the customer, this means roughly 3-6 weeks of hair growth. If the hair is too short, the wax cannot suction cup the hair which will result in the hair breaking at the surface. Anything longer than that will make it harder for the wax to reach the skin and can cause more discomfort.
    6. Practice Makes Perfect
    Every hard wax performs differently. It’s important to practice with the hard wax that you are using so you can understand how long it takes to cool. Leaving the wax strip on for too long will cause the wax to break so the hair cannot be pulled from the root. We like to use a hard wax that can be left on after applying multiple strips so we can be more efficient with our time -elasticity is key. However, a variety of factors not related to wax can affect your timing AND these factors can vary throughout the day! Client’s skin temperature, air circulation, room temperature, and humidity level all come into play. Everything from the time of year or whether the hvac system is running can play a role. What exactly is the correct amount of time? The answer to this will just take practice and getting a “feel” for the hard wax you are using. Practice makes perfect!

    I have been at home waxing my legs and underarms with hard wax for about 4 months now, and I always had a hard time with a bunch of pieces of wax left behind. I was convinced that I was doing something wrong, and after I found your channel I have learned so much. I am binge watching all of your videos because they are all so helpful. Amazing channel!

    Hair comes back thinner? I've heard this before. My hair's very dark, with thick hairs. It's very painful to wax, bleeds sometimes, & grows back the same thickness - even after multiple waxings. I gave up on hairless legs long ago (although I lurv legs without hair). I have sensitive skin. NOTE: all my hair removal has been nonprofessional at home. Nair is too expensive - besides being a nasty, burning chemical. Shaving - it takes FOREVER to shave my legs as I have to go slowly so I don't nick the F out of myself, & the razor gets clogged every 1 - 2 inches - & the hair starts growing back within 2-3 days. Waxing is just too painful. The only thing that has worked for me is electrolysis - & that takes forever, as well. So, I resigned myself to hairy everything long ago.

    So lately I noticed that the wax is staying soft and not hardening at the borders and when I try lifting it’s all sticky and ends up getting stuck creating a mess. Could this be the temperature in my room , the wax temperature or the skin might have been sweaty? I used the starpil pre lotion but it just was all sticky.i did try it on my arm to check but it was still a little sticky but better then the persons I was doing it on which was my boyfriend

I tried baby powder and taut my skin but it doesn’t work much better. From my observation I saw as soon as the wax started cool down, it came off my skin! Why is that? Thank you!

    I used to get that on my legs where the hair was under a thin layer of dead skin. It was super frustrating to wax and see that afterwards. My solution? Scrub gloves! You can buy them in bulk and sell them to your clients for around $5 a pair. The best part is that they are long lasting, machine washable and you use them in the shower daily with your regular body wash. These gloves do an amazing job at sloughing off dead skin and leave your body super smooth. The best part is your clients will see a real decrease in ingrown hairs.
    I wanted to share a tip with you and I know I left a comment on an older video of yours earlier today but I wanted to leave this here in greater detail. Ok, I am a huge Starpil fan, this is the only brand of way I use. I know you switched recently to Starpil and I see you too never looked back! I was a Cerepil user before Starpil. So, my wax that I mix and use and LOVE! Is the blue polymer beads mixed with the Starpil Starsoft blocks, for a full 5Lb batch I would mix about 6-7 blocks of Starsoft into my pot. Why? Ok, I love the elasticity and stretch of the Starsoft wax combined with the strength and quick dry down time of the blue makes for a killer combo!! I think it’s better then the EWC wax and I know that’s saying a lot but I think you would benefit so much from using this mix. I watched all your videos and I notice the strips seem to break at times keep you from laying more strips then you do. I know your a speed waxed and laying a lot of strips down is so easy with this combo, every strip comes off with ease and will still stretch when pulled. I also mix the Starsoft in with my pink polymer wax beads but for a 5Lb batch of pink mix I use about 5 blocks of the Starsoft. I also always have a pot of the Starpil Starsoft on its own. Why so many different waxes? They all have there own properties and I use each one for different reasons. The blue mix is my all purpose wax and I do use this the most. I use this for the lower legs, backs, arms and back strips of a Brazilian. I use the clear Starsoft exclusively for all my cleanup work as well as for the face, nostrils, female stomachs, upper leg, front of Brazilians, anyone with sensitive skin and any first time client who is new to waxing. The pink mix I love to use on armpits, stubborn lower legs,toes, fingers, return Brazilians where there is a mix of short dark hairs and long fine hairs, and also I like this wax for brows and necklines. I find it’s hard to efficiently wax every single body part at every stage using just one wax. I would love love love for you to make a video of you giving my mix a go!! I know you will love it because it’s such an amazing wax to use and work with. If you chose to try a small batch of the mix I would use one block of the Starsoft and then fill with the blue beads and let that heat through mixing along the way to get a nice even melt. The wax will also melt faster due to the lower melting point of the Starsoft, so that’s another plus to using the mix vs just the blue. Now that I used the mix for so long the blue just seems super hard to work with and BEFORE I tried this mix I thought ( like you) the blue Starpil was a dream to work with!! So if I’m telling you that now I find the straight blue to be hard to work with by comparison... try the mix and please make a video whether it’s a side by side blue and the blue mix or just a short trial of the blue mix on its own. I would love to get your opinion and your feedback!! Can’t wait to see how you feel about the mix!!

      Hi! Would the first mix that you suggested work for both thin and thick hair? The wax that came with my kit only broke the hair on my legs, and I don't know which brand of wax to buy.

    • @cristalcore82
      @cristalcore82 Před 5 lety +1

      Berenice Fernandez YES!! This is why I started using this mix because the blue Starpil beads on its own wasn’t giving me what I wanted in a wax. I was having to use thicker strips and doing less strips to combat the fast dry down of the wax. The Starpil Starsoft is an amazing addition to the blue wax and it’s a dream for corse hairs like on a Brazilian or for legs.

    • @cristalcore82
      @cristalcore82 Před 5 lety +2

      Berenice Fernandez so happy to help!! One other thing I should let you know is the Starsoft has a lower melting point so temp is very important! Make sure the texture of the wax isn’t runny or you will be working with wax that is too hot and can burn you!! The wax I know if it’s right is the way I am able to build up my stick with the wax. I also think this takes some practice! Make sure your room that your waxing in is on the cooler side and always stir your wax to insure consistency and temp control!!

I then did some research online and found your videos so I bought the starpil warmer and purple wax and a 5lb bucket of blue elastic hard wax from their site. I showered last night and woke up this morning, put the prep gel on my leg. I have now been trying to wax my thigh for an hour and every time I pull it off I'm left with about 30-40% hair on my thigh, alot of those hairs look broken. so I am not sure what to do... I have been getting waxed at TWC for over two years now, and have never shaved, however. The hair is still growing back very coarse, and every single time I get waxed, there is always hair left behind where it is obviously broken. How do I prevent the hair from breaking? I am exfoliating and moisturizing, I feel like giving up because it just is not removing the hair and I’m having to go home and wax over it just to feel smooth.

      I recommend going to a different company, someone who owns their own salon. Those smaller companies treat their customers so much better and do a great job! It sounds like it's the waxer that isn't doing her job correctly.

      You just want to make sure the hair is being pulled from the root. Push hard when applying the wax. If it's only 1 or 2 hairs, then I usually just tweeze those!

      Aw! Unfortunately I decided not to due a brazilian/bikini wax tutorial. This is purely because there are WAY too many creeps out there. Maybe I can figure out a way to show you guys without actually using a person...maybe I can dry it out? I'll try to figure something out! And whoever told you they only need 7 pulls for a brazilian is crazy. Every customer is different. You can do 7 pulls to get the bulk of the hair, but then there are clean up strips that need to be applied if you want to ensure you are getting all of the hair. Glad I can help!!

    Some of the hair on my legs tends to grow back slower than the rest. For instance, my hair is at a pretty good length to go ahead and wax but I can see that there are very short hairs that are just breaking the surface. Should I shave the shorter hair or let it grow and wax it again? My only problem is is if I wait for it to grow it seems like my legs are NEVER actually smooth and by then my hair is starting to grow back again. 😩 Any tips?

    Random question, if the skin needs to be prepped before waxing to remove makeup, oil, and dirt, why is oil also applied to protect the skin? Why does the oil not prevent the wax from removing the hair?

    • @hissnkittenwaxing
      @hissnkittenwaxing  Před 6 lety +7

      You only want a very small amount of oil, otherwise the wax won't adhere to the hair. You want to remove any dirt, sweat, make up, etc but also want to ensure the skin isn't too dry which causes it to lift.

    DOes wax ever go bad? I hadn't had problems stripping back the wax until recently. The past few times I've tried when I pull the strip back the wax stays on me and not the strip. I have to stick it back on and more or less have to pinch and rip the wax off my skin. I thought it was the strips at first or that maybe it wasn't hot enough but its doing the same with the new strips I got and the wax is definitely melted and ready to go.... Why might it suddenly not be working anymore?
